Hi everybody,
as I have recognised while scrolling through this forum, I am not the first 888 user to whom this has happened - in other cases even much more money was involved.
However, since I think that the way 888 treat their rake-paying customers is so utterly unbearable, I am going to share my personal experiences in this thread.
As for me: I started playing poker at 888 a few weeks ago and managed to build a ~50$ bankroll from the 1$ free no deposit bonus I was granted after creating my new account by grinding my way up through the 9-/10-man Turbo SnGs.
Last week, on the 22nd of December, I was suddenly, without any previous warning, logged out of my account. I received an e-mail in which I was informed that my account had been disabled and instructed to send them a proof of my identity. I was accused of having logged into my account from Schleswig-Holstein (an area of Germany where 888 cannot offer its services for legal reasons). However, the truth is: Neither am I resident in that restricted area, nor have I ever logged into my account from there. Conclusion: I have acted according to the terms and conditions of 888 at any time and haven't done anything wrong.
Nevertheless, as explained above, they disabled my account.
Not only did they disable my account, they disabled my account when I was playing in four 1$ SnG tournaments, making my stacks at these tables a feast for the donkeys and causing me to lose 4$.
But the extent of audacity in this whole story hasn't reached its climax yet.
Not only did they disable my account without me having done anything wrong. Not only did they do so when I was registered to 4 SnGs, causing me to lose real money I had in play. They did this after having reassured me the morning before that uploading a copy of my ID-card would be sufficient to prove that I am not resident in the restricted area, thus avoiding any future complications.
Later on, I was told by another staff member that an ID-card copy would not be the kind of document that was required to solve the problem but that some kind of utility bill was needed instead. Conclusion: I uploaded my ID-card copy (sensitive personal data) completely in vain because of contradictory information I was given by different staff members.
888 could have chosen among different acceptable possibilities to treat the whole issue:
- disabling my account at the very moment they became aware of the irritation concerning my place of residence but not when I have real money in play
- giving me the correct information as for which type of document to upload as a proof of identity right from the beginning instead of providind me with contradictory, partly wrong information
- at least warning me and advising me to stop playing real money games until they confirmed me that everything would be alright
Instead of all this they basically told me this: "Please upload a copy of your ID-card to prevent your account from being disabled. If you do so, everything will be alright and no future problems will occur." Just hours after I had followed that instruction they disabled my account whatsoever - with the consequences described above.
After my account was finally re-enabled yesterday I immediately wrote them an e-mail in which I summarised the whole course of events, pointing out that mistakes made by 888 and not by myself caused me to loss 4$ (plus potential winnings during the time of restriction) and politely asked them to refund me at least the 4$ I had in play when I was from one moment to another kicked out of my account.
This morning I have received a very succinct answer in which it was basically stated that according to their terms and conditions proof of identity could be demanded at any time and that 888 refused to assume responsibility for the mistakes they have made in this whole issue. It appeared to me that it was a simple standardised text which they sent me without even having read my last e-mail carefully.
For the whole behaviour that has been displayed by 888 during the last days I have only two words: dubious and shabby
I understand that for many poker players the money I lost is less than one preflop raise or even one big blind but I think fairness and transparency should be granted to every rake-paying user no matter the stakes.
I am curious to see if the whole story will experience one last turnaround in my favour, in the favour of the game and the credibility of online poker.
Any advise, comment or help is highly appreciated.
cliffs:
- got my 888 account disabled for 5 days due to wrong accusations concerning my place of residence
- had 4$ of real money in play when the restriction came into force (lost them obviously)
- was previously (wrongly) reassured by the 888 support that uploading an ID-card copy would solve the whole problem and prevent my account from being blocked
- received contradictory information as for what kind of document would be a sufficient proof of identity by different staff members
- was refused a refund of the money I lost as a consequence of mistakes that were made by 888, not by myself
- after complaining received nothing but a succinct standardised mail --> 888 support apparently did not even study the whole issue carefully
