Q1, I have initiative:

NL10 KK 3 way

Q2, A post I have commented on (and got overuled, LOL):

A8s

Cheers,

You are very welcome.

I'll get to your next homework in the next day or so and in the meantime I want to say that your links work perfectly and I am glad you are participating in the forums.

Best of luck at the tables.

Hello again,

I am pretty happy to be only 2 more lessons away from finishing the course, although I am still not comfortable answering the hand situation questions so will continue to go over all the stuff I have already done. I am enjoying the course but sometimes find the podcasts and lesson vids pretty tedious with coaches having to answers the same questions over and over for the late comers and guys who have clearly not being working through the course from the start!

Looking forward to starting my blog when I've done the course, may do sooner if I get time. Would do it this evening but going to my local casino for the £30 deepstack tourney which I chopped 4 ways for £725 last time I went. Some awful players there TBH. Should be about 150 runners too, lots of bullets to dodge there!

Any way, home work.

Question 1: Post a hand for evaluation where you have either a) freeplay, b) slowplay, or c) multi-way pot situation.Question 3: Consider the following situation:

NL10 AQ btn multi way pot

Question 2: Evaluate one of the hands submitted by other members.

I will post this answer when I have evaluated another hand, sorry not done yet.

Question 3,

$25 NL Hold'em (10 handed)

Stacks & Stats
UTG ($25)
UTG+1 ($25) rock
UTG+2 ($25)
MP1 ($25)
MP2 ($25) LAG
MP3 ($25) maniac
CO ($25)
Hero BU ($25)
SB ($25)
BB ($25) calling station

Preflop: Hero is BU with Q , J
5 folds, MP3 raises $1.00, CO calls $1.00, Hero calls $1.00, 1 fold, BB calls $1.00

Flop: ($4.10) 3 , J , A (4 players)
BB checks, MP3 checks, CO checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($4.10) Q (4 players)
BB bets $2.05, 2 folds, Hero...?

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 3,

I would definately just call here as my hand is too strong to fold but too weak to raise. It is quite possible that I am already beat but we could get to a cheap show down. Depending on the river card and bet size we face on the river I would be planning to fold any sizable bets on the river.

Here is the missing answer/post for Q2 from home work 6.

Question 2: Evaluate one of the hands submitted by other members.

jj bu vs utg limper

Finding it slow going now as in Lesson 7 we are advised to start playing SH?
Is this true? I have barely got to grips with FR and have only played around 6k hands! I don't think SH is really for me just yet, so I will complete the work in lesson 7 but stick to FR and maybe test the water with SH every once in a while.

Anyway, about the live tournament at the weekend: I chopped 2nd place for £565 (£30 deep stack entry, 129 runners).
I really love tournament play and am sure this is where my future lies but for now I must get the basics down and suppose this is the place to do it.

Cheers, homework 7 to follow.

I will submit my answers now just to see if I am on the right path but I am continuously going over the videos and articles again and again until all the info goes in!

Question 1, My hand where I based my play on opponents stats;

97s in BB v many fish

Question 2, A hand I have evaluated of another players;

1st NL10 SH 76s

Well done, keep up the good work on the evaluation forums.

Question 3: Consider the following situation:

$10 NL Hold'em (7-handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($10)
MP ($8)
MP2 ($9)
CO ($10)
Hero($10)
SB ($10) (17/13/2.6/24/1212) [VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS/Hands]
BB ($10) (27/9/2.0/29/333) [VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS/Hands]

Preflop: Hero is BU with 6d , 7d
4 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, SB calls $0.40, BB calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.20) 3d , 3h , Td (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($1.20) Jd (3 players)
SB bets $1.00, BB calls $1.00, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 3, I would raise here to protect my weak flush against another diamond on the river. I don't see sb or bb holding a FH here as they have not tried to protect their JJ against FDs on the flop, of course this could be a slow played 10s full but thats unlikely. A higher flush is also possible but again unlikely (and unlucky). Taking stats into account, SB looks pretty standard TAG and BB is edging towards the looser style. SB could be taking a stab here with TP after no aggression was shown on the flop and BB probably has a big diamond and possibly an SD.
I raise here to 4 or 5 dollars which basically commits me so would only fold if both players shove.

