Regarding sizings: he probably chose those bigger sizings to simplify the ranges. Think how much complexity is added once you bet add the possibility of having a bet/calling and bet/folding range not just a shoving range. The more options our opponent and we have, the more complex. It's harder to figure out what range to check/call, check/raise, bet/fold and bet/call than what to shove and what to check/fold.

That thought had crossed my mind.

New poker maths article up on our web site.

http://www.modernpokereducation.com/preview/bonus_maths_3.pdf

I have pointed out to my coauthors that I have now written as many maths articles as they've written hand analyses, so expect more of the latter soon. :f_cool:

I dont see figure 3. Just the heading. Also, I may be blinded by the equations but I could not find the explanation for the parameters in the equation H(h) = a+ be^-kh - 1. (hope i typed it correctly). We know "a" but ... srry never said I am a math guru

Figure 3 is definitely there.

You just have to look at the picture to see what the function looks like, which is frankly less than exciting. The parameters don't have an explanation. They're just parameters in a function that's decreasing and falls off a bit faster than linear when h is small, which is what hand strengths do in preflop NLHE.

I think the bet was me v TT, and I don't think I'd bet against him on anything tbh. Even if we played chess he'd probably find a way to win. :f_mad:

It was number two son's first day at secondary school today. Me and mrsjb were both really nervous for him, but I got home and apparently it was 'great'. Wtf is that all about. No idea where he gets that from.

Zimmers was a complete disaster tonight. Mineriva got disconnected (unless he can prove that there was a nuclear strike on South Africa, I'm going to ask Silvia to ban him), and, because we set the games up as MTTs, and they were final (and only) tables, Stars was giving him about a minute every hand. It all got so slow that we just shoved all in every hand and gave up. It was dire.

Thazar told me I need to blog more, but I am a blogged out empty vessel at the moment. I've put all my energy into my poker maths articles recently. :f_cry:

There should be another bonus hand on our website next week. I'll keep you posted.

"Dire" is a bit strong
As the beneficiary of the shove-fest I had my best zimmer's outing ever.
I do feel badly for the two chip leaders that fell to my garbage-hands-that-hit, but I'm sure I'll recover...

It only took another hour for him to blind out.
In between clicks I wrote an autohotkey script to click the raise button co-ordinates every 30 seconds.

I had it working in time for the last 3 clicks or so.

Cheers,

srry i caused so much trouble but tbh if i knew it put JB out that much I would have done it sooner.

btw i sent an email to Pokerstars about your script that played automatically and I am sure we (that is the other zommers) will be getting refunds due to you employing a bot. :f_cool:

ps. zommers = zimmers + zombies who said i cant do math. _grin:
pps. lol at prove you were hit by a nuke.
ppps. So I came 2nd in all 3 tournies. that how i roll even when i am not there.

I read his reply to this ? on 2+2 and he says it's merely that when he started writing the book a few years ago 3.5 was the standard open from early positions. He felt that when he completed the book that he could probably go back and make many amendments reflecting the way the game had changed (smaller 3 and 4 bets etc). However, he felt this wasn't practical (could be a never ending process) and actually a 3.5 and 3bb open don't vary significantly and we would open the same hands for 3 as 3.5bb and respond to a 3bb open the same as a 3.5bb open (all be it a 3 bet would be a little smaller)

p.s. I am back blogging!

Quite a few people have 2.5bb and 2bb standard opens now so the jump from 3.5 to 2.5 or lower should be significant enough since it definitely allows 5bet/folds in many cases. It's hard for a book started 3 years ago to be completely up to date with today's games but it focuses on theory, not practice which is almost always the same. I will give more input once I read more of it. :f_thumbsup:

I don't think it's very significant. I was without power for 2 weeks, so had the pleasure of going over the book in excruciating detail. :f_o:

I redid all the equations for more standard bet sizes, or at least the common sizes I use. I figured after doing that, that the sizes didn't really change a hell of a lot.

I think the biggest one was 4bets, 4bets with his sizes weren't as much of an overbet , so I need these to work a little more than his examples.

I did think of that, actually, and since there are no decisions made -- just clicked the button regardless -- it can hardly be called a bot.

I'm sure you would be happy to play vs my script any time -- especially since the click is based solely on time, and if the timing is off it clicks other random crap.

It is a shame about your connection, though.
Does this happen often?

I tilt easily enough as it is w/o having an on-again-off-again internet connection too.

Peace,

nah my internet is good. i use 3g with 10gb cap. had 15gb cap but the 5gb contract expired and did not bother to renew. this was the first time since then (march) that the 10gb was not enough and it was only because i downloaded all that chess stuff for tyrone.

about the script:
tbh it should not have been that hard. i know u used AHK and with that u could just do:
sleep(30000)
winactivate(tablename)
send(key)
and then setup the key in the pokerstars client.

Secondly i dont think PS would have big problem with it because i wrote and used a script to use key shortcuts (that was before we could set them in the client) to play zoom and rush and they never had a problem with it.

That is pretty much exactly it, except that I tried to do it w/ mouse clicks.
Keystroke is way better.

Another one I will do is create a hotkey for 2.5 bb preflop bet.

Hotkeys. So interesting.

Mrsjb booked a day out at Alton Towers for us yesterday. I'm ambivalent about these theme parks because, during the 29 seconds that you're whizzing around upside down, back to front and arse sideways, it's good fun, but I've usually forgotten about the ride two minutes later. I suspect there's just not enough intellectual content to keep me interested. I'm such a wanker.

I went on Oblivion, which is basically 10 seconds of plunging vertically into a big black pit, in which you're cooled down after your long journey by having a fine mist of cold water sprayed on you (why?). As I entered the hole and the mist, the only thought in my head was 'Shit. Legionnaire's disease. I'm going to die,' which, although I could be wrong, is probably not the response they were looking for. And this morning I have a cough, so hah! :f_mad:

My six year old daughter absolutely loved everything she was allowed to go on, and was very upset that she couldn't go on the rides for which she was 12cm too short. She's going to be trouble when she's older. :f_love:

I find myself more interested in poker maths than poker at the moment. I clearly view actually playing poker in the same way that I view visiting theme parks.

:f_biggrin: I'd really like to go to a theme parc with you. You should join us @ Prater in Vienna one day :f_love:
