3 outs actually, remember that she's holding one of the aces herself (unless you counted the possible flush as one out or something).

To be fair, the gutshot appeared on the flop, after the money was already in the pot. But even preflop, you "only" had about a 70% chance of winning.

This is critical.

30% of the time you take JJ up against Ace-rag hands you will lose.

The problem comes when you lose your entire tournament as a result.

So this really is as much a mindset situation as a poker situation.

To succeed in poker, you need to learn to let these roll off you.

Have your read, "The Mental Game of Poker" by Jared Tendler?

It is full of techniques for helping you deal with stuff like this.

yeah @ragney: now that I understand what your misunderstanding was: ofcourse I know what a gutshot is I just didn't get what you meant at first because I thought "what is he talking about, we were all-in... why is he talking about gutshots when it's all laid out already?"

@harrier I meant it differently, I thought of it as "if not this but something different flopped except for an ace" - well then she'd have to hit the 7 twice and that'd be actually less than an out, so you're right

Yes, that is truly annoying.

The one I hate is when your straight hits on the river after villains flush hits on the turn.

Here's an exercise for you -- pick 4 random SnGs, and observe them.
Count how many times the losing hand on the turn becomes the winning hand on the river.

It will surprise you.

I did this when going through "The Mental Game of Poker".

Barry Greenstein wrote an entire book called "Ace on the River".
The title comes from just such a hand. The book is a good read for a poker player. It won't increase your winrate, but it is interesting nonetheless.
