I will try to (from now on) when judging my own hands aswell as that of other player with the following structure:

tagging players (based on VPIP/PFR/AF/cBetF/cBetT/cBetR):
1) Loose passive
2) Loose aggressive
3) Tight passive
4) Tight aggressive

Judging hands:
1) determine personality player
2) ranges (Equilab)
3) equity vs pot odds

I assume you are not using any HUD? Then yeah, those kind of tagging is very good. If you are using HUD then no need to put them into different category, you can Check from the stats either he is passive or not. Just categorize either he is a good player or a calling station and so on.

I'm using HM2, I bought it via Pokerstrategy due to Elephant being outphased

I'm actually using the tagging (loose/tight, aggro/passive) to determine player ranges...it helps me more by just stating he's a "good player" or "calling station", although if i have a specific read, i'll add it to the notes, it will be more like "loose aggro, likes to bluff the river" or something like that.

Do you have a good system for putting players on a handrange? I'm open to suggestions :f_biggrin:

just read the article about shorthanded (6-max) the ORC and some tips&tricks for 3bet-value, 3betbluff, 4bet-value, 4betbluff

http://www.pokerstrategy.com/strategy/bss/1671/1/

insights after reading the article:

Ax, KT+ hands (preferrable suited) are great hands to bluff 3bet/4bet with, since you have blockers (the chance that your opponent also holds an Ace or King is naturally reduced, because we are holding already one of them)

also useful:
Pot odds - Required equity
1:1 - 50%
2:1 - 33%
3:1 - 25%
4:1 - 20%
5:1 - 17%
6:1 - 14%
7:1 - 12.5%
8:1 - 10%

http://www.pokerstrategy.com/strategy/others/1897/1/

Preflop: Hero is BB with 6 :club: 9 :diamond:
3 folds, MP2 calls $0.10, 2 folds, BU calls $0.10, SB folds, Hero checks

Flop: ($0.35) (3 players) 3 :diamond: 9  8
Hero checks, MP2 bets $0.20, BU calls $0.20, Hero...

The first step is to calculate the required equity.

Risk: $0.20
Potential profit: $0.75
Required equity = 0.20/(0.75+0.20) * 100 = 21%

pot odds: $0.95 / $0.20 = 4.75:1

If you have already HM then I doubt that you have to put so wide definitions for the tags. Fish/REG or whatsoever should be enough.

Poker isn't that easy buddy. It's with a lot hard work and a lot of discussion of hands and especially your own.

It's always good to read articles but some may be over your head, cause they might be more advanced stuff. So try to select rather beginners ones or not so bluff-like situations. You might start to bleed a lot money there.

In those spots you don't need to calculate equity but your calculations are correct.

hehehe, I wish it was

ofcourse with the help of your coaching, someday it will allow me to beat/crush NL200, but I'm still a long way from there.

I read in the blog of Pleno1 (if you can call it a blog), 2 interesting statements:

1) POSITION + SKILL = PROFIT
2) At play money/micro stakes, when you flop top pair keep betting, once they raise, fold.

moreover, concerning 3bet/4bet bluffs:
Here is the algorithm for how often we need a bluff to be successful.

ev (bluff) = fold % * pot size - call% * bet size

Here are the %'s for how often we need people to fold to make a pure bluff a profitable (not taking into account post flop implied equity)

3bet - 67% need them to fold around 2/3 time. std 3bb/9bb, if they fold more than 67% then we are showing an immediate profit

4bet - 60%

5bet - 45% (with pocket pairs and Axs which have decent equity)

5bet - 55% with completely random hand

So working out the EV of the 5bet all in pre flop is

ev (5bet) = fold % * pot size
+ call% * (our equity * total amont we win - his equity * toal amount we lose)

So working out the EV of the 4bet bluff is
ev (4bet) = x* (9bb+3bb+1.5bb) - (1-x) * 19bb

The quick math to remember is that villain needs to fold to the 4bet 60% of the time to make it an immediate profitable 4bet bluff.

Easy and simple rules but difficult to follow most of the beginners. :( But poker is very often about logical move and understanding the basic things. With time you will get better and understand it even more. You are always welcome to ask questions if you have any here or either contact some other guy via the forum.

Strongly advice to forget about 3bet/4bet bluffing, you wont be doing that on your stakes. You will just waste tons of money. Huge problem for a lot of beginners who just watch videos and see coach doing that and themselves not even understand how or when to do it.

Question 1: Post a hand for evaluation where you have played on a 6-max table (short-handed).

