[Closed] defining ranges

In all videos I hear times and times again - villains BU calling range, BB raising range, MP limp - call range etc etc. And here I feel I have a problem defining those ranges. Each time villain calls or raises I start thinking of overpairs or sets, no matter what had happened before.

Say, villain in MP2 (FR) calls 3x bb raise by UTG. What is his possible range? What is his range if he's 20 / 11? Or 12 / 9?

I suppose range's definitions is more of an art, not science, yet any help very appreciated. Is there some reading that might help?

Thanks

Hi Antonio,

if you wanna get better in hand reading and defining ranges what helps the most is experience. Play many hands and your hand reading will get better :)

I´m gonna talk to our video producers and see what I can do. Maybe they can do some videos which will focus on defining ranges and hand reading. This would be helpful too. Also our producers talk about in all videos about villains range. So most of our videos should be helpful for you too.

Best regards,

Clemens

oh thanks. If I donated my entire BR just for rake, maybe it would generate enough SPs to reach platinum. Oh wait, no it would not. Have a loan shark handy? lol

I think there should be a way to filter all hand history in my holdem manager to show hands where, for example there was a 3bet pf and hand went to showdown, no matter whether I folded earlier or not. Not sure how, though, too many filters in that damn hm. It looks like to succeed in poker I need to be megarich or r341 h4xx0r lol

reviewing your hands using holdem manager will help you a lot. Those sites should help you how to, e.g., filtering 3bet pots:

Have a nice weekend :)

HEM filters you should use (for example where you PFR, then villain 3B and you called):

PFR = True
Called Preflop 3 Bet = True
Saw showdown = True

ty cryoburn, this is helpful

Still it shows only where I went to SD, not so many hands. I want to try and select all hands where somebody 3bet and it went to SD, no matter if I folded or not. This way I hope to have way more material to analyze.

BTW is there a way to make some statistics about hands in HM? Like, calculate how many % of all hands are AAs etc, or do I have to calculate that manually?

I practice hand ranges using the P.S. Equilator. For example, is villain has VPIP 12 and PFr 10, I put the PFR into equilator and it shows me a 10% range. I can then assume (until I know better :)) if villain has limped, it will most likely be with the bottom 2% of this range. My assumptions will obviously change as experience with the player increases.
I'm quite new to stats also so I can't profess to be any good yet.
