Hi,

Raising by pot size
Things are a big different at some rooms (such as Titan Poker), which have players raise by a given amount. Raises are then calculated as: Amount entered + amount needed to call a previous bet/raise.

If you wish to raise to $80 after having already invested $10 earlier in the betting round, you must enter $70, since you wish to raise by $70 (to a total of $80).

You can then calculate pot size raises as follows:

2 * size of opponent's bet/raise + size of the pot before your opponent's bet/raise was made.

Above was the second part of the lesson on "How to calculate a potsize raise"

Hand example(#4) from the article

Pot : $20
Villain bets : $8 oop
Hero is considering a raise that would give villain 2:1 odds.
Equation that was given in the article on pokerstrategy is
2 x villains bet + pot size before villains a bet on the flop.
(2 x 8) + 20 = 36
Raising to $36 dollars would give villain 2:1 odds, my question is the total pot after hero's raise would be (36+8+20)= 54
54:28 is not 2:1. It's also written as "villain would have to pay $36 to stay in the pot, wouldn't it be $28?)

article is from pokerstrategy.

Its not "+pot size before villains bet". It is after villains bet and our call.

A better way to look at it is call the bet and and then raise potsize.
pot: 20
villain bets 8
hero ""announces a raise", calls 8, pot is 36 now, so hero raises 36 more which is a total pot size raise to 44.
villain has to call 36 to win 72

Any other way is incorrect.

not sure if I've understood it correctly.

If we call, the pot becomes $36. If' I'm not mistaken, we then add back our call size to the total pot size which is $44 total.

very confusing in the article, because its explanation of "raise by $36". It isn't mentioned in the article that our raise size includes our call size. Again "raise by $36".
Not all poker sites do this but it's prob helpful to know how to "raise by given amount".
