Emphasis on getting to showdown with an equity edge. folding lots of the grey area spots which are going to be marginally profitable etc.

By small balling I mean that you have small pot hands, and big pot hands. With small pot hands you keep the pot small until you have the nuts, and you don't want to play for stacks without a big pot hand.
Basicly you give away some equity (as you don't take the max EV line) but reduce the varince (less allin flips).
