Lol. Mainly wrong. When I said 'You can tell just exactly what everybody is like' I should have said 'as long as you're not Boris'. I'll give you a list of professions I know and you can try to fit them to the picture if you like.

Ship broker (still my best mate)
Civil servant
Solicitor
Lesbian (not sure that's a profession, but I like to think it is)
Photographer
Oil company manager
Class bully (probably a policeman or a dentist now)
Maths prof
Airline pilot (me and him used to open the bowling for the school cricket team)
Violinist
Architect

It was the big chess match last night. We drew, so we only managed to come second in the league. Still a good effort as they outgraded us heavily on all but the top board. The most frustrating thing was that our bottom board managed to turn a clear win (mate in 4) into a draw, and then lose it on time. A draw would have won us the match and the league. :f_mad: I can't grumble (although I think I just did) because I lost too. I was just outclassed really. I looked up the line I played afterwards, and my book said '11....e5 is often played by amateurs, but it gives white a nagging initiative'. Bollocks! That's just what he got. I defended manfully, but he managed to swap off all the pieces, and in this position

I thought 'Oh! I should have had a look to see what the pawn ending is like for me. Oh shit!' and resigned. Ho hum. I had a quick chat and analyse with him afterwards and discovered that (a) he's graded about 2200, (b) he played in the 4NCL (that's the big national chess league) at the weekend, (c) he knew I play the Alekhine and looked up a line to play 'in the nearest copy of New In Chess that he had lying around'. In contrast (a) I'm graded about 2050, (b) I played poker and shouted at the kids a lot at the weekend, (c) I thought he'd probably know that I play the Alekhine, but all I have lying around my house is Nerf gun bullets and pictures of princesses. At least I don't have to play again until September, and that's if I decide to carry on. I'd rather play poker, but they'd miss me if I go. Maybe I can persuade goldchess and dublimax to relocate to Leicestershire and play for my team so that I can go play poker instead. That would work.

Keep up Zebra Man. I'm not going to write about the full horror of my Easter weekend again.

I'm currently hiding in my bedroom writing this. I actually managed to play some poker last night after they all went to bed. I didn't run terribly well again, so I just reviewed my hands. I was mainly happy with my play, but here's a couple of hands for comment.

1) Villain is 18/12, AF 1, 6% 3bet, fold to 3bet 2/4 times over 50 hands. Preflop I would have folded to a 4bet, but expected him to call, as he did, quite often. I felt that the turn card probably helped his range more than mine, and I couldn't see many worse hands that would call, so I checked behind. I'm sure I have to call the river bet. Does this seem reasonable? Should I bet/fold the turn?

PokerStars - $0.10 NL (6 max) ZOOM - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

Hero (BTN): $10.00
SB: $27.08
BB: $17.91
UTG: $12.19
MP: $10.05
CO: $6.59

SB posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.15) Hero has J♦ J♥

fold, MP raises to $0.35, fold, Hero raises to $1.10, fold, fold, MP calls $0.75

Flop: ($2.35, 2 players) T♣ T♠ 9♦
MP checks, Hero bets $1.15, MP calls $1.15

Turn: ($4.65, 2 players) 8♠
MP checks, Hero checks

River: ($4.65, 2 players) 7♦
MP bets $3.86, Hero calls $3.86

2) Only seven hands on Villain. As soon as he started making these retarded little raises, I thought 'Oh shit. He's got a set. Wait. He could have AT or A3! 18 combos of that, 6 combos of AA, TT, so I have to get it in'. I admit this is a bit of bad beat/fml hand, but my real question is, can you ever fold bottom set 100BB deep, and if so, when?

PokerStars - $0.10 NL (6 max) ZOOM - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: $14.55
Hero (SB): $10.64
BB: $13.58
UTG: $4.88
MP: $10.66
CO: $19.94

Hero posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.15) Hero has 3♥ 3♦

fold, fold, CO raises to $0.20, fold, Hero calls $0.15, fold

Flop: ($0.50, 2 players) T♠ 3♠ A♦
Hero checks, CO bets $0.30, Hero raises to $1.10, CO raises to $1.90, Hero raises to $3.75, CO raises to $5.60, Hero raises to $10.44 and is all-in, CO calls $4.84

Turn: ($21.38, 2 players) K♣

River: ($21.38, 2 players) J♣

Hero shows 3♥ 3♦ (Three of a Kind, Threes) (Pre 19%, Flop 4%, Turn 2%)
CO shows T♣ T♥ (Three of a Kind, Tens) (Pre 81%, Flop 96%, Turn 98%)
CO wins $20.42

Hand 1: I bet the turn and see what happens on the river. If you bet the turn you get free showdown if you want about 90% of the time. It's still a value bet (thin since it's a 3bet pot) but I prefer betting instead of checking and letting my opponent value bet all hands and check/fold his air when he misses.

