Coaching For Profits @ BPC
Day 51 (25 @ HU)

Kinda average session! Lost some time (kids stayed up late!) which is ok as can catch up during my "poker/pc rest" period but its not ideal. Ran bad (but not bothered about that one little bit just nice to see how I handle it etc). But other than that it was ANOTHER FANTASTIC DAY OF LEARNING!!!!

I noticed in the forums that I have gone from 25 days ago saying "Oh my god you cannot call that you must fold" and "OMG you cannot bet there they will only call better" and now I changed into "Call you nit!" and "You must value bet thinner here" !!!! What the hell has happened to me!!! Anyway, its good, just got to keep an eye on things.... Coach - where the hell are ya!!!??? (Actually I am getting worried about him, thought he be back by now - just hope he having fun...)

Graph for day...

Was just one of those sessions where I was value betting hard against fish and it went four-flush and they had it (and I did not :) ) or they just had a ridiculous hand and hit something. It does not tilt me one bit though. It is just great to see how bad people are and from what Oskar shows me these people exist at much higher stakes too :) :) :)

This is sort of thing I mean.... This is not a whine!!!!

Hey dude, I've been following your blog and have been waiting for you to reach the 50-day mark to make a comment. By coincidence you happen to comment about the burn-out concern I had for you in the same post. If you remember when you started I said the following:

168 hours in a week and you plan for work and poker to take up 105 of those. I assume sleep at around 45 hours minimum leaving you about 18 hours a week for EVERYTHING else that needs to get done. Do you have any days off planned to give yourself a break so you don't burn out?
I'm not saying you can't do it, just that it is a crazy commitment for you and your family. Good Luck and hope it works out for you.

That was before I knew you were planning a 24-hour poker free day (which is a great and necessary idea), but that also means that those 6 days are even crazier than I imagined.
I just wanted to say that I am truly impressed with how well you've been able to commit to this. Not just you, but your family as well - I hope you realize and appreciate how rare a thing that level of sacrifice and support is. I'm sure you do.
Hopefully you take this in the spirit it is intended - as someone on the outside recognizing your hard work and dedication. (and maybe a bit of extra motivation to keep going when it gets tough :) ).
Best wishes and I'll keep following your journey.

Thanks for following amigo. I really appreciate everything you said there, both this time and the previous time.

I spent a lot of time with my wife before I started CFP talking about what the possible pros and cons of the whole thing would be. Although I would have been totally devastated to miss this opportunity (I am long standing Gordon fanboy) I also realised that there is no way on earth I could have done it without her 100% support.

Yeah as it happens the kids don't notice a lot. I play as soon as they go to bed each night (I love putting them to bed) so 6 x 5.5 = 33 hours of my 35 target per week are played when they don't even notice. Then I get 4 hours in on a Saturday either when my daughter is out at dance or (if I have had to work that Saturday) then I have to ask them to give me 4 hours peace and quiet.

As an aside I have got a massive noticeboard above my PC with pictures of all the fantastic things we will be able to do once I am successful at poker and making the sort of money that will give us a better life (in 12 months time ;) ) my favourite being the picture of their school as I really would love to take them to school and pick them up and their favourite seems to be Disney World (go figure).

Anyways, thx again and thx for following.

Day 53 (27 @ HU)

So... Started the week off with session where I thought I will give 2 tables of NL4 a try. Got my bottom spanked a bit but felt like I really ran bad card distribution wise. Need to review the session before I can say that I strayed away from A-game lots or just a little (got to lose it a bit right?) but I did not feel too bad. I guess I would have auto-piloted a lot of spots where I should be picking up small pots. Will look into it. Overall was happy with it though (not results wise ;) ).

Done lots of forum work and studied some HH's. Just got to keep doing these things and working my ass off and all is gonna be cushty!

Graph for day...

