Problems with HM2 on a remote desk with Windows Server 2008

When you say, "remote desk" do you mean that you are using the Terminal Services client "Remote Desktop Connection" to remotely control the server itself?

What version of PostgreSQL do you use?

What is the OS of the client you use to remote control the server?

Is your poker room running on the server too?

Does the server use the English Operating system, and do your poker rooms save the Hand Histories in English?

Are you running as an administrator, and are all your permissions correct?

Finally, why not just run HM2 on your own computer?

I have used "Remote Desktop Connection" to remote control my home computer (XP) and successfully played poker. Not recommended, but I can do it.

I have also succesfully played poker remotely using Teamviewr 6, 7 and 8, and also successfully with TightVNC. In each case HM2 and the poker room ran on my home computer. I have done this with PokerStars, William Hill and Poker 770.

There is too much that can go wrong for me to ever do this long term.
However, when we're over at my wife's sister's place and they get talking it is a life-saver!

No, I would NEVER do this from work !

The problem is Windows Server 2008. It handles some things different and my colleagues couldn't figure out any solution.

Thank you very much for your answer. I can not run HM2 on my own computer. The support guy says -at this post- server 2008 is not good on this... So I guess I need a new remote script with other server... I was using Swtech.ie remote script... Were you playing with HM2 in TightVNC?

TightVNC merely sends screen data from my Home PC to my laptop, and transmits my keyboard and mouse inputs back the other direction.

I don't think that this will help you, because Windows Server 2008 is the problem. My guess is that the Server OS is optimized from background functions, and not optimized for user applications. In the past this could be changed, but I'm not familiar w/ W2008, so I can't say.

There is another option to try.
Obtain a copy of VMWare Workstation. There is a trial version.
Install it on the server,
Create a virtual machine, and install Windows 7 on it.

Try to play poker on the virtual machine.

If it works, wonderful, otherwise just uninstall it all.
Performance will not be as good as if it was running on a physical machine, but it will work. Well, I expect it will -- I have also done this using VMWare Workstation 5.5 on an XP dual-processor machine.

Yes, without any problems as all other pokerclients except PKR.
I use Windows 7 as operating system for the virtual machine.

But i heard from my colleagues that you have only 1 GB of RAM on your Win 2008 server, i think a virtual machine will not run with this low amount of memory.

With everything a server has to do, and how its memory is optimized, I'm guessing that such a low amount of memory will be the primary reason that HM2 + poker client won't perform well.

When programs get memory-cramped, the operating system starts "paging" memory to disk. It takes the least-used pages of memory and saves them to a special file (or files).

The problem comes when even the least-used pages are used often enough that the OS has to retrieve them from disk.

In high-usage situations, you end up with disk thrashing, where the disk is in constant use, struggling to keep up.

My guess is that the W2008 server will run fine with 12Gb of ram in it.
At work, none of my servers have less than 4 -- but then, I don't play poker on 'em

I run HM2 on an 8-yr old XP box w/ 2 GB of ram, and if I try to host a sweat session w/ both Skype and Teamviewer running, I'm restricted to two tables.

You both are right. That´s what a HM2 support guy told me a day ago on a teamviewer. He thinks all my troubles come from that lack of RAM memory so I will try to fix it. What IP gets Virtualbox? Thank you very much.
