It's good way to reduce variance, and it costs. You have to decide if the effect is worth the cost or not.
Some think that you should never use it as it's -EV. Some think that the cost is worth the piece of mind.
I would say that the more you have mental game flaws (meaning you get upset if bad beats happen), the more it might be worth the cost. Also I would think it might be wort when you are taking shots to higher stakes, to ease the variance in the beginning.
I have used it cos I have mental game flaw. If I run bad for longer period of time, it might trigger my game level to drop. I have had sitiuations where I overplay hands and +EV game turns to -EV. And it only has happened when I run bad for longer period of time. I have made the calculations, and decided that paying 1bb/100 from my winrate to remove the only thing that can make me play -EV poker was worth it. If you don't have mental game issues, have healthy bankroll and you play a lot, then it probably isn't worth the cost.
