After 18 months where I walked away from poker for various personal reasons I realised the love of the game hadn't left me.

So I spent the last four months of 2023 stripping my game out, fixing the leaks I have/had and generally making it better.

I return to the game in February and I'm getting crushed!

Now, I'm a very time limited recreational player so there's no life pressure on me but I want to be the best player I can be within the fairly severe time constraints in my life but when you run bad it is a killer.

I'm a 18 seat micro's SnG player and I was confident I had reshaped my opening ranges, worked hard on my shortstack play, tweaked my shove ranges and felt good about getting back into it then so far I have been hammered!

Being utterly card dead definitely has not helped! I've never known a run of completely rubbish cards so consistently.

Unfortunately I'm also getting crushed in crucial all in spots because I keep running into monsters. In my half a dozen games yesterday I shoved into Aces in the BB twice, once with A10s (them blockers, 'ey?) Had King's snapped by 4s and a set of aces beat by a runner runner flush.

Won't stop me playing tonight though!

And so it continues into Saturday!

Absolute doozy of a beat tonight. Nut straight beat by rivered quad aces, that's not happened for a long time!

Also jammed 10s into AQh unsurprisingly they flopped the A and rivered 2 pair.

AKo didn't improve for me vs 10s.

Lost a 3 way all in for a huge pot with AKo vs 22 vs A4h when a 4 flopped.

I keep plugging away because I know it will change but when you're time limited like me, consistently losing flips is very frustrating but then SnG's are high variance I guess.

So I decided to late reg a couple of MTT's on Saturday night.

The Mini Saturday Speedway was a non event. I bumped along with my 12ish BB's for about 4 hands before I ended up in a 3 way all in with AJo v A4o v 99. A flop of XJ9 meant that was all over very swiftly.

Late regging the Big 5.50 was more fun. Started out with around 20bb, had some hands that allowed me to get in there battling and I found myself 15th of the 90 odd remaining as we popped through the bubble.

I was 5th of 14 with about 30BB when I butchered AJo in the BB and was eliminated by the chip leader in the SB when they rivered a flush.

Annoyed with myself because it was the first major mistake I made. I took probably the worst possible line and played the hand far too passively but it was 3am by then and I think fatigue was kicking in.

Overall I am pleased with my play in the MTT. It was nice to get my share of hands and you need your share of luck too but there is always that nagging feeling of what could/should of been!

A 300% ROI sounds a lot better than $15 and it is a shame I just don't have the time and opportunities to play more regular speed MTT's as I really enjoyed the format.

My next step is to look into regular speed SnG's instead of the turbos I play at the moment....

I think a lot the examples are the normal life of a SNG player. And without more information nobody could say you are running under EV or you are makeing mistakes. Post some graphs or hand histories for discussion. Or have you looked at the hands with ICMizer, HRC or other tools.

When I review my hands I had often 2 kind of answers. First one I make a mistake. Second I play it right but there are things like variance and you have to accept it. If not you should watch TV and play not poker.

Or you are on Tilt? Many questions but with your two posts you will get now answers which can help you. And i think variance is greater in other games.

That's only my opinion

No you're quite right, they're the standard spots you will be in for SnG players. It gets frustrating when they're key hands that don't hold up but that's the nature of the beast.

One thing I've learnt over the years is you need to be properly bankrolled if you're playing SnG's as you're going to have extended runs like this.

As for hand histories, once I've purchased a new laptop and PT4 subscription I'll be posting them. Regrettably my 5 year old dropped his milkshake on my poker laptop and killed it!

My primary target this year is to earn enough through Poker to pay for it. At this rate it'll be a while!

I understand your pain and frustration. I recently moved to GG and started playing some spins there :f_rolleyes: some of the calls and runouts were just dreadful but looking back at them I can see that it's the kind of thing that happens when a player is down to only a few blinds and J3s is the best hand they've seen for a couple of orbits.

At one point I questioned how anyone could play any significant number of spins and still remain sane. Between the suckouts against me when I had the best starting hand to the having to shove a marginal hand and forever running into big pairs it was just madness. After a while variance started to even up and I spent a day just playing spins, about 250 of them. I even made a small profit but it was exhausting. As a player who enjoys deepstack play with a slow structure I find turbos are particularly difficult! I'll stick to cash games for now where I feel I have more control over variance (well a little more anyway lol).

Good luck on the tables :f_drink:
