iPoker - €0.05/€0.10 (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BB: 29.6 BB (VPIP: 21.88, PFR: 18.75, 3Bet Preflop: 14.29, Hands: 34)
Hero (UTG): 42.3 BB
CO: 9.7 BB (VPIP: 50.00, PFR: 8.33, 3Bet Preflop: 16.67, Hands: 13)
BTN: 82 BB (VPIP: 43.75, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 34)
SB: 6.5 BB (VPIP: 13.21, PFR: 11.32, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 55)

SB posts SB 0.2 BB, BB posts BB 0.5 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 0.7 BB) Hero has 4♣ A♦

Hero raises to 1 BB, CO calls 1 BB, BTN calls 1 BB, fold, fold

Flop: (3.7 BB, 3 players) 3♥ 8♠ 3♠
Hero bets 0.5 BB, CO calls 0.5 BB, BTN calls 0.5 BB

Turn: (5.2 BB, 3 players) J♠
Hero bets 1 BB, CO calls 1 BB, BTN calls 1 BB

River: (8.2 BB, 3 players) A♣
Hero bets 1 BB, fold, BTN calls 1 BB

So some background to this....

I only normally play Full ring as I usually find shorthanded to be a bit too much of a frenetic rollercoaster. And yes, I know that Avataren insists that FR is enough to bore him to death but I guess it's what you're used to...

Anyway, I found myself in a game where the other players were all extremely loose passive and were calling with absolutely anything, often without connecting with the board.

The one exception being the SB who was the complete opposite, extremely tight and very easy to read.

But all of that notwithstanding, was I being far too loose raising with A4o in UTG? And on the turn with that flush appearing, my plan was to call a raise with a view to just check call the river.

But when the river came the Ace, I assumed that they could easily have KJ, QJ, JT etc so went for one more bet. And I guessed that if they had AJ then they would have raised on the turn.

But OTR should I have checked and then just called, as anyone with a better ace is not going to fold and may have raised me etc?

As I say, after being at this table for about 20 minutes, I definitely saw my raising range widen immensely. But was I being too loose I wonder...

Thank you!

Charlie

Hmmm, I'm looking at this in the cold light of day and I think that I was drunk when I played this hand. I don't mean literally drunk - although the sensation is basically pretty similar! This hand came at a point where I had been running hotter than I have done for a long time. By this point in the game, I was already winning over 45% of the hands and taking in a few big pots in succession, busting other players, clearly putting them on tilt etc.

And so it really did go to my head in that way that is basically the other end of tilt whereby you lose all perspective on what is correct.

So in the end I was lucky throughout and didn't end the session in flames, But the moral of the tale is that losing control when winning is just as dangerous as when losing. Or as a Buddhist monk once said, pleasure is actually more dangerous than pain as at least with pain you never lose awareness of the problem. Pleasure can just make you forget everything...

At least that's the light in which I view a hand like this. Or am I being overly strict now on myself...? I suppose there's an argument for loosening up depending on one's newly acquired table image when running hot. But still, too loose here methinks.... :f_eek:

Hi!

Preflop its a fold unless maybe everybody overfolds which looking at the hand is most likely not the case. Low off suited Ax are generaly pretty poor hands and when they end up in big pots OOP they become even worse. This is just what happens here when CO and BU both call. On MP3 A9o would be my default(A8o is also possible sometimes) but A4o is a clear fold, this hand just wont make profit in the long run.

Flop...betting only and correct play.

Turn...betting is fine since I assume they will call quite wide on this flop so you can bet for some protection here. Problem with a bet is obviously that you wont rly make them fold all their air since FDs will again call and then you will end up in bigger river pot when folding wont rly be an easy option. So checking and reevaluating depending on the action is also fine play.

River is again easy.

Thank you Dawnfall!

As I said in my other post, I have done the appropriate penance for that ridiculous play of A4o in UTG....

Forgive me Father Poker, for I have sinned! And to make it worse, I have sinned OOP :f_frown:

But all that notwithstanding, your further advice on the post flop play was very much appreciated...

All the best,

Charlie

Well considering the fact that you are probably the most feisty and forthright of supporters that the game of FLHE could ever hope for, it's only right that you get a name check here and there. You are after all pokerstrategy's very own "warrior ambassador" for Limit :)

Which is why I have no intention of telling you my Pokerstars name....my fishy flesh must remain unharmed as long as possible :f_biggrin:

I only just noticed the edit but I am surprised you need to ask. All I can say is that I now understand why Danish murderers are so popular - in TV terms I hasten to add! - around the world _cool:

Although dare I say it, I'm actually more of a fan of Martin Beck...um, from Sweden :f_p:
