2014: A Review
2014 was a year that I have to classify as a success. And I start out by saying that money-wise it was not a lot better than 2013 (at least pre-rakeback). But that should not be our sucess-meter, even for bigger samples.
Okay, let's go step by step.
Am I a better player technically than I was 12 months ago? Yes, a lot lot better. The improvement was huge, pretty much thanks to private coachings (capitalized very well by me) with Uri Peleg and more recently with Paul "Internet" Otto.
Am I a better player, psychologically, than I was 12 months ago? The gap is probably even bigger than it is for the skill. I was a Mental Game fish, thanks to the awesome help from my friend "Nhoca" I am a lot more solid, and as a result I'm being able to put up more volume and, most of all, suffer less with Poker. I think I'm happier person because of it.
Foi este ano também que comecei a fazer vídeos/coachings/avaliação de mãos para a PokerStrategy English, um marco importante.
It was also the year that I began making videos/hand evals/coachings for PokerStrategy English, an important landmark. I also became the main and only NL coach for Strategy Portugal/Brasil.
The private coachings also went well and several students bought more session, which is a great sign. The multi-nationality was also pretty cool, from Ireland to South Africa.
I made SuperNova for the first time, although a "mandatory" goal for a 200NL reg, it's still a landmark.
I started out the year trying to stabilize at 200NLz (at the time I had only played 10k hands there). 12 months and 250k hands later I can consider myself properly stabilized. I manage to get enough confidence and bankroll to take a shot at 500NLz that did not went well. Looking back I think I did not have enough skill to do that, but since there was BR and drive, and cannot consider that a mistake. Also, it's very very important to try to grasp the variance factor. At this moment I could either be saying that I was still trying to take shots at 200NL or I could be saying that 500NL went awesome and I was planning to take shots at 1k. Things are the way they are, and accepting reality as it is is fundamental if we want to be successful players.
Negative things of 2014, although the first half of the year was very good results-wise, I have to say that I was not good. Mental coaches only began in July and until then my mindset was very bad. Low volume, a lot of fear, anxiety... If the results had been bad things could have fallen apart badly. E in that sense it was very fortunate, when variance caught to me, I was ready for it.
Plans 2015
First and foremost, no backsliding regarding attitude. Keep focus on improving and giving my best at the table with the a decent volume. If I can do that it's already awesome.
I plan to keep working with PokerStrategy, EN and PT/BR.
More defined goals:
1) shots at 500NL, hopefully they stick.
2) SuperNova x2, try to make around 20k VPPs per month
3) Keep actively working on my Mental Game, with Nhoca's help (google document's rock)
4) Keep actively working on my game, with the help of the great Paul "Internet" Otto
Conclusion
2014 was an excelent year, in a lot a ways and not only Poker. I know where I am, where I am going and how to get there. It's just a matter of walking the distance. Let's do it?
