High Stakes Poker: "Math Is Idiotic"
The fifth season of High Stakes Poker is under its way. So far, it has featured young guns going up against the veterans of high stakes poker, which has provided plenty of action and interesting side bets. The fourth episode saw Greenstein taking on Dwan with the conclusion being that "Math is idiotic".
The fourth episode saw one of those young guns, Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies, grabbing the first two hands, but the rest
of the day went against him, as he kept losing pots.
Eli Elezra (pictured right) felt the
young poker mind seated next to him was in distress, so he handed
Ziigmund a rose with an explanation for the curious Negreanu that it
helps him to smell a rose after losing a pot.
Meanwhile, few seats away, Tom "durrrr" Dwan was still on a great run, playing nearly
perfect poker, as Gabe Kaplan concluded. However, things were about to
change in just one hand that would put Dwan's good mood to a test.
The dreadful hand for Dwan featured Barry Greenstein (pictured left) raising to $12,000 pre-flop, as he felt weakness inEastgate who opened the hand with a $3,300 bet. One thing Greenstein
didn't count on, however, was Dwan having pocket aces.
After a
long consideration, Dwan re-raised to $31,300, Eastgate folded and
Greenstein insta-called. Gabe Kaplan commented Greenstein's call:
"I think it's because it's Tom Dwan. J-9 of hearts is usually not a hand Barry would put in $20,000 more with."
The flop came 3-J-10 and Dwan bet $46,200. Greenstein thought for a
while and then with a bit shaky hands raised to $146,200. Dwan shoved
and Greenstein put in his remaining chips, thus creating a $548,700 pot.
Players revealed their cards and agreed to run the board once, as
Greenstein prefers it that way and Dwan said he was fine with whatever
choice Greenstein makes. Dwan quickly changed his mind when a nine came
on the turn, jokingly asking if they said they'd run it three times.
The river brought a five and Dwan (pictured right) swallowed a bad beat, after some time he uttered politely "Nice hand." Greenstein sat in silence for a while, knowing he got off the hook there but eventually said he didn't want to rub it in but had to give an analysis of the hand:
"Math
is idiotic. If you feel like you're going to win, you've got to put it
in."
The whole comment on the hand was, as Greenstein explained later on, all about the catch phrase he is supposed to say during the High Stakes Poker show in order to raise money for Children-Inc.org. For this season, the people on the forums came up with the catch phrase "Math is idiotic" and Greenstein found the perfect spot to say it.
Dwan slowly recovered from the bad beat later in the show and according to the
preview for the next week's episode, he "continues to apply pressure to the
table and no one can find the courage to fight back." Perhaps it is time
to bring likes of Sam Farha at the table to put an end to Dwan's
rampage?