I like your analysis and the decision you have come up with. The one thing I want to add is that the main reason we raise the turn is for value versus pairs and especially pairs + draws that can still call us there. We also want to raise because there's no point in letting them see a cheap river and there are quite a few bad cards for us.

Question 4: Consider the following situation:

$10 NL Hold'em (8-handed)

Stacks & Stats
UTG ($8)
MP ($10)
MP2 ($9)
MP3 ($6)
Hero ($10)
BU ($10) (25/21/3.8/26/1250) [VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS/Hands]
SB ($10)
BB ($10)

Preflop: Hero is CO with Jh , Js
4 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, BU 3-bets to $1.30, 2 folds, Hero calls $1.30

Flop: ($2.75) 6h , 9s , Tc (2 players)
Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 4,

I would be leaning towards betting 3/4 pot here. I would consider a check raise as villain is an aggressive player but if I check and villain checks behind there are lots of turn cards that will make life very difficult for our pocket J's here.

If villain raises me after my bet I may be forced to fold as a call would surely commit my stack to this pot. I would have to use info I have witnessed on villain before making my decision (sorry, I took the easy way out!).

I hope these answers are okay, if not I will go over the stuff again.

Thanks,
Zach

Why would we want to donk into an aggressive villain and then fold an overpair in a 3-bet pot? We either donk/shove or simply check to him and let him cbet. Once he cbets we can throw in a small ck/raise and go with the hand.

Well done, homework 5 done !

For Q3 I would say that we ought to consider raising the station player with our 2p. It's very likely that he is betting any Ax there and calling stations don't fold that.

Of course with more info on the player we can consider just calling. And by default stations are passive so we can consider raise/folding.

Well done, homework 6 complete !.

Hi Zach,

If you have not played enough FR hands and you still enjoy FR I suggest you stick to it and just play it until you are ready for a new challenge. That can be months or even years down the road depending where you play and what limits you play.

Congrats on your tournament placement, for the second week in a row. Playing cash games will make you a better tournament player but keep in mind that variance is a lot larger in tournaments so you need more volume.

Best of luck at the tables.

Bogdan

Hi,

I have been playing SH and really got into it and found it probably more enjoyable. I had to drop down to 5NL as I was getting beat up at NL10 and didn't like the way my graph was going!
I have returned to FR for now as I found I could easily play 4 or 5 tables and make a profit at NL10 and still feel I have a lot to learn here first.
The best thing about SH was the hands and FPPs I could quickly amass but like I said I was in a downward spiral.

Homework 7.

Question 1, Post a hand for evaluation where you have played on a 6-max table (short-handed).

NL10 SH AQs SB multi way

Question 2, Evaluate one of the hands submitted by other members.

NL10: AJo

Question 3: Consider the following situation:

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($10)
MP ($10)
CO ($10)
BU($10)
SB ($10)
BB (Hero) ($10)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5h , 4h
2 folds, CO raises to $0.40, BU calls $0.40, SB calls $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.60) 3s , 2h , Qh (4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.20, CO Raises All-in, BU calls All-in, SB folds, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 3,

I am confident I would call in this situation. If I am facing two sets here which is possible I have around 44% equity. If I am unfortunate enough to be facing Axhh then I have around 20% equity, this hand is also a possibility but would be happy to take my chances here as we could quite well be facing AQ, KQ type hands and more often than not one set will be present. Our equity is well above the 30% needed here.

I call and close my eyes!

Question 4: Consider the following situation:

$10 NL Hold'em (6 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($10)
MP ($10)
CO (Hero) ($10)
BU($10)
SB ($10)
BB ($10)

Preflop: Hero is CO with Ac , Ks
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, BU calls $0.40, SB calls $0.40, BB calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.60) As , 4c , 4d (4 players)
SB checks, BB bets $1.20, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 4,

In this situation I would call as I am confident my hand is ahead here. There are not many SDs and no FDs so it is safe at this point to not protect my hand which could fold out weaker hands who may invest more on later streets. It is very possible that villain has Ax and will bet/call on all streets.