Yuk! No worries though, think these runs are pretty standard. I haven't got any immediate issues about my play, just got to keep pushing :)

Fantastic day!! Managed to book a winning session after an 11 bi downswing (less RB ;) ). Focussed really well and think my adjustments were good. Won a couple of flips too which helps the confidence.

Forum work was excellent, really getting it into a habit now so it does not feel like such a chore! My Excel sheet is now getting a really good sample of hands on a wide variety of topics.

Pretty tired today. Kids taking too long to put to bed :(. Had to grind until 0100 hours this morning and getting up at 0640 was tougher than usual. I think I am missing my morning work out and also my brain is being taxed to the max all day now. It is really addictive though for some reason!?

Graph for day...

Some of these guys are mad aggressive! Having to make adjustments (not sure if good ones ;) ) and be really patient.

Woowoooooooo!! NL50 comin at ya!!!!!

Had a coaching session with Ilidek last night - what can I say but "freaking awesome". Really good session, learned heaps and cannot wait to review it (was sweat session so probs missed tonnes of info ;) ).

Ilidek says I am solid enough to take a shot so I played a few hours last night. Was not so easy to get action as at NL4 so will find another site to add to ipoker.

Ended up down around 0.5 BI but think I played ok. Was a bit too excited to play maybe.Other problem was I slept really badly! Think I was full of adrenaline! Maybe 4.5 hours which is not enough at the moment because of work load. Need to watch this or will explode! On the other hand cannot wait to play tonight. Just need to settle down and focus.

Yesterday...

Run goooooood!! Actually just pure skills of course ;) ;) ;)

Really happy I got a good start at NL50. I was very nervous for this session as its a big jump from NL4 to NL50. I lost a few small hands to start with but just kept my cool and kept to solid play like I have been taught. I think I made a fold in a spot I considered close whereas at NL4 I think I would have called. Something to watch in future as need to try to make highest EV play. However I think avoiding some variance is not too bad when taking shots.

Forum work is just awesome, I am learning so much its just incredible.

Pants!

On one hand I am actually ok with the session result. On the other hand I am not happy with my professionalism.

I played one villain for around 3 hours last night and I should not have. He won around 1.25 buy-ins against me and was sun running (fortunately only in small pots). I believe I am better player than him but I think I should have left the table and found a better villain to play against. When I looked at the cashier of course I had lost much more than I thought due to rake (I was looking at his stack instead of actual loss). No need for this when taking shot, I should work on table selection.

Other tables were much better and was up overall versus other villains so other than being stupid it was a good day. Had action all the time too which was good.

Yesterday...

  • Play 5.5 hours - DONE 5.75!

  • Comment on ALL mates hands - DONE 17!

  • Comment on ALL mates hands
  • Review coaching session and make extensive notes
  • Play 100% solid

I'm not a cash game player (9-max STT SnG), so take my comments for what they are... trash!

Pre Flop: (pot: €0.75) Hero has 6♦ 8♦
I should have bet/folded the river here.

I think the river check-call is fine. I don't think he has the Full-house here often enough and your trips are beating a lot of hands that he would bet out on after you check the river (i.e. a lot of Ax hands, overpairs, pairs, and even some missed straights)

Pre Flop: (pot: €0.75) Hero has 5♥ 6♥
WP imo!

Agreed!

Pre Flop: (pot: €0.75) Hero has J♠ J♣
Think this is ok???

I think so too. A couple of questions though:
1) Had he flat-called your turn bet, what was your plan for river if he checked / if he bet-out?
2) What about checking the turn to keep pot low and then calling a river bet?

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.75) Hero has J♠ 9♠
WP imo!

I think this hand is biggest difference between Cash and SnG... With a nice flush draw I think I'm just calling the flop. I don't want to build too big a pot with nothing really.
I'm curious - if you had the King here would you have played hand any different?

Pre Flop: (pot: €0.75) Hero has T♦ A♦
Think standard?

Agreed.

Day 32

Agh!! It is not a "good" day.

