Anyway, point here is how to play middle sets when villain has a lot of top sets in his range. Like here or e.g when you open Bu and sb 3bets and flop is k89$rb and he leads into you. Or you open and Mp/Co cold calls.
on one hand many players overvalue top pair, middle/bottom twos, and sometimes they just punt randomly. Should I just stack off at brick turns?. I feel like am missing a lot of value by assuming players are playing reasonably and seeing monsters under the bed ♦
I know there are many variables/ considerations. I consider to just raise any middle set with at least 1bdfd on rainbow flops.
This is 3bet pot, and 3bettor checks the flop instead of cbetting. What would you think BB's bet range is here?
A lot of high pair hands like tt-kk and rundowns (I block the 9). thought it was a good idea to check the flop because the game was deeper than 100bb and multiway.
What is SPR on flop? Its somewhat different scenario on flop if there was like minraise and we pot (I assume hero is only potting) 3bet or that open raise is pot.
SPR around 4.
Everything pre is standard pot.
But my question is more general about what to do with middle set if villain has many top sets in his range.
BB cold call range should not theory wise have that many QQ. Of course people tend to cold call 3bets way too wide though.
Anyway when SPR is low like it usually is on 3bet pots stack off threshold decreases quite a bit. So BB bet range can have lot of stuff as weak as some pair plus nut gs type stuff. So like AKQx, AQJx, AKKx. Then obviously stronger straight draws, two pairs and sets.
So basically I would be pretty happy to x-shove in this spot. Flop check is fine as hand playability is not that great for kinda high SPR being oop versus two.
As played on turn it's bad turn card but we do block straight and SPR is around 1. So if BU fold I would still stack off. There are definitely some KJ possible and BB might still be value betting some QT.
But yeah it's always about SPR and ranges in play. With high SPR we don't necessarily want to stack off dry non top sets that eagerly.
When you say "opponent has a lot of top sets in his range" what does that mean? Depending on his cold calling preflop range (which he shouldn't really have), he has QQ 3%-7% of his range preflop. On the flop if he bets QQ, 44, QT and wraps, he has QQ 10-25% of times, depending on his preflop range. Even if he has 25% or 30% of times QQ, it still means that 70-75% of times he doesn't.
In general the range what should, could or would cold call 3bets shouldn't have pocket pairs. So to have QQ, if he is thinking player, he needs to have connected ds version of it. If he calls wide, he starts to have more 44 sets in his range too.
Anyway, my default is to stack off with any set on 3bet pots when SPR is low. Like here.

∼25% is a lot. Also vs a range of: Wraps,QQ,RROO:44 and QT I'm flipping, at best ∼55%.
Yeah that's most likely the correct play.
Well, 75% of his range is not top set. Or 90%, depending on his preflop range. Which is hard to define as no one should have cold calling 3bet range. And if he is thinking player, he shouldn't have that many pocket pairs. Either double pair or premium QQ.
Reason why I wanted to bring numbers is that we all might have different idea how much "a lot of" is. Someone might think that it means over 50% of his range is QQ. Thats why it's good to check the numbers. We could also say that he has a lot of QT in his range, or he has a lot of wraps in his range.
As soon I posed this question I realized it's a bit silly. At spr4 even 5/6 ofc I'm stacking off with a set. later on in the game the same player cold called a 3bet again. He had KT3x$ss(no-pair). Safe to say I played myself ♦
