Late (37 players left) in a 6$ Partypoker tourney which started with about 1000 players. BB Has an attempted steal % of about 20, and a preflop raise % of 12. BB is a tight player with about 8% VP$IP.

Was a push correct here? Or should I just have 3-betted or called? Was it really necessary to put my tournament life on the line for a pair of 8s? I'm still contemplating...

Hi Timor83!

A 20% attempted to steal is too low to make a resteal. You don't want to risk your tournament life with a coinflip (which would be the best case here). A 3-bet or call don't make sense either because you are risking too much of your stack and probably committing yourself to the pot. From my point of view a fold is the best choice here.

Isn't a fold too weak here? After all, I may have the best hand at that point, and I could flop a set and win a lot of chips if the button hits his flop as well. If I call I don't think I'm pot committed because the pot would at that point be 21000, and my stack 45000, and if I don't hit or a couple of high cards come, I'd have no problem to lay the hand down.. I agree though that raising all in was probably not a prudent move, but I just wanted to hear from someone else what an idiotic play I made

The thing is that you don't get the odds to hit your set. You have to invest 7500 to hit a set and at most win 54000 from him. That's definitely not enough! And overcards will appear most of the time which makes a call -EV.

I think, if you would have been in BB your play was right. A 3*BB-raise by the button mostly indicates a steal attempt. So restealing with 88 could be a fine move. In most of the cases the Button would have to lay his hand down and if he calls, you are likely in coinflip-situation...
with only 1 active player behind you, this play is also not as bad in the SB...imo...
