As the leaderboard is concerned, it would be alot better and more fair if the words would be counted, not posts. There are people, like MJPerry, for example, which sometimes write an essay about the hand, but it still counts the same as mine - "I think it's well played". I believe it would be very hard to implement, though. Maybe it would also be nice to restrict the amount of money one can receive in a year to, let's say, 150$. With the current system it is theoretically possible and profitable to spam.

It's definitely a quality over quantity thing. One person might write an essay, whereas another says "raise the turn because of XYZ" in one sentence. If the former is more helpful, that's better. I might write 500 words about a hand but if I'm spewing bullshit then it shouldn't count as better than a shorter, correct post.

I agree that it's profitable to spam, which shouldn't be the case.

Best idea: everyone who wants in on this leaderboard opts in. At the end of each month, people anonymously vote for who they think made the best contribution to the Hand Discussion forums; if you don't vote then any votes for you don't count and obv you can't vote for yourself. Let's say you have to have made 30+ posts to be considered, so we can still encourage discussion on a regular basis.

I would have great difficulty deciding who to vote for if I need to assess each person's contribution over a whole month (and probably a few hundred posts). What would be good is if people actually bothered to use the up and down vote buttons on comments, then the winner could just be the person with the highest net up votes at the end of the month.

Any way, it doesn't really matter, I doubt anyone much cares about $50.

Counting the total thumbs ups for comments would actually be a great idea.

counting ups and downs would be better than counting just ups I guess.
But nice promotion :)

And the one with most friends that blindly vote for him will win.
:)

Yeah, it would obv have to be the total sum of ups and downs.

I doubt that will be an issue. There is no doubt that some of the members are more popular than others and might be likely to get a few more votes, but it should be easy to detect if people are cheating. If someone writes something like "top of our range. have to call!" in every post and get votes from the same person you can be pretty sure something is going on, however if someone is writing a long detailed post about the hand and get votes by the same person it's most likely because that feedback is more useful than the first example.

I think people should be encouraged to spend more time in equilab in order to write useful comments. Or if people just have very good reasoning for something it should be rewarded rather than just the amount of posts made which is also very easy to cheat on.

He guys,

I see you are also concerned about having an impact by improving our discussions - be it from quality or quantity side.
Obviously it is easy to judge by the pure numbers, while judging the quality is more difficult. I've been myself taking part in a few selected discussions and see how making quality posts can make a difference. Definitively when posts are not super far away from each other I am looking into the details to decide for the prizes. Hence also last month 2x third prices. Based on the discussion here i will put a stronger focus on Quality in the future - however as quality is not quantifiable, I won't be able to give you exact criteria here (counting words is imho not the right way).

Thx,SvenBe

It is december time - preparation for christmas is running, so: let us celebrate the best discussions of the month!

Your prizes as usual:
nitrol: $50 in your Tell-a-Friend account + feel free to use the below picture as your Avatar for the forum
la55i: Status upgrade + 2 for one month + feel free to use the below picture as your Avatar for the forum
YohanN7: Status upgrade + 1 for one month + feel free to use the below picture as your Avatar for the forum

Thanks all you guys for being helpful around here!
You guys asked me to give you some hints on why we select this & that guy on a certain spot, beyond just the number of posts.

We again have this month the same situation, but I am pretty sure you will agree with the ranking:

• Nitrol: For sure, nitrol is most of the times no fan of big words. However, often this is not necessary - simply state the obvious, ask the right questions and let the user who posted the question find the answer himself. Have a look at https://forums.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=357731 - why sometimes have long posts when in that case the advise is simple: raise your top set & go broke. Well done & keep on helping !

• la55i: He posts occassionally his own hands, but also loves to discuss with others. Let's have a look at https://forums.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=355695 where we inspect 3bet-ranges SB vs BU, specifically what type of Aces we can 3bet here. Do you agree with the analysis?

• YohanN7: He is -in his own words- blunt. Saying what is the matter, looking at both small and big mistakes. You can see an example here: https://forums.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=2180547#post2180547

An honorable mentioning goes to Mr. MJPerry for stiring up the discussions with funny remarks: https://forums.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=2193847#post2193847

CU guys next month!

The best solution is to scrap this whole concept. It will also save PS $150ish a month.

We would be very happy if you did. :] You don't need to opt-in, just give the best advice you can and hopefully you'll finish top 3. :gl:

Woo another person spamming the threads rather than making thoughtful posts.

I think we could soften this system by taking top 5 and rewarding 3 of them by random or something like that. It would make the system more fair. It wouldn't encourage someone to make useless one line comments that raises a lot of questions so you have to post 3 or 4 times per thread and your opinion is still not clear to anyone. One can use quote button several times per post and there is edit button so you don't have to post again..

I think this month I have reviewed almost all of the hands in NL hand discussion forum. It is almost 160 hands I guess. I can not reach over 300 posts with out spamming. What do I have to do to win that 50$ sometimes if reviewing every single hand is not enough? Start making deliberate typos and instead of correcting them with edit button I make a new post?:f_rolleyes:

PS. I still like that we are rewarded. It is the only way I can get status upgrades since I decided to play at Stars at least for a while and my Stars account is not tracked.

The thing is, spamming for $50 is not +EV. I won it the first month by properly posting and the improvements in my game were worth way more than $50, it was just too much effort to do over and also felt like a dick move to me to even try and win it again so I didn't.

Anyone 'cheating' the system is really only cheating themselves. Those people complaining that they post real answers should be aware that they are making money every time they think critically about a hand.

I agree with metza. The fact u are looking for the hands, analysing them, makes it worth itself. I ll compete to win just january, for personal purposes, and let it go latter as I ll be busy w other stuff.

Attention guys in charge:

Just in case I'm under consideration for a status upgrade for January (I've been posting lots of rubbish as usual): I don't really need an upgrade, and wouldn't "use" it anyway. I am posting because I like to think about poker, perhaps even more than I like playing. Someone else might both really want one and deserve an upgrade.
