Isn't there a free 'lite' version of Jivaro for Stars? Or is it just a time-limited trial?

You can use free trials of HUDs like PT or HM.
What about free software - APD Poker equity calculator is a good one. It automatically generate hand ranges for you.

You can try the trail version of HM2 or PT4
go one month each to test it out, then if you find that you like it , then go for it.
If you decide that it's to expensive for you, its OK you didn't pay for anything yet.

I have a different question about HUDs.
How can we correctly read the stats during a hand?
On what should we pay more attention during the game?

Depends on a lot of things. Normally - and specially if you are new to the game - you should pay most attention to VPIP and PFR. But it depends on the situation.

HUD is very useful! You can "see" your opponents.
