PokerStars, €0.92 + €0.08 - Hold'em No Limit - 75/150 - 7 players
Replay this hand on Upswing Poker

UTG: 2,440 (16 bb)
MP: 145 (1 bb)
MP+1: 1,970 (13 bb) 50/3 over 35 hands
CO: 2,310 (15 bb)
BU (Hero): 2,710 (18 bb)
SB: 2,120 (14 bb)
BB: 1,805 (12 bb) 36/7 over 78 hands

Pre-Flop: (225) Hero is BTN with Q T
2 players fold, MP+1 calls 150, 1 fold, Hero calls 150, 1 fold, BB checks

I think against a guy with a VPIP of 50 we can shove here profitably. The problem I see here is that he will also call with a bunch of Ax, broadway and small PP's decreasing our fold equity. I don't often overlimp with these stack sizes but in this case I believe playing IP versus a fish might be more profitable and has less variance than shoving. I usually play fold/shove in these spots, but try to incorporate more limps in these kinda spots. Does that make sense?

Flop: (525) 3 K T (3 players)
BB checks, MP+1 checks, Hero bets 263, BB calls 263, MP+1 calls 263

I will often check here but I think I might be missing out on some value doing so - that's why I bet after the action checks to me. 1/2 pot might be too big though and I should prolly lean towards a smaller sizing on the flop (150-200).

Turn: (1,314) 9 (3 players)
BB checks, MP+1 bets 1,557 (all-in), BU (Hero) folds, BB folds

Thanks in advance for your replies :f_thumbsup:

I don't expect he will limp/call to often based on his passive play for his tournament life. If he has a decent hand he would most likely raise or shove. That makes it easier for me to shove.

As played you can't do much else what you did post-flop.

Would tend to go for 2.5-3bb iso raise pre and fold to shove preflop. On flop just check. It's somewhat tough to get that many weaker hands to call and you don't need much protection. If betting smaller size would be better indeed.

Have to fold turn.

I partly disagree. With these loose-passive guys they often only raise their absolute premium hands and limp many really good hands (AQo or TT) and if they face a shove they are like "Ah screw it" and call you of with A7. Shove is probably profitable and I would do it often, but am wondering if there is a better approach. Thanks for your insight!

How would your pre-flop strategy overall look here with these stacks sizes and a limp? Do you still have a limping range (T9s)? Do you still jam middle PP's? Or do you iso-raise here with all/most of your range to play IP vs the fish?
Thanks in advance - I know this is a rather complex/wide question!

Yeah small to middle pockets I would shove. Also some mediocre hands that are too good to raise-fold but too weak to raise-call. Like QTs or good amount of weaker Axs.

QTo would be bottom of my range in general and perhaps if limping it would often be one of those 98s, TJo type. Problem in limping though is that it's always going to be weak range as default. E.g. limping as trap is tricky without very aggro reads on blinds because you easily get into 3-4 way limped pot and that is bad for premium hand.

Then again if blinds can assume that hero is limp-folding almost always and open limper limps lot of stuff... Well shoving 12-14bb to win 3.5bb will start to look pretty enticing. This is my main issue in limping. If I raise small players left to act won't usually assume much fe for shove which means shove ranges are likely quite tight and we can have some raise-fold hands.
