SB: 16.36 BB (VPIP: 41.71, PFR: 20.00, 3Bet Preflop: 10.45, Hands: 179)

SB posts SB 0.2 BB, Hero posts BB 0.5 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 0.7 BB) Hero has A♦ 5♣

fold, fold, fold, fold, SB raises to 1 BB, Hero calls 0.5 BB

Flop: (2 BB, 2 players) 6♣ K♠ 6♠
SB bets 0.5 BB, Hero raises to 1 BB, SB calls 0.5 BB

Turn: (4 BB, 2 players) 5♥
SB checks, Hero bets 1 BB, SB calls 1 BB

River: (6 BB, 2 players) 8♠
SB checks, Hero checks

Villain was on a heater with a WWSF of 50% and a WTSD of 45%.

On the flop I thought there was a good chance I had the best hand with the low paired flop, and the turn made things better.
By the river I didn't think I had a strong enough hand to bet, but strong enough to call a bet if one came.

Would you have played this any differently ?

Raise a flop isn't the best decision. You don't want to force him to fold. He may have many worse hands. After raising the flop he will probably continue only with Ax, Kx, pocket pairs, sometimes with good Qx. It means that you will stay in play with his value range.
In this spot you should induce blefs from SB by calldown.

The flop is an interesting point. So if the villain has a SB open raising range of 60% on the flop I have 45% equity. If that is true then raising isn't a good idea as you say - I should call as you need roughly 37% to call on the flop.

However, A5o even in BvB seems to have little showdown value ? Would you really be prepared to call down all streets with this holding ?

Yes I play call on the flop. I want him to bluff with Qx, Jx, Tx. He never folds here Khigh and Ahigh. If you play raise on the flop you force him to fold any Q, J, T at the latest on the turn. I don't think that you can also force any small pocket pair to fold especially on this kind of board.

I don't really agree with the reasoning in the OP. If we are ahead on the flop and even solidly ahead on the turn (now beating all Ax), what changes that much on the river? Does his turn call tweak his range towards mostly pocket pairs? Sure, the A8 got there, as well as the occasional flush. As played, consistency requires a thin value bet on the river.

But I agree with hairysnake. I'd call flop, call all turn cards and call many rivers unimproved.

Another thing about raising on the flop for value. What does the calling range look like value-wise? Think about it, there would be no value-part at all in the calling range if all A+rags are raised. This is a balancing problem, but a good opponent could run you over (bet-bet-bet with any two) whenever you call on the flop.

I know that sometimes when you're running on a heater you're too frequently raising, expecting to win the pot though it was not correct and though you were supposed to be just calling as its the case right in this hand, you decided to raise.

You should obviously just call, except you see him bluffraising on the flop and you play raise/calldown but thats overall too expensive. better keep his weak hands in by just calling and avoid to be facing a 3bet, absolutely not knowing his range since your raise looks bluffy , as it often is as he'd expect you to be just inducing with a strong hand like 6x and Kx.

Why immidiately revealing your strenght on the flop and how to balance that play? With Ax and with floats, you wanna just call and you can make a better decision, based on his behaviour on the turn. you have more information about his range. If he bets again on a blank Turn and River, i'd call down in first place but given this runout, i'd fold the River. The only reasonable draw now got there. Questionable whether hes following through with just nothing.

River as played is a check. Raising a showdownvalueable hand on the flop is basically a bad idea and is insufficiently balanced.
