FL: Platinum Graduation Exam

by firsttsunami

The third and last quiz of thess series deals with articles from the
Platinum strategy section. You will have to figure out some tricky and
tough spots this time.

We will take a closer look at the following articles:

HEADS-UP ON THE FLOP OOP: C/C FLOP WITHOUT INITIATIVE - WITH SHOWDOWNVALUE

Question 1.

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, 6
3 folds, BU raises, SB folds, You call.

Flop: (4,50 SB) K, 8, 7 (2 players)
You check, BU bets, You?

You've defended your big blind with A 6. The opponent has a BU raising range of 45% and is a tight turn better. How do you continue on the flop?

Question 2.

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, 6
3 folds, BU raises, SB folds, You call.

Flop: (4,50 SB) K, 8, 7 (2 players)
You check, BU bets, You?

You are in the same situation as before. This time, you don't know
whether the opponent is a tight or loose better on the turn, though. How
do you act on this flop?

TURNPLAY OOP WITHOUT INITIATIVE WITH SHOWDOWN VALUE

Question 3.

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, 8
2 folds, CO raises, 2 folds, You call.

Flop: (4,50 SB) 7, 4, 9 (2 players)
You check, CO bets, You call.

Turn: (3,25 BB) J (2 players)
You check, CO bets, You?

You've defended your big blind with A8o. The opponent has the following
opening range - corresponding to 31.5%: 22+, A2s+, K8s+, Q8s+, J8s+,
T8s+, 98s, 87s, A5o+, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o

You made an easy check/call on the flop with about 40% equity:

Board: 7d 9c 4d
Dead:

equity win tie pots won pots tied

Hand 0: 60.429% 58.23% 02.19% 190249 7171.00 { 22+, A2s+, K8s+,
Q8s+, J8s+, T8s+, 98s, 87s, A5o+, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o }

Hand 1: 39.571% 37.38% 02.19% 122109 7171.00 { As8h }

The J
however hits on the turn and your opponent bets again. He won't be
betting his entire range here, though; he will check 22-66, A5o,A6o,
A2s-A5s behind.

His new betting range thus is: 6+, A6s+, K8s+, Q8s+, J8s+, T8s+, 98s, 87s, A7o+, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o

He will bet 2/3 of the times on the river. Can you call here?

Question 4.

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5, 5
3 folds, BU raises, SB folds, You call.

Flop: (4,50 SB) 9, 8, 3 (2 players)
You check, BU bets, You call.

Turn: (3,25 BB) A (2 players)
You check, BU bets, You?

You've defended your big blind with 55. The opponent has an opening range of 40%: 22+, A2s+,
K2s+, Q4s+, J7s+, T7s+, 97s+, 87s, A2o+, K7o+, Q8o+, J9o+, T9o

You play check/call on the flop because you are a slight underdog
against his button range and you want to take a look at the turn - which
comes down with an ace.

The opponent won't bet his entire range here, of course. He will check
behind with the following hands - to avoid a check/raise - because he
has showdown value: 22-77, K3s,
QTo, KJo, KQo,KQs, KJs, QJs

This means his betting range is: 88+, A2s+,
KTs-K4s, K2s, QTs-Q4s, J7s+, T7s+, 97s+, 87s, A2o+, KTo-K7o, QJo,
Q9o-Q8o, J9o+, T9o

Do you still have enough equity against his turn range to call?

Question 5.

Out of these three, which statement is correct:

  • Statement A: You need less outs against aggressive opponents
because they will bet the turn more often. In case you improve your hand
to the nuts, you can check/raise on the turn, giving you 2 BB in
    implied odds.

  • Statement B: I need at least 4.5 outs in order to see the turn.

  • Statement C: The more implied odds I have, the less outs I need.

Question 6.

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with T, 9
MP2 folds, You raise, CO 3-bets, 3 folds, You call

Flop: (7,50 SB) K, 7, 5 (2 players)
You check, CO bets, You?

You've open-raised T9 from MP3 and CO 3-bets you with the following range: 66+, A8s+, KJs+, QJs, ATo+, KQo

You have 2 overcards to the 7 and 5, a backdoor flush draw and a 1-gap
backdoor OESD. Do you have enough outs to call again on the flop?

Question 7.

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with A, 9
You raise, 4 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4,50 SB) A, T, T (2 players)
BB checks, You bet, BB calls.

Turn: (3,25 BB) T (1 players)
BB checks. You?

You have open-raised A 9
from UTG. You hit your top pair and make the usual continuation bet.
Your opponent plays check/call. Another ten shows up on the turn, giving
you the nut-boat.

Your opponent is a TAG with the following stats: (27/21/2.0/37)

Is this a good spot to check behind on the turn?

Question 8.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Q, 9
3 folds, BU raises, SB folds, You call.

Flop: (4,50 SB) T, 5, 3 (2 players)
Hero checks, BU bets, You call.

Turn: (3,25 BB) 9 (1 players)
Hero checks, BU bets, You?

An aggressive and showdown-bound LAG open-raises from the button with a
range of 50%. You are in the big blind and have an easy call, of course.

You miss the flop, but you have 2 overcards to the 5 and the 3 - a J on the turn would give you an OESD while any would give you a flush draw. You thus check/call the flop and hit your 9 on the turn. How do you react to Villain's bet?

Question 9.

What's the "game-theoretical optimum"? (Mathematics of Poker)

  • Answer: It means the optimal style is to play in a way that can't be exploited.
  • Antwort B: It means the optimal style is to play in a way
that exploits your opponents leaks and extracts the maximum EV from
    every single hand.
  • Antwort C: It means the optimal style would be the way you played in case you knew all of your opponents' cards.

Question 10.

Preflop: Hero is BB with T, Q
2 folds, BU raises, 1 folds, You 3bet, BU calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) A, 7, 9 (2 players)
You bet, BU calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) J (2 players)
You bet, BU calls.

River: (6.25 BB) 7 (2 players)
You?

You 3-bet QT
for deception against a button open-raise. You make your continuation
bet and he calls the flop. On the turn, you bet again with your OESD.
You have absolutely nothing on the river. Your opponent in this hand is a
reasonable TAG (22/19/1.8/36) and you have the read that he can make
tough lay-downs. What's your line?