Hit stop loss at NL50 (posted hands above). I think I played well and ran not too good. Ilidek has looked at hands and couple of things to look at but they would not have saved me any money except for one close fold.

Coach gave me permission to play NL4 so i can continue to practice. Really grateful for that as have no hours to spare!

I have not completed all the tasks I set myself for today (first red marks on my to-do list so far :( ). I am mentally drained today and need to stop. I played 8.5 hours, made my Youtube video (takes quite some time) and did some study and as I just started to post my own hands I realised I cannot do it as I cannot focus. This means I need to do them tomorrow which is not the end of the world as it was supposed to be my 24 hour rest period. I will do this early in the morning and get it out of the way so can enjoy some family time.

So today is quite a mental test for me. I am drained, I lost at NL50 and my rest period is gone. Hopefully this will make me stronger....

Yesterday...

  • Play 8 hours - DONE 8.5!
  • Post hands - FAIL!!!!!!!!!!
  • Make video for Youtube (1 month gone at HU!) - DONE!!
  • Comment on ALL mates hands - DONE 10.
  • Review coaching session and make extensive notes - DONE 60%
  • Play 100% solid - THINK SO!
  • Play 1 table - YES AT NL50
  • Take time and focus on the table - YES!
  • Be professional/realistic about villain selection - 7/10

Actually I made a mistake on my hours. I could have played 1.25 hours less and got other things done instead - won't make that mistake again.

And on a brighter note, here is today's Youtube video...

(Obviously made before today's results came in :( )

Hey, these days are sent to test us, to help us become better by realising where we are weak, there will be more of these and they will be a whole lot worse - I am ready.

Good luck everybody - KEEP MOVING FORWARD!!!

Edit: Hey Ramble!! Thx for replies - will look at ehan I catch up on my tasks - TYVM!!

Day 34

Better day! Ran better at the tables (although start was worrying!) and was up a buy-in within first 100 hands. That really helped after stop-loss day but I was playing solid anyway I feel.

Did some great homework (on my supposed rest period). Analysed a friend's hand in Equilab and learned a lot there. Also it was good for me to try this as I have not done much of this before and need to get better at it. Sent it to coach for inspection so I can improve the process for future. Caught up with all other tasks (review of coaching/post hands/comment on hands) so I am ready to hit this week running...

Pokertracker or iPoker has some glitch. I tilted a guy and won a buy-in off him leaving him with 10bb, I had AT next hand and open jammed (hoping for tilt call, prob should let him shove tbh) he called and I held (v T9) but PT4 shows I won $100ish there instead of $10. Makes graph look nice but its wrong so pointless.

Last week...
Played 36.25hrs :)

Day 35

Woo! What a day!!

Did two HH analyses using Equilab and Flopzilla today. Have not used them much in the past so a lot of time is spent navigating different options and stuff but wow I did not realise just how much you can do with these tools. Was hard work for me but I will get quicker with this and it looks to have MASSIVE benefits for my learning curve (well played coach). Went through 15 old hand histories @ forum too just trying to improve overall thought process.

At the tables was also good. One villain owned me a bit, I thought he was gonna be huge fish but either he ran good or was just out playing me a lot - seemed to be the latter in the end so I left and found more passive guy ;) gotta look after my cheeseburger money :).

I have slight troubles with table selection. I think its really important for me to try not to battle with really aggressive and good players to protect my bank roll for a while. At NL4 I was playing anyone and a lot of them were really aggressive (don't care about €4 I guess) and I kinda got used to trying to adjust to them. I need to break that habit and force myself to be more selective. I mean, I am doing ok at it but just need to sit-out a bit quicker sometimes. Any advice amigos?

Day 36

Goooooood day :)

Lots of work on hand evaluation. Takes me a long time to do this work at the moment and its very likely I am making a lot of mistakes on my range assumptions (yh ok Captain Obvious). Hopefully though by breaking hands down like this Ilidek can spot lots of errors and we can see areas that need the most work on. I kinda forgot how much I like maths too but its hurting this old man's brain getting back into it ;)

Session was really good. Variance around even. Villain selection good (got an "are you scared" in chat when I sat out rofl... "yes, you are winning all my cheeseburger money, bye!"). Think I played really solid. Focus excellent. Just need to improve my strategy skills but that's covered ;).

