If I would have only called his 3-bet, what leads you to the conclusion he would have posted a bet instead of just a checking, as he did here???

He checked because you had the initiative in the hand. Usually when you're the last to bet, you're expected to bet again, and most do, because generally it means you have the best hand. He'll bet, because you showed weakness by calling when you could have raised.
This is a typical situation: An unraised pot, a very scary board.
BB bets the flop and you raise it with anytwo cards ( with flushdraw or without )
He 3bets to get further information on your hand. Now by capping the flop, you indicate a strong hand. But if you onl call his 3bet, you are trapping him because you make him thinking that your raise was a bluff and he keeps the initiative.
So he makes a continuation bet on the turn and now you can raise and get an additional small bet out of him.
And yes, by capping the flop you show no weakness at all, but in this case you raise is not for protection. So question is how to get most value out of BB.
