I wasnt able to play last night as I couldnt log in to Titan, doh.
Managed to rope Bill and one of our employees, Craig, into playing the Building mag Poker tourny on 16th Oct at the Vic so looking forward to a good night. As usual, we will no doubt get down to London around lunch time, eat at a rather nice restaurant and hit the bars before kick off at 6.30.
Last year they had a very nice champagne and canape reception first so will look forward to that too. Life as a poker player is never dull!
Oh dear. My cash game career is not exactly going to plan!
I can see that I am simply not aggressive enough in certain situations. It is a leak in my game which was very kindly pointed out to me by Tribun when we played hu. I may raise pre flop aggressively, but too often I will give it up if I dont hit. I also call too much to raises when in the big blind.
I didnt notice it so much playing NL50 and NL100 but yesterday I stepped up the levels and got suitably punished.
To be honest, i am not getting the buzz from playing cash that I do from tournaments and for me, the buzz is as important as the money.
Hence, yesterday I decided that I'd had enough of playing NL100 as I found it boring, so I played NL400 instead.
What? I hear you cry, have you forgotten about BRM?
No I havent forgotten it, but I need to find a level that I am comfortable with, that I actually enjoy playing and obviously that I am good enough to beat.
Without bigging myself up, I am not poor and I do have the bankroll to play at the higher levels but as this is my first real venture into cash / ring games whatever you prefer to call them, I wanted to ease myself in at the lower levels. Problem is of course that I have a very low boredom threshold and, no disrespect here, I didnt get a thrill from sitting down with $100.
Jesus, I sound just like the sort of arrogant pricks I despise but I am trying to be honest with myself as well as anyone who might read this. Actually not exactly certain if anyone is reading this but hey what the hell I can still be honest with myself!
Anyway, the upshot of my little adventure yesterday is that I blew off $741 in 493 hands.
In my defence I should say that I got unlucky with $400 of it, but had I played more aggressively it wouldnt have happened. I will post the hand below but you can see that I flopped the nuts then got outdrawn after all the money was in. What cost me though was not reraising preflop.
I acually started pretty well building my $400 up to $650 in a rare afternoon session. The evening session though killed me. Its so easy to look back now and see what I should have done, but at the time I couldnt see it.
The rest of my losses came from exactly the same thing - playing too passively.
I need to re-evaluate where I am going with this because I am not sure that I can change my game enough to compete at the top level in cash games and if I cant compete then I wont play.
I know that in tournament play that I can do better than compete, I can beat the best and I am feared by people who play me on a regular basis. Unfortunately I cant say the same thing about cash games. If anything I am probably looked at as a cash cow!
I am going to give some serious thought to how I proceed. Do I go back to tournament play or do I carry on trying to improve my cash play. If I am going to persevere with the cash, then I need to find a level that gives me the enjoyment and the excitement that I need.

I'm sorry to hear that things ain't going too well for you at the minute geezer, either in your play or in your head (dont mean your mental ♦, just the indecision you're going through).
Do your play with the BSS. The only reason i ask is that it may help you with being more aggressive when the spot is right.

My head hurts. I have played near perfect poker today so how come I am $267 down? This cash poker is just too hard lol.
I played a beautiful set up on a guy who kept raising from early position. 3 times I reraised him and got him to put it down. Then, he does it again raising from UTG and I reraise him 3.5 times his raise only this time he has had enough and pushes. Oh dear, just what I wanted cuz I am sitting with pocket Kings. Thankyou very much! Apart from when he flips over his A 10 off suit and of course hits 2 pairs on the flop.
I suppose I cant moan about it because I laid the trap, led him straight into it and got all the money in as a big favourite.
I think I need a break from cash after only a week lol. I am going to play a few stts and mtts. No doubt my new found cash strategy will totally fk up my tournament play, but we shall see.
Took the weekend off from poker as I felt like I needed a break.
I am going to get back on track today, I have a feeling that today is going to be a good day.
I don't think cash games can f*** up your tournament play if you're playing your A-game. And for most of this hands it's just variance. You'll have upswing soon enough, just don't tilt and lose money because of playing bad(thats what we're all familiar with ;))
Stepped back down to NL100 today. The lure of the higher limits is pretty irrisistable but I have be realistic. The chances are that as I am learning this cash game, it is likely that I will face a considerable swing. Playing at the lower stakes, whilst limiting my potential winnings should mimimise my losses.
Anyway, had a nice profitable session, played 341 hands, mostly single tabling but sometimes playing two, for a total profit of $127.
I was down about $50 this afternoon after a dodgy session so turning that around tonight is positive.
Most of the profit came from one hand.
To set the scene so to speak, I had made a couple of standard raises from late position with good holdings, AK and QKs, and had been re-raised by the player to my immediate left on both occasions. Each time I called the raise and then check folded when I missed the flop and he bet out.
I can only assume that he thought that he could intimidate me into folding, but there was no way I was going to fold top two to this guy. Possibly I could have folded to a much tighter player, but on this occasion I was happy to get the money in.

Ouch. Took a horrible beat after playing really well tonight. I had a good read on a guy who had been raising and reraising with any two and then slow playing good made hands, so was pretty confident when I he re-raised my initial pot raise with AJsuited. I decided to just call in case, as in some previous hands he had called a re-reraise and got lucky on the flop.
Flop came J72 rainbow. He bet out two thirds of the pot and I raised just over min raise and he immediately pushed. I thought for a while and was absolutely sure I was ahead so called. Sure enough he shows 79. Great read by me. Turn 7, bastard.
Probably should have raised more on the flop but I wanted him to play and knew a min raise would induce the push so once again I got caught in my own trap.
I have been away for a few days with the family at centre parcs so no poker. Back tonight so will update once I have played again
OK I am relly not sure about continuing the cash game plan. I am having very mixed results, up $200 one day, down $200 the next.
I can deal with that but the real issue is that I am not enjoying it as much as the tournament play.
Had a nice multi table result last week. Played a $5 freezeout, something like 1200 players and came 2nd for $735. Should really have won as I went into the HU as a 2-1 chip leader but ran my pocket tens into jacks to double him up then had my pocket fours outdrawn by KJ to finish me off. However I was pleased with the 2nd place.
I am going to take a break from cash for a while and see how I can develop my mtt and stt play to see if it possible to make a decent income from it.
For anyone who has been reading this blog, you will know that I played the Building Charity tourny last week at the Vic. Didnt do so well in that. Made the final table but was card dead against a bunch of players who were calling all ins left right and centre so ended up in 7th. It was good fun though and managed to do a bit of business along the way, so all is not lost.
Played some NL£100 cash after and managed to get AA outdrawn by KJ despite me reraising £25 to an original UTG raise of £6, only for BB to call off a stack of his chips so he could see a flop, then call my push on a jack high board.
I am going to stop this blog also as I think it is getting boring for you readers now. I will start a knew one when I have something interesting to blog about.
