NL5 weird hand

Ok, this was my :rage: end of session hand

Preflop: I decide to 4bet/call vs UTG (midstack or fish) or SB (weaker range) , and 4bet/fold vs. BTN (he has a nutty line). There is so much dead money and I don't wanna see a flop 4-handed with AKo. Best case scenario is everyone folds and SB comes along. This happens :)

Flop: Given that SB looks fishy I decide to check back as I think he'll call most PPs here, and his line thus far looks PP heavy, as well as AJ+. Should I bet to make him fold out his equity share and possibly call with worse?

Turn: He takes a stab. I was concerned over the sizing but I felt that AJ+ could be making this play, so I call turn to fold river unimproved.
River: Bink. I'm now ahead of all of his PPs except a weird AA. I'm not giving him many FDs given his preflop play. I think he would play AJ and AQ this way. I'll be honest and I pretty much snap called on the ace.

I included the result for sympathy :P

I am interested to know how this could have been played better.

Seems strange to be prepared to 4-bet/fold preflop, and then not fold on turn here.

Hey @yohan

Was saying that I'm 4-bet/folding vs. BTN but 4bet/calling v.s. UTG or SB. If BTN had called the 4bet I'd probably have been trying to check down and folding to any reasonable sized bets.

P.s. is the N7 a Mass Effect thing? Loved that game.

Fair enough. I guess you can argue for a combination of value and fold equity preflop here with AK. But folding to a 5-bet requires a calculation. You are 100 bb deep and have invested 20 bb.

(The reason for the N7 is exactly as boring as you can imagine )

Hi redrawstump

Preflop: why does BTN have a nutty line? He simply 3-bets small when faced with a small open from UTG. Definitely not folding this after you 4-bet so big.

Postflop: I feel that vs a fish, who can be assumed to be passive, you can just fold the turn in this huge pot vs a big bet (and 0 guarantee that he won't just fire river again)>

The fish called preflop vs a 3-bet and then called vs a 4-bet. We should think that he has at least a hand he likes so all pairs, some big broadways and connectors (including spades which we don't even block).

And checking back flop is fine imo here.

Thanks Bogdan,
I think that if BTN were to jam over our 4bet then he has KK+ almost always. I know we block those hands but that seems to be the way it goes from my (limited) experience.
What do you think is the best line preflop? Folding to the 3bet seems weak and I don't want to play AKo oop & multiway. I thought my sizing was a little on the small side for a 4bet at the time.
Agreed that I should have folded the turn

Why is checking back fine on this flop HU vs fish? b/f half pot not optimal?

I'm under the impression that we rather not bet .vs fish/calling station with Ace high and no possible backdoor draws. what's the point of the bet ?
If villain's check looks weak, maybe take a stab on turn ?

Why do we call this turn ? he's bluffing ? shove now or shove a non-spade/straight card on river ?

When I play like this I think I'm mostly likely in-love with the fish and think he plays with 32o all the time which is wrong and costs us money.

4-bet pre to isolate fish is fine.

Generally we have a cbet vs fish but this is a 4-bet pot and better never folds and some worse calls and/or raises which is a problem.

We could try a small 1/3 bet if he is passive since he won't raise us without a hand and we can then check back turn to get a free card.