Hand 2: I shove over his 3bet usually. Those minraising games are annoying. When his range is so strong I just get it in asap. I folded bottom set on AQ4r 3way once and I still remember it as one of my biggest folds but the actions were: UTG in FR cbets, I raise OTB, SB 3bets for about 60bb total and UTG reshoves for a bit over 100bb. That's a spot where I think you can fold it but HU, CO vs SB no way I'm folding it. Sometimes I might not raise it but definitely not folding.

Hand 1: Bet bigger on flop - turn as played and fold river. You might be chopping, but it reeks of middle pair boat. You might pick off an overplayed AT, but I'm not convinced he calls with that hand OOP in 3bet pre.

Hand 2: Yawn. Come on jb you flame everyone else for posting bad beat hands. Who cares about set over set!! I agree with manu though - shove over his small 3bet. And no, don't ever fold sets on the flop. Just to repeat, never fold sets on the flop.

Unlucky on the chess though. I was hoping you guys were going to beat those smug fuckers. I was genuinely disappointed.

It's funny how emotional following blogs gets.

have fun with the family!

Yes, yes but hand 1 you say it 'reeks of middle pair boat' so you fold, but hand 2 'reeks of a set', I mean I just don't think he sizes his bets like that with two pair or Ax, and yet you call. You can't have it both ways.

That's why you shove over min3bet and don't play FLHE with him.

When you 4bet flop you have a set anyway and when he 5bets flop he has a set as well. What are you supposed to do? Min 5bet every flop with a wide range to "see where you stand"? I don't think it's too much discussion to it. Notice he could also have quite a few Ax :spade: in his range that think it's the nuts and wants to trap your A2o.

Zoom specialist. Pfffff. Zoomfish more like. The first thing I would say is that playing 400bb deep would make me shit my pants. I can't remember ever getting this deep, because I take regular breaks, both forced and unforced. Having said that, I think you still should be 3betting AKo for value preflop. As played, I'm not really sure what you're trying to achieve by playing the flop and turn so passively OOP, and I'd be tempted just to check/fold on the flop. I know you have some equity, but the Q and T probably connect with his range pretty well, and you don't have a made hand. Maybe peeling once is OK, but you're playing guessing games really, and when the board pairs on the turn you're not drawing to the nuts anymore, and this deep that's probably a bad thing, so I'm afraid I don't think you played it right, but I expect someone will disagree with me. They usually do.

I agree with preflop 3bet pre for value.

I don't agree with c/c once on flop. C/r is better imo since you have a gutshot to the nuts and BD NFD. OK-ish equity but definitely not enough to call and go for implied odds. I prefer taking the FE now and reevaluate.

Thanks, jb and manu! =)

Yeah, 3b pre this deep should be necessary.

@zoom specialist - I just don't know any other blog where someone analyse their zoom hands on the limit that I'm playing (I play NL5 up to NL10 _biggrin: atm) - so it' s nice to see some NL10 SH Zoom hands with analysis here, so I threw my hand in your blog. ;)

I wouldn't c/c 100bb deep, but 400bb, single raised? I don't think it's entirely unreasonable. If Jc, Jd or Js comes you may get his whole stack if he has QJ or a set. My understanding is that the whole 'drawing to the nuts' and 'implied odds' thing is v important when you're that deep.

Yes, nuts are more and more important the deeper you are. This doesn't mean you can call gutter OOP for implied odds imo, especially vs unknown. If he shits his pants this deep he'll pot control a set the second there's 3 to a straight on board.

I think 400bb deep c/r gets even better. What's he gonna do with 44 if the turn brings a flush and he doesn't hit quads? What matters the most when playing deep is 'does your opponent realize stack depth and adapt?' or he just clicks buttons regardless of it? It's more obvious preflop where you go broke with KK 1kbb deep if opponent never folds QQ+, AK, but then you don't if he only stacks off KK+.

When you raise there you can rep TT, QT, KJs, NFD, AKs, 44, maybe even QQ. If you have AK in your range you should have QQ as well. Basically, you rep everything there can be on that board.

Btw, position advantage decreases the shallower you play so if you c/c and leave lots behind for turn and river he gets to use his position even better in theory. This deep, even a c/r is not quite enough but you get the point I think...

Of course, easy route is 3bet pre, cbet flop and go from there since the combination of the 2 actions will be very +EV considering our hand and the board.
