BB is very active after only 11 hands has played most of them aggressively. no reads, just feeling that he's aggressive and loose + good hands.

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $3.94 (39.4 bb)
BB: $8.15 (81.5 bb)
UTG: $10 (100 bb)
MP: $16.03 (160.3 bb)
CO: $28.69 (286.9 bb)
Hero (BTN): $12.59 (125.9 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with A Q
3 folds, Hero raises to $0.20, SB calls $0.15, BB raises to $0.80, Hero calls $0.60, SB calls $0.60

Flop: ($2.40) 9 6 A (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $2.30, SB folds, BB raises to $7.35 and is all-in, Hero calls $5.05

Hey gavin.

If he is loose and aggro u def need to stack off here with Tp2K. I dont get why u are potting the flop though - u seem to be overly worried about protection.

Just bet halfpot, u can easily get all the money in on the river if u want to fire 3 streets

against this player, if I bet smaller, I expect to get raised and 3/bet? or do I just call and get it in on ANY turn??

there are many turn cards that will improve his perceived range and he could bink two pair or even a set. if they are calling pot size bets why not do it for value?

I would bet and continue against a raise. Against a larger raise i would probably just rejam and against asmaller raise i might call.

Halfpot is going to be the standard size that i would use here. Instead of asking "why halfpot?" You should be asking yourself whether u have any reason to deviate from a more standard bet size.

Smaller bets give u a better risk/reward on your bluffs
And if u are betting for value, you shouldnt have any problems betting 3 streets for value and getting all the money in by the river

You also need to think about how to play your range and not just your hand. Do u see any potential problems with your current strategy of potting with tptk on the flop and betting smaller with bluffs or weaker hands?

Its often a good idea to have only 1 betsize onthe flop to avoid giving away the strengh of your hand so early. I guess u can use multiple sizings on later streets

I do agree, and I do see the potential problem of being unbalanced with betting. I reason that at these limits do these players even pay attention before you stack them and they leave the table forever?

If you can bet 100% more than standard, and the player still calls why not take the value. I also think really bad players are more prone to level themselves thinking a big bet is weak. I get more folds from smaller bets and 2nd barreling so I tend to do that more with draws weak made hands and junk, and bet polarized on the flop. I guess it's a style I've found working that is probably wrong for other limits/players.

don't smaller bets also give you less fold equity vs. showdown monkeys? wouldn't bluffing with larger bets make more sense and balance with big hands? make semi-bluff and weak made hand bluffs smaller.

TL;DR I agree, but think it's player dependent. thanks for the discussion :) villain had KK no hearts.

Basically my point is that i dont see too much upside with potting on the flop as compared to betting smaller.

To give u an extreme example, do u think jamming all-in right away or betting small for 3 streets is better? Its essentially the same concept and according to game theory, the smaller sizes on 3 streets maximizes your ev with your entire range

It might be a bit too complicated for someone playing at the micros still but you might want to check out the concept of Geometric growth betting (you can google it and try to read some threads on 2p2, or better still, check out the mathematics of poker).

Also, I think people tend to use the excuse of "Oh I'm playing micros so I should completely ignore other more complex concepts that might be useful in my own learning and development as a player" and you should definitely avoid falling into this trap.

Also, from an exploitative standpoint, my guess is that you should be able to get more money into the pot on average by using smaller bet sizes spread out over 3 streets as opposed to two.

It's more of a psychological thing, people will gladly call 2 streets of halfpot bets, and when they are faced with another river half pot bet, they go "sighhh I'm committed" and call anyway.

Compare this to when your opponent just faces a huge Turn bet and is put in a tougher spot where he might be much likelier to fold a medium strength hand.

Of course I can't prove it, but at least I found myself, as well as my micro-stakes opponents in the past, being affected by such a thought process.