---link to be created---

Question 2: Evaluate one of the hands submitted by other members

NL4 87s

NL10 SH KJs

Question 3: Consider the following situation:

$10 NL Hold'em (6 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($10)
MP ($10)
CO ($10)
BU($10)
SB ($10)
BB (Hero) ($10)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5  , 4
2 folds, CO raises to $0.40, BU calls $0.40, SB calls $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.60) 3 :spade: , 2  , Q  (4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.20, CO Raises All-in, BU calls All-in, SB folds, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

There's no mention of personality or stats of villain, so we'll treat them as unknown. Since it's 6max, I've given villains a bit looser range, even more so for the Button, who's getting good odds for drawing-hands (as do we )

CO: 26.09% 22+, A2s+, K8s+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o
BU: 47.21% 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q6s+, J8s+, T8s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 64s+, 53s+, A2o+, K8o+, QTo+, J9o+, T8o+, 97o+, 86o+, 75o+, 65o, 54o
SB: 26.09% 22+, A2s+, K8s+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o

We hit an almost perfect flop: we pick up some great equity with our OESD & FD, if we are behind, we have like 15 outs to improve our hand (vs 2pair, set, overpair hands for example)

Equity Win Tie
CO 19.39% 18.78% 0.61% 22+, A2s+, K8s+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o
BU 14.20% 13.47% 0.73% 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q6s+, J8s+, T8s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 64s+, 53s+, A2o+, K8o+, QTo+, J9o+, T8o+, 97o+, 86o+, 75o+, 65o, 54o
SB 19.39% 18.78% 0.61% 22+, A2s+, K8s+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o
BB 47.02% 46.63% 0.39% 5h4h

We are relatively deep here (each player has 100bb), so it's very surprising to see CO & BTN shove all-in on this flop...especially since we have shown strength by betting into 3 opponents (!)...even a fish would only do this with a made hand or a strong draw, so we should start excluding some hands from there ranges (I'll leave SB out, since he folds and the CO & BU will most likely continue with same kind of hands), so both CO & BTN will have a shoving range all-in like: (let's assume they continue with toppair, 2pair, strong-draws like oesd or n_fd)

QQ-TT, 33-22, AJs-A3s, K3s+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, A5o-A4o, KQo, 54o

Equity Win Tie Loss Hand
Player 1: 27.085 % 25.295 % 3.640 % 71.064 % QQ-TT, 33-22, AJs-A3s, K3s+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, A5o-A4o, KQo, 54o
Player 2: 27.085 % 25.295 % 3.640 % 71.064 % QQ-TT, 33-22, AJs-A3s, K3s+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, A5o-A4o, KQo, 54o
Player 3: 45.830 % 44.059 % 3.604 % 52.338 % 5h4h

But we need to consider that villains, will only play with the suited cards if they are  therefore excluding a lot of our outs...since we have no showdownvalue and only a strongdraw...let's see our equity now:

Equity Win Tie Loss Hand
Player 1: 37.037 % 37.027 % 0.029 % 62.944 % QQ, 33-22, AhKh, AhQh, AhJh, AhTh, Ah9h, Ah8h, Ah7h, Ah6h, Ah5h, Ah4h, Ah3h, KhJh, KhTh, Kh9h, Kh8h, Kh7h, Kh6h, Kh5h, Kh4h, Kh3h, JhTh, Jh9h, Th9h, Th8h, 9h8h, 9h7h, 8h7h, 8h6h, 7h6h
Player 2: 37.037 % 37.027 % 0.029 % 62.944 % QQ, 33-22, AhKh, AhQh, AhJh, AhTh, Ah9h, Ah8h, Ah7h, Ah6h, Ah5h, Ah4h, Ah3h, KhJh, KhTh, Kh9h, Kh8h, Kh7h, Kh6h, Kh5h, Kh4h, Kh3h, JhTh, Jh9h, Th9h, Th8h, 9h8h, 9h7h, 8h7h, 8h6h, 7h6h
Player 3: 25.926 % 25.917 % 0.027 % 74.056 % 5h4h

pot odds: $1.60 + $1.20 + $9.60 + $9.60, we need to call our remaining $8.40 to win $30.40, so we need minimum 27.63%

We have only 25.93% equity, so need to let this one go: fold

Question 4: Consider the following situation:

$10 NL Hold'em (6 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($10)
MP ($10)
CO (Hero) ($10)
BU($10)
SB ($10)
BB ($10)

Preflop: Hero is CO with A :club: , K :spade:
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, BU calls $0.40, SB calls $0.40, BB calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.60) A :spade: , 4 :club: , 4 :diamond: (4 players)
SB checks, BB bets $1.20, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Button can call again with good odds if the blinds join in, so i will put the button on a relatively looser range:

