So I've been watching a few of Phil Shaw's videos, mostly with the idea of finding an alternative to Hold em to maybe play a couple of sessions a week. But, when looking at the traffic for these games on Stars,I was pretty shocked to see how much there was for 5 Card Draw. Is this a relatively recent explosion or has its always been a well supported game? Certainly a lot more than any of the stud games.
I've noticed there is some content on here for the game so would anyone recommend I learn a little about it? Browsed a few threads so I know there are a handful of players on here who at least dabble in 5CD. Fun to play as a part time alternative to Hold em?

I made many $$$$ last year from 5CD and am currently redistributing it to the lovely NLHE players of Pokerstars.
There are plenty of interesting threads here about it. You could read EVGalois articles and watch his videos, although I saw him playing Zooooom NL10 last night, so I don't know what to make of that. Hurricano's posts are always worth reading, although he's a cheeky bastard, and BigPooch on 2+2 is THE MAN. There's also some stuff in my blog between August and December last year. You just need to learn what constitutes a strong hand, and also where the fold button is. Enjoy! 
i made like $5 bucks playing 1 trable 5CD in the lower limit, and lost $2 playing zoom 5CD 
it is a fun game, my only problem is that i don't get paid with my good hands ♠ since i play fixed limit is hard to extract some bets when you hold strong hand. And i've lost a lot with some relative strong hands, everytime i get a straight i run into a full house...

Ok, so the most important thing about your post was that I discovered your blog.
It's probably about time I started my own. I've never really made any significant progress at this game
so I'll give it a go and see if I can find that little bit of extra focus to move forward.

Morris, 5CD is great old style game and if you put some effort into learning basic strategy and playing solid ammount of hands, youll see its great game to play... I find that these days when everyone is running Hold`em and PLO, specialising in games like 5CD, 7 Card Stud or 2-7 SD can be proffitable...
I myself live from playing mixed games, and graphs on those games are more steady and swings are not that high as in Hold`em, not to mention PLO.
Competition on those games can be a bit stronger tho, there is higher concentration of regs so try playing smaller limits till getting the gripp arround game mechanics and running decent ammount of hands...
Good luck playing 5CD if you decide to try ... let us know how it went...

When I see those high stakes hands, I'm tempted to say 'it's a really aggressive dynamic, and you don't know the history and table images' but for sure it looks like a load of fish with too many $$$$ donking around to me. I mean it's FL ffs.

Just for the record; This is not trying to be mean to anyone ... Its about an opinion... I am new on this forum but 2 topics i posted i ran into this guy that throws theories in peoples faces that are incorrect and being very agro about it. Yes, Huricano is cheeky, agro and swearing when someone has different opinion ( well you have two examples on this thread alone )... And on top of it, those are not his theories but he is copying from 2+2 and reposting here...lol
I think if we all throw theories here we should be able to discuss them without someone being agro about everything everyone else says...

I live from playing poker for over 6 years and am mixed game specialist, everything i say is what i learned playing... so when someone is basicly saying, dont play poker, competition is too tough i find it bad for people that are trying to play the game... I want to help them get there, not blocking their way...

Well, I think it was fairly obvious he was being ironic, but whatever. Personally, I'm happy to have lots of smart experienced people around to try to learn from them.

I've started playing more stud lately. It seems to me to be quite a lot like 5CD but more interesting. They're both games that are mainly about understanding the relative hand strength of pairs, two pairs and trips in various situation imo, although I am probably a big Stud fish. Try watching Phil Shaw's videos and picking a game you like. 2-7 TD and Badugi are lots of fun too but very swingy.
Lots of $$ to be won playing 5CD although it is a very simple (dull) game.