I think its the process that's important as much as and often more than the result. So once you're in the process guess what!? You're already achieving and you're already successful!!! Man, that was easy!!! And furthermore, its quite addictive. Wow I feel good today" - yh me again :)

Hi! I made quite a few changes to my lifestyle and my sleep patterns. It's a bit too much to put in a short post and do it justice. I am thinking about making a Youtube video about it within the next few weeks so stay tuned!!

Day 37

Another good day at the poker office :).

Focus excellent, villain selection very good, played solid except for one loose call and study was great.

Kinda wasted some time analysing one hand that coach said was an easy decision that did not need analysing. On the good side I did not even realise that and also it was good practice. Felt pretty stupid not knowing that and yh I should know basic stuff like that but its fine to see weaknesses (the mistake is not working on them). I think its mostly a problem of in the past always being focussed on studying the wrong things ("where does your money come from?"). I think this is a big problem for aspiring poker players.

Today I will do some more work with Equilab and hope coach spots more areas I am totally stupid at :)

Pesky son was at it again this morning. I have to get the taser gun on him ;).

Bring it on baby!! High stakes I am coming at ya!!!!!! ;)

I feel sorry for the people who are born brilliant. You know, the naturally gifted ones. I mean, how are the poor devils supposed to grow? For us mere mortals growth is easy - just little baby steps, every single day. Cosmic. (Me rambling again ;) )

Day 38

:) :) :)

It's going toooo well!

Made another hand analysis using Equilab and its Scenario Analyser today. Not used this before but it seems pretty awesome for looking at how different cards affect our decisions etc. Pretty tough on the old brain but gonna keep doing this until it all gets easier and habitual to me.

Two table sessions 5.5 hours and 1.75 hours (pre dentist visit ;) ) and ran quite nicely thank you very much!

Villain selection was best ever, focus was excellent and played solid to my ability.

What do you think of this hand...

$0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
2 Players
Hand Conversion Powered by weaktight.com

Stacks:
Eatyourpeas (SB) ($50.86) 102bb
BB ($39.87) 80bb

Pre-Flop: ($0.75, 2 players) Eatyourpeas is SB 7♠ 6♦
Eatyourpeas raises to $1, BB calls $0.50

Flop: 3♦ 4♥ 5♣ ($2, 2 players)
BB bets $0.50, Eatyourpeas raises to $2.68, BB calls $2.18

Turn: 7♣ ($7.36, 2 players)
BB bets $3.50, Eatyourpeas raises to $14.02, BB raises to $24.54, Eatyourpeas ???

Seems standard to me.

Roll Update.
Session = +$104
Roll = $1970
Overall profit/loss = +$42

Nice to be back in plus numbers :). Kind of irrelevant at the moment though, just gotta keep working on my game and getting better at study. Fortunately I am in the perfect place. I thank my lucky stars!!!!!!!

Today I've got a little "trick" for you that made a big change to my way of thinking about life around ten years ago... If you are one of those people who when you see someone more fortunate than yourself you automatically think something bad of them (I dunno, you see a 20 year old with a nice car and your first thought is "that's dad's car" or something). Do whatever you can to switch your way of thinking. Try thinking something good like "wow that kid's done well being able to afford a car like that already, I bet he has worked really hard". You see, the reason you thought a bad thing is because you hate to feel mediocre so you need to drag people back to you. However if you think something good of them you got a chance of pulling yourself up to them!
It's gonna be tough for some of you (I catch myself out still ;) ) but I assure you that once you start thinking of people in a positive light you are far more likely to take a positive track yourself.
Now get out there and rock it!!!
(Blimey I do ramble on eh!?)
