From $565 to $1 million
As always the best ROI of the live poker year is likely to be in the COLOSSUS, which this year has just gone to Thomas Pomponio.
Once again the $565 COLOSSUS attracted what will surely be the biggest field of the World Series of Poker, with 18,504 entries all fighting for the seven-figure first prize.
While still massive, it was still a significant drop off from the 21,613 field last year and the 22,374 runners in 2015.
But that will be of little importance to Thomas Pomponio of New Jersey who emerged triumphant this morning, taking it down for $1,000,000.
"Ever since I was a kid, I was dreaming about sitting there and holding that gold," he told WSOP.com after the win.
Elsewhere, Daniel Negreanu narrowly missed out on his 7th WSOP bracelet, losing the $10,000 Omaha Hi/Lo Championship to Abe Mosseri heads-up. Negreanu also came third in the Tag Team Championship, so there is a good chance he will make his mark on the 2017 Player of the Year rankings as a consolation.