BTN: 30.92% 22+, A2s+, K9s+, QTs+, J9s+, T8s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 65s, 54s, 43s, 32s, A9o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o, 87o, 76o, 65o, 54o
SB+BB: 22+,A2s+,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,T9s,98s,87s,76s,65s,54s,43s,32s,ATo+,KTo+,QTo+,JTo,T9o,98o,87o,76o,65o,54o

So we hit our ace on the flop, which is good news, so let's look at our equity:

Equity Win Tie
CO 69.03% 64.76% 4.27% AcKs
BU 10.03% 8.48% 1.55% 22+, A2s+, K9s+, QTs+, J9s+, T8s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 65s, 54s, 43s, 32s, A9o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o, 87o, 76o, 65o, 54o
SB 10.47% 8.87% 1.59% 22+, A2s+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, 43s, 32s, ATo+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o, 87o, 76o, 65o, 54o
BB 10.47% 8.87% 1.59% 22+, A2s+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, 43s, 32s, ATo+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo, T9o, 98o, 87o, 76o, 65o, 54o

The donkbet of BB makes absolutely no sense...we were pre-flop aggressor and he should know it's a perfect board for us to c-bet on, so why donkbet? If we would have missed the flop, he could have easily have picked up our cbet. With what kind of hands would villain do this with? As we said: strong made hands like 4x would have waited for our cbet, so I'm putting villain now on a pocketpair or a weaker Ax kind of hand:

BB: 99-22, AJs-A2s, AJo-A2o (i have exclude AA-TT, AQ+, since they would probably 3bet preflop)

Against this range we have some great equity:

Equity Win Tie Loss Hand
Player 1: 82.801 % 78.936 % 7.729 % 13.334 % AcKs
Player 2: 17.199 % 13.334 % 7.729 % 78.936 % 99-22, AJs-A2s, AJo-A2o

Unless he's trapping with 4x kind of hand (but then his donkbet wouldn't make sense), we have the best hand 4 out of 5 times, so we could:
1) raise for value
2) call for more bluff induce

depending on villain (passive or aggressive) I would raise against the passive player and call against an agressive player

just watched podcast part8 from Veriz.

I like the part with the questions (even more than playing the tables )

It was nice to work with the excel sheet again and work through some exercises, so thanks for that.

Good Job! Homework #7 Done!

About Question #3:
In this case, you decided to bet out yourself and two players behind you go all-in. You would have to invest $8.40 in order to participate in a $22 pot, which corresponds to an equity of 27.63%.

Board: Q:h 3:s 2:h
Dead:

Equity Win DrawLoss Hand
Player 1: 38.538% 38.538% 0.000% 61.462% 5h4h
Player 2: 14.540% 14.540% 0.000% 85.460% QQ+
Player 3: 46.921% 46.921% 0.000% 53.079% 22-33

You get the required odds even when you're exclusively up against very strong hands!

About Question #4:
Top pair / top kicker has been and will always be a hand that's tough to play, especially in a multi-way pot. In this case, you've hit a nice flop, but you're up against 3 opponents on a dry board which doesn't allow for any dangerous draws.

A fold on this board is, of course, too weak. You can't really hit much better and there might be worse Ax hands willing to pay you off.

If you think that your opponent(s) is/are often willing to go broke on the flop with worse hands, raising might not be the worst of choices. But one thing is clear: if you raise, you have to go all-in on the flop! Raise/fold with your top pair is absolutely out of question.

Even though this might leave a bitter aftertaste in a 4-way pot, you should play this like a way ahead / way behind spot here - by playing it passive, you will extract the maximum from weaker hands and bluffs while avoiding big losses against stronger hands.

Best of Luck on the Tables.

They are just introduction to real stuff which you can open by playing tracked. :P If I'd start again then there would be no other way to play for me than tracked. There is just so much amazing stuff on PokerStrategy which you just don't want to leave there without reading/watching it or even using the hand evaluation forum.

Good grief, welcome back rogervieri!

I can't really advise on which games to play, that decision is very often considered a personal preference.

What I can do - and will - is wish you the best of fortune no matter what you decide!

Very best regards and have fun,

Mal.

just watched this video from Bierbaer:

Interesting the overcall part A♠: 5♠: vs 7♥: 8♥: indeed as he states, if you hit the multiway flop for instance 4♦: 5♣: 6♣: then your cards are super face up; but if you hit the multiway flop 6♠: 9♠: Q♠: then you have much more options, and people may call your bet with :Qx: hand
