fwiw, instantly bet on horses if you have a small edge there. the effort/time it takes to place a bet is close to zero and there is quite a high betting limit, so if you're betting $5k and getting on average a 2% ROI on that, you're earning on average $100/race. With a race on average every day you should be able to support your family well, while you still have the rest of the day off to do whatever you like

Horses are just like everything else. There is variance or as I like to call it "the depends factor". And just like anything else, you have things you should always do, things you should never do and things you may or may not do depending on the situation. Example you should never bet on a horse who doesn't run we'll on a muddy track when it's raining, never play against a nit who 12 tables, who plays fit or fold on the flop, who check raises your turn bluff, etc etc.

I've been playing poker and betting for over 40 years nothing stays the same and to get good at something takes time and effort; and to stay good takes updating to the current situation. But no matter how much time and effort you put into something there will always be a depends added into your decision process.
