underwater rugbywtf
Yeah, it's a pretty obscure sport to say the least. It doesn't even have that much in common with regular rugby.
It is played in a deep pool (about 4-5 metres, our team just rented a local diving pool) with two metal baskets, which are installed on the bottom of the pool, on either side. The goal of the game is to put a small non-buoyant ball in the opposing team's basket. While it is technically allowed to throw the ball in the basket like in a game of basketball, underwater throws tend to be slow and inaccurate, so it is typically safer to swim directly to the basket and put it in yourself.
The game is played entirely underwater and players are only allowed to surface to catch some air. They can use their entire body (full contact) to stop the opposition, but they are only allowed to engage with the player who has possession of the ball, and they have to immediately let go once their opponent drops it, so they won't drown each other.
There isn't even a rule preventing any player from blocking the basket by sitting on it, since they would have to surface sooner or later anyway, and the attacking team could just pass the ball around in the meantime, waiting for him to leave.
Needless to say, it's not much of a spectator sport, unless it is played in a giant aquarium or something.
