Shaun Deeb wins eighth WSOP bracelet in Rozvadov High Roller

The American poker legend Shaun Deeb captured his eighth WSOP bracelet last night as he defeated Iago Savino in Rozvadov on the Czech-German border in the WSOP Europe High Roller.

In a field containing bona fide Pot Limit Omaha sharks, Shaun Deeb won through, capturing his eighth World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. The WSOP Europe’s 15 events are nearly at a close, with just two more events on the schedule at King’s Casino. The €25,000 High Roller Event #13 had 38 entries, with the top prize €329,000.

Once inside the money places and at the final table, Deeb, who also won a PLO High roller bracelet in Vegas in July, made light work of the field, winning a crucial flip against his conqueror in Las Vegas last summer, Zdenek Zizka. On American soil, the Czech player Zizka beat Deeb to the bracelet heads-up in a $1,000-entry NLHE event, preventing Deeb winning his second bracelet of the year. While Deeb still took the Player of the Year award, revenge was important and in Zizka’s country of origin, Deeb won a crucial coinflip to exact a very specific retribution.

“ZZ is a great guy,” Deeb told PokerNews afterwards. “We played together so much in that $1k [and] kept talking about the fact that we didn’t want to be at each other’s tables because it was such a soft field. Then we got heads-up. I was hoping to be heads-up with him here, but we got in a flip, and I’m not a good person to try to flip against.”

While Zizka won €142,000 in third place, it was the Brazilian Iago Savino who stood in his way. All-in with ace-six, Deeb got lucky to hit an ace on the turn to save his tournament life against the Brazilian’s pocket eights. With a big lead, Deeb soon got the job done and won what is his eighth WSOP bracelet, levelling him with the current world champion Michael Mizrachi and British mixed games specialist and Deeb’s rival for this year’s WSOP, Benny Glaser.

With only Phil Hellmuth (17), Erik Seidel (11), Phil Ivey (11), Doyle Brunson (10), and Johnny Chan (10) holding more WSOP titles than Deeb, it seems likely that with a fair wind behind him, the 39-year-old will be both a Poker Hall of Famer and Hellmuth’s biggest rival in approaching years.
