Brian Rast wins the $50,000 Players Championship again

History is made at the WSOP as we have our second double-winner of the event the purists call 'the real Main Event'.

Brian Rast WSOP 2016

Two former champions at the six-handed final table of the $50,000 Players Championship was always going to be a big story, especially as there has only been 11 incarnations of this event.

Had Michael Mizrachi won it for a third time it would have been nothing short of jaw dropping, as he had previously won this event in 2010 and 2012. Unfortunately, for him, he exited in 4th place this year.

Which left 2011 champion Brian Rast to beat Justin Bonomo in a swingy heads-up battle for the title and $1,296,097 first prize. Rast is only the second player to win the Chip Reese trophy more than once.

This is Rast's third WSOP bracelet, having also won a $1,500 Pot Limit Hold'em event in 2011. He also has plenty of high profile results to his name, most notably winning the first ever Super High Roller Bowl last year for $7,250,000.

This victory takes his all-time earnings up to $17,779,199 and moves him into the top ten of the all-time money list.

Spare a thought for Justin Bonomo, who objectively is having a great WSOP but must be wondering what he needs to do to secure a second career bracelet. He now has two 2nd places and two 3rd places at the series this year and has cashed for $1,363,044 so far this summer at the Rio. His consolation will be that he will almost certainly narrow the gap in the Player of the Series race and with one more big result could overtake leader Jason Mercier

At the time of writing the rest of the high roller community are finishing up Day 1 of the $25,000 PLO event and tomorrow all eyes will be on the start of the $111,111 One Drop High Roller.