The only real danger hand for us to be aware of here is probably 54s although if there are total fish in the hand as we know J4o is even possible! If btn squeezes here I would consider a fold and if CO became too aggressive I could also find a fold and wait for a better spot. This is all player dependant of course as stats would be very important here if opps start getting 'creative'.

So, call, hope btn folds, then call down and bet when checked to. (player and turn/river dependant of course).

Although I am on lesson 8 I realise how much I still have to learn when asked to evaluate other peoples hands.

I really struggle to decide the best lines in so many situations post flop and turn. I have been doing the quiz's in the learning path and still get basic spots wrong. I often find myself in uncomfortable spots. I need to knuckle down and be more active in the hand evaluation forum. Even if it means just looking.

I think my inability to retain information does not help.

Hi Zach,

I do recommend you stick with FR for a bit longer. Short term variance is higher in SH and if you don't feel comfortable just yet you are better off working on your fundamentals at FR.

Generally speaking our equity won't be well above 30% but should be enough to allow us to call and at least BE. It really comes down to what they can have and how often our draws are dominated.

I like your explanation for this one and you are spot on.

Of course everything depends on villains but in this case we have little info (or we can assume we do).

Best of luck and keep me posted !

A lot of it comes down to practice as well. Seeing it one time won't be sufficient so experiencing it yourself or seeing more often will definitely help in the long term.

The best thing to do is not to give up. As long as you love the game you can get better at it. As long as you work hard you will improve (and you're doing great so far).

Best regards,

Bogdan

Hi,

I am still alive!

I have been taking some time out lately to concentrate on getting a new job but still thinking about poker a lot.

I have been playing but mainly tournaments as I quite miss them.

I will hopefully complete the course over the next couple of weeks. I genuinely think that studying poker has taught me lots about life too and has really given me the push and confidence to seek a job that I enjoy! Maybe it was the realisation that it takes lots of hard work to succeed at anything.

Be back soon,

Zach

Hi,

Hopefully I will be able to get some hands together later to post but for now I'm just submitting my answers for 3 and 4.

Question 3: Consider the following situation:

$100 NL Hold'em (9 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($100)
UTG+1 ($100)
MP1 ($100)
MP2 ($100)
Hero ($100)
CO ($100)
BU ($100)
SB ($100)
BB ($100) (18/15/3.7/23/732)[VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS/Hands]

Preflop: Hero is BU with 8 , 9
4 folds, Hero raises to $4.00, 3 folds, BB calls $4.00

Flop: ($8.50) 3 , 6 , 8 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $5.50 BB calls $5.50

Turn: ($19.50) J (2 players)
BB checks, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?

Answer 3,

On turn here I have to bet to protect my hand against hands with a big heart in them. I put villain on a range of any pocket pair or broadway (suited or unsuited) cards (excluding AK as this woiuld have been 3 bet pre from such a player).

If I am reraised here I will try to get the money in as I can't always be fearful of being up against a bigger flush. If I get the money in then most of the time it will be up against a set which is a profitable play over time.

BONUS Question 4 (optional question): Consider the following situation:

$200 NL Hold'em (6 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
MP2 (Hero) ($327.95)
MP3 ($207.45)
CO ($415.55) (TAG)
BU ($373.60) (TAG)
SB ($200.00)
BB ($218.00)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with 7 , 8
Hero raises to $7, 1 folds, CO raises to $23, BU calls $23, SB folds, BB folds, Hero calls $16

Flop: ($72) 7 , 8 , 8 (3 players)
Hero checks, CO checks, BU bets $52, Hero calls, CO calls

Turn: ($228) K (3 players)
Hero checks, CO checks, BU checks

River: ($228) Q (3 players)
Hero bets $110, CO raises to $340.55 (All-in), BU folds, Hero?

What factors and concepts that you have learned so far would you use in evaluating this situation? What would your action be?

