It is impossible to talk/explain anything to non poker playing person how it different from general gambling, they just cant figure it out and if you don't want lose your friends, just don't talk about it

Talking about family, its even worse, its like telling your parents that you are drug addict. There are several exceptions when your parents is ok about it, but it is rare. And about other people who asks where your money come from I would say from doing some Internet stuff whats is to hard to explain...

Of course everything changes when you win in sunday million and in a day, everyone loves you, even your exes and other people that ignored you in the past starts to love you and in one moment poker is a skill game and everyone wants a piece of you.

There's an 'edgy' factor to it that makes it easier to explain to non-family members who don't have the need to be concerned about your well-being.

That's true and it's also possible that age changes the reason why it is more difficult.

At the 18-25 age, the loved ones may well be older, guardian-like figures who are bothered about the risk and lack of a work place team culture.

At the 40+ age, a person can be aware of their potential to be a role model to younger loved ones and therefore can try to protect them for making ill-informed decisions.

I wouldn't object to my younger relatives becoming poker players, in fact I would prefer it to them accepting unskilled work, but I don't want it to be their first choice.

My parents are ok, with me playing poker. Problem is, they see it as a waste of time, because I'm grinding NL5

Hmm I don't know. I'm 18 and all my friends around the same, but i'm still reluctant to tell them that I play poker to supplement my living.

The thing I struggle with is when people talk about it and brag how good they are at poker. I always sit there thinking to myself... i'm better than you but I know they just wouldn't understand. Then when it comes to a homegame obviously that one flip you lose and they think they're the best poker player in the world!

The other thing is when my friends tell me they are gambling on slot machines, or horse betting. I always feel the need to tell them that they are just wasting their money and should play other games that aren't luck based.

But from my perspective... I just don't tell people. I would lie if they asked me outright, and I can imagine a lot of people will find it cool but that's the problem for my age group. I don't want to tell them, because then they go and deposit themselves because they know I do well, without knowing the effort i've put in. Then they go and lose their money and i'll feel bad.

For first post i just want to say that it seems that most of you guys make success in progress that you actually explained to your parent all about poker.
Only I am not. _cry: _cry: _cry:

Any help? :f_cry:

I got magical solution for you mate...

Just tell them "I play poker!" it works like a charm.

Yea Gerovit,i understand :f_frown: but that is not that easy at all.
I am 18 yo and still live with my parents. When they found out that i have about 2000$ :f_grin: winnings from poker they actually freak out and they almost throw me out the house. My parents, especially mom, thinks that poker is all about gambling and that at the end every player finishes to live under the bridge. :f_cry:
I still play a little at Stars but i can not find my way in poker after my father tell me that if i decide to turn pro i will have to leave them i continue my life somewhere else. :f_cry:

I have a lot of the same things where you talk about. i am also 18 for 4 month now and my mother hates poker too. But i was very clear to them that this is what i want and they have to accept it. I say also that i have never deposit money and make my money out of nothing from 0 (what is true :f_biggrin: ). I see that when i lose it i will not deposit and the are now fine with that.

ps: i do not say anything about my winnings and my loses because they wil freakt out when they hear the i lose 500$ in a day or so. The can not understand that.

my parents also finally understood, that its posivle to make money, I told them I have 700 euros from poker. Now they say - how much time did it take to earn :) I now play nl10, and sometimes take shots at nl20

I still play a little at Stars but i can not find my way in poker after my father tell me that if i decide to turn pro i will have to leave them i continue my life somewhere else.

If you are pro, why not rent your own flat? :) or if you don't even earn for rent being a pro, then what the pro is ? :)

edit: and the easiest tactiks talk with other people is to tell them you are investing. Then people often say good words :)

Also there are young people at work which understand that poker is not gambling. But not fully. So I say I play poker, but I don't talk about it too much.

Be real, no parent is going to throw out of their home their own child, especially since you`re just 18.

Well, you can confront them or not, you decide. If you choose not to confront them, tell them you understand them and you simply mind your own business and continue to play poker as usual. If you choose to confront them expect some mid term arguing untill all of you get tired.

Personally, I didn't have any problems with my parents about poker, but if I did I sure would choose not to confront them and simply agree with them and do what I do. That's how I handle most of the issues with them. Still there are times especially on serious issues for you to confront them and tell them how you feel about that thing.

Tbh if parents dont agree.. I would just end up playing more and more, and would probably benefit allot more.. already live on own due to being a student.. and I would come home from 'gamblin' and wave a few K in there face..

as it is.. im lucky as i said.

read..

'Jonny magic and the card shark kids' Its about this very thing and his life playing cards and not telling his parents.. its from D&D or something.. (no idea about the sport) but he ends up counting cards and playing poker for a multimillion bankroll.

I tried talking about it with people that works with me at my job. In the beginning they refuse to believe I played poker as a part time job where I earn few hundred bucks each month. I told them instead of working and traveling to the stupid part time jobs where I work 2-3 hours I sit behind my computer and just play poker instead, my hourly is slightly higher there and I don't have to travel forth and back.

Tried to explain them and they still refuse to believe poker is skill. After showing them some poker programs and crush live at casino once, they are slowly believing it.

My parents refused it at first, they said it was gambling blabla. But once I show them I made $5000 (about $400/month) within a year they slowly accepted it as a semi part time job.

I tell everyone I play poker! :f_biggrin:

I'm very interested/passionate about it and I don't mind telling everyone! My mum always laughed when I told her stuff about it, but now that she sees that my BR is building up (slowly) she doesn't laugh anymore. It does happen that she asks how I'm doing.

My grandparents think it's great! They play card several times a week and they think it's great I play a cardgame.

My lovely girlfriend supports me. I don't play poker when i'm with her, but she doesn't mind if I do. It does happen sometimes that I play but she doesn't really mind.

I love poker!

Think it depends on who you tell.

My grandparents would have loved it, they all grew up before TV, and during the war. There wasn't much else to do at that time other than play cards!

My dad likes to watch it on TV, and when I told him that I'd started playing live games with friends, he actually encouraged me to give online a try for small money (how I ended up here really). He knows I'm intelligent and said if I put my mind to it, I could be great, but obviously academic work was still the priority for him.

My mum would probably worry, that's just how she is. Not cos she'd think I was a degen, just mum's worry!

My friends... girls wouldn't get it. Guys, well lots of them love it.

My colleagues... I work in an investment bank, there's big appreciation for the skill it takes to play, but seeing as I still don't count myself as any good (micro stakes player), I don't mention that I play cos I fear getting dragged in to a super hard game!

I just tell them I deal drugs. Then, when they see I'm keeping a straight face and awkward silence ensues, I say: "Just kidding. I play poker." Works like a charm.

Admittedly, I'm a little biased in my sample. My parents' reactions went like this:

Dad: See? Told you you'd like poker, didn't I? (He was the one that got me into Poker, knowing I have a mathematical mind and would love it if I learnt some strategy. He's an awesome, awesome dad.)

Mum: Well, it's your money.

That being said, I reckon that telling acquaintances or potential gf's about the fact that I play poker is a good litmus test. If I tell them, and point out how over the long term, it's a game of skill, and explain how that is, and they insist on believing that it's just gambling and that I have a problem, etc. they probably wouldn't be a very good friend or partner in the first place. I wouldn't want a friend/partner who can't update in response to evidence. (Request for citation is acceptable, in which case I could show them nanonoko's graph or something.)

Mind you, I tend to hang out around young, intelligent, open-minded people to begin with. Selection bias is incredibly prevalent here. This is my own, personal take on it: I wouldn't be confident recommending this course of action to anyone else.
