WSOP Event #14: Brock Parker Defeats Negreanu

The final day of the $2,500 Limit Hold'em Six-handed event featured 11
players returning to the battlefield. Tommi Horkko took over the lead
from Daniel Negreanu just before the end of the night on Day 2, but
that didn't seem to bother Negreanu much.

It didn't take long before the final table was reached. Negreanu
raised, Jim Buckley three-bet, Brock Parker four-bet, Negreanu called
and so did Buckley. The flop came , Negreanu checked, Buckley bet, Park raised, Negreanu folded and Buckley moved all-in. Parker made the call, turning over . Most unfortunate turn of events for Buckley who held . The following two cards came and Buckley hit the rail in 7th place as the final table bubble boy.

Negreanu held nearly 800,000 chips and was in the chip lead with his
closest challenger Brock Parker holding roughly 600,000. Besides the
most chips, Negreanu also had the most fans in the room, as the crowd
gathered around the table to watch his performance.

Kyle Ray was the first to hit the rail. He moved all-in pre-flop with and found himself up against Kevin Hong's . The board came and Ray was out in 6th place. Barry Shulman was the next to leave the table. First, he lost almost
all of his chips to Brock Parker, then he doubled up but it wasn't
enough to make him recover. He was soon seen making his way out in 5th
place.

While the players were falling one by one, Daniel Negreanu (pictured right) was keeping his
focus on the game but also asking around if anyone has three bracelets
in Limit Hold'em. Since he has two bracelets so far, he was wondering
if winning the third one would put him in the lead. After some brief
research, it turned out that none other than Phil Hellmuth is the only
player who holds three gold bracelets in Limit Hold'em.

Kevin Hong held his ground against Negreanu on Day 2, then he managed
to survive at the final table for quite some time even though he
started off with a small stack, but his great journey came to an end
after he ran into Brock Parker's quads. Action began with Parker
making a raise, Negreanu three-bet, Hong replied with a four-bet and
both Parker and Negreanu called.

The flop came , Hong led out, Parker called and so did Negreanu. The turn brought ,
Hong led out again, Parker raised enough to put Hong all-in, Negreanu
folded and Hong called with his remaining chips. Parker turned over for a set and Hong needed some help from the river, as he held . The river came to give quads to Parker and Hong was eliminated in 4th place.

Tommi Horkko entered the day in the chip lead and it carried him all
the way to the final table. However, he wasn't able to reach the
heads-up play, as he hit the rail in 3rd place. Daniel Negreanu made
quick work of him and everything was set for the clash between the two
most successful players that day.

Negreanu held a 1.65 million to 1.1 million lead over Brock Parker. As they sat down to begin the heads-up play, Negreanu commented, "You're pretty good for an online player." Parker just smiled and the action between the two kicked off.

Negreanu was in a good mood, that is until the deck turned its back to him. In one of the hands, Negreanu raised, Brock re-raised and Negreanu called. The flop came and Parker fired a bet which Negreanu called. The turn came  , Brock fired another bullet and Negreanu called. The river came , Parker bet again and Negreanu commented, "You hit that ace again?"

To get an answer, Negreanu was naturally willing to throw in the extra chips and unfortunately for him, Parker did have an ace, as he turned over . Negreanu commented, "I don't ever wanna see that turn card again. It's like every time it hits, it's you."

Brock continued to grind Negreanu's stack and it was soon all over, as Broch seemed to win every hand in the heads-up match. On the final hand, Parker raised and Negreanu called. The flop came , Negreanu checked, Parker bet, Negreanu raised, Parker three-bet, Negreanu four-bet and Parker called.

The turn came , Negreanu moved all-in and Parker called, turning over while Negreanu held . The river brought and Brock Parker won his first WSOP bracelet. Daniel Negreanu was running hot for most of the tournament, but a cold deck in heads-up play was too devastating for the Team PokerStars pro.

With this 2nd place, Negreanu proved to be quite successful in Limit Hold'em tournaments. He already won a similar event last year, the $2,000 Limit Hold'em which gave him his fourth WSOP bracelet. His secret to success? Negreanu just said, "I've figured something out in these limit tournaments. I can't say what it is because then people will beat me, but I've figured something out."