Answer 4,

Villains range here makes this a tricky spot but looking at the equity we need when up against QQ+ or AK. I see we are getting 75% which is far greater than the 25% we need. Meaning we only need to be correct 1 out of 4 times to break even. Even when up against just QQ+ it is a 50% situation which is still a profitable call.

For this reason I would call but would not be totally comfortable with the situation.

Hi Bogdan,

Yes, I am getting back to studying and playing. I am dropping down to NL5 for a while until I can beat that game!
I started really well at NL10 but soon thought I could get 'creative'. My graph still shows a profit but it has taken a big 'downswing'.
Have been playing some NL5 and have been doing okay so fingers crossed I can concentrate on playing well and not just focussing on my graph.

I have recently completed the final exam from the course and was wondering if I will receive my results soon?? I still have lots of studying to do.

I was also succesful in getting the new job I went for and I also qualified for a biggish tournament at G Casino this weekend. A £220 BI with around 13k up top :f_cool:

I have been studying tourney play a bit more recently as I really do enjoy em.

Anyway, speak soon, cheers,
Zach

Hi Zach,

Ideally you don't want to get "creative" at these limits and instead try to play a pretty solid standard game that's based purely on valuebetting and taking pots away from people that don't want them.

Big congrats for the job and the tournament. It sounds like you have quite a few interesting things happening in your life.

I will check for your course exam as I do not have access to them myself.

Best regards,

Bogdan

Hi Bogdan,

OM frickin G.

Salford G casino 25/25 series, 297 entries, BI £220. 15k FTW.

ME? 3rd for 7K. My biggest score ever. smashed my PB by 6K lol.

Day 1 started pretty bad got it aipf with KK v A10cc, flop came ccc. Down to 8k from 25k starting stack. Basically ground it out all day until last two 40 minute levels. Couple of steals and resteals then couple of doubles then turned into a KO machine. Finished day 1b with 138K, 9th in chips going into day 2.

Very tired today as slept only 12 hours in 3 nights! excitement I think. Had big chip lead with 12 players left then lost 2 big flips to knock me down a bit. Would've hit around 2.8 mill with 7.5 mill in play with 10 players left. I was really that big. It seems all the earlier flip wins turned to losses around final table bubble time as I doubled up too many shorties.
I can't complain as at the money bubble I picked up KK after a table move and got it in v QQ. Moved again shortly after bubble then picked up AA back to back, payed once.

Had a great time this weekend but 33 hours of poker has really took its toll.

Look forward to hearing how I did in the exam.

Cheers,

Zach

ME?

Big Congrats,

That's a pretty good prize :)

33 hours for 7k means that you were paid a whooping 212/hour. Not too bad :)

Yes not a bad weekend over all.

I did run pretty good but made some big folds and made some bold moves.

My next question is, what should I do next? I would like to obviously brush up on my basic knowledge (maths, theory, hand reading etc.) as I am still weak in so many situations. My weakest quality is being unable to put people on hands. I am getting better but only make sense of what happened after going over it at a later time. Probably folded the best hand on at least 6 occasions in the tourney in biggish pots. Probably an OK stat though I suppose?

There isn't much to read on MTTs for silver so what would you recommend?? Also any videos or books you could recommend? I have all the usual 'old school' books and also The Mental Game which has helped. Lots of books are now outdated and more of a money spinner for the author than any actual help I feel. I need structure. And a plan.

Obviously after a win this big I am starting to dream of giving it all up, leaving the wife and going pro, this I know is just stupid but we can all dream.

So realistically I need guidance as to my next move.

TY,

Zach.

Hi Zach,

You are only at the beginning of your journey.

Unfortunately I am not a MTT or SNG player so I cannot help you with advice there. All I can say is that these type of games are very variance ridden, more so than cash games, so you do need to dedicate some time and have a decent bankroll.

I would say go with whatever type of game you like but if you do not have time to dedicate for tournaments continue playing cash.

Also, create a plan (I have a few videos out there on how to create a proper plan, based on my opinions of course) and try to see if you can stick to it. You'll be surprised on how much this type of stuff opens your eyes to your realistic goals.
