For Hand 1 above I feel like you could at least call that river bet. His initial limp could imply he has an A with low kicker or worst case scenario suited connectors of hearts. I think you played the hand correctly though but I do think you could have made the call.

Hand 2 is a little more complicated. I think you have a lot of his hands beat since he seems to be a fish. Best case: he is holding QQ, JJ, TT, or on a flush draw. Worst case he hit his set or two paired with his Ax but that is putting a lot of respect on his weak 3-bet. You have position here as well so I don't mind calling his bet OTT or potentially 3-betting him then re-evaluating the river. All-in-all I think this hand was also played alright.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks zolaman, much appreciated :f_thumbsup:

At the micro stakes I am very nitty since people would mostly pot-bet with the nuts and indeed bet lower with less of a hand. Not sure how I should adapt to these but perhaps I can call off half-pot bets.

Anyway, thanks for following my blog :f_thumbsup:

Cheers,

Holy sh*t :f_biggrin: I like this graph :) Next to the coaching (which I believe is the fundamental increase in any case) with Vonki, I think the Mental Game is doing good things to me :)

The huge jump in the middle is because of this hand :f_biggrin:

Coaching and Literature

Coaching is going extremely well. I have been working on my game with regards to Squeezing and Isolating and I choose my spots better and better. Last week I was a lot against fish in which also many aggressive ones. I feel I got this one more and more under control, although I still have those rolling eyes when I see someone raising in the most impossible spots :f_rolleyes:
There is a lot more to learn, however, I have the feeling that I know NL2 well and can win profitably here. I have to work my way up to $150 to go to 5NL. It's not a master piece but it's a start :) At least I know what I really want from poker, which I think it's important here.

The Mental Game of Poker has given me so much insights as well. I had to do many reflections during my Bachelors. However, these were mere reflection of how you felt towards a situation (mostly something in business). This book gives me insight of how I feel towards my situation and my feeling. I have updated Dropbox and organized it a bit better. Last week's assignment is about my fears. I know I am not one of the toughest guys and I know my flaws in secureness. However, I never thought I had so many :f_confused: These are my fears (in spoiler):

Spoiler

- Big pots
- Don’t trust my guts
- Not able to beat fish at micros
- Think in too many scenarios
- Second guessing principle
- Negative future principle
- Not able to make my own decisions one day
- Neglecting recent literature one day
- Being provoked while not knowing
- Getting a warm body

In the end, I can break this mostly down into a 'confident and fear of failure' problem.
What are yours? ;)

Well, that's it for now guys! :f_thumbsup: Thank you all for reading my blog and hope you still enjoy it. We still have some time before my Masters start. However, I think the challenge will not stop there. I may be very occupied with my Masters. However, as I know now that I won't stay working for an employer. I surely flirt with the idea to make my own decisions later on because that is all what poker players do; making decisions. And if you are doing your job alright, you are making the right decisions.

Hey man, I am back. :f_drink:

I haven't read it yet, but from what I see you posting here, this book must be really good to have your thoughts organized and stuff, will sure try to take a look at it later.

Regarding your fears, I believe they are completely normal and I have a bunch of them as well. What I am coming to understand tough, is that, the more I play and the more I see that variance is real and we can judge a play only for that specific situation. We have to always try to have a broad look to make the best decision. Hang in there and I believe you will get what I'm talking about.

Hand 1: I believe it is a fold pre-flop. I am not much of a expert at cash games but I believe that after a re-raise and a call, your hand is in really bad shape and SB seems much agressive, probably wouldn't fold very much here.

Hand 2: For sure I believe that the raise pre-flop is a good strategy, you could be getting called with KQ or AJ and worse and be dominating your opponent. Multi-way pots diminish your probability of having the best hand a lot.
As played, I would tend to re-raise OTF, there's the flush draw there and you don't have any blocker. I would just like to take the hand right away

BTW, I started my blog about STT, take a look there if you have time and interest (:

GL and stay grinding

Yo dude! :welcome:

How's it going? I will follow your blog man :f_thumbsup: You only need to change your signature a bit (the url is still given).

Yes, the MGoP is really really helpful indeed :) I just finished the book and have on the first 2 pages basically a Master summary (which you can find on my Dropbox) under 'Version 6'. My flaws, fears, strengths and weaknesses. Everything on there to give me a reality check :f_thumbsup:
I will start today with the 2nd book.

Yes, I believe where you want to go with your remark is that poker is a long-term thing and shouldn't be concluded based on 1 decision made in the game, isn't it?

Thanks for the comment bro:f_thumbsup:

Spoiler

A few reasons why my winrate wasn't that high.

- I was trying to play on 4 tables for 30 minutes
- I played longer sessions than 45 minutes and increased to 1 hour though devastating by combining 4 tables at the same time
- My Internet at home sucked over the weekend :wtf: so lost quite some value there as well (that is why I am writing this blog today, have some time left)

Literature

Spoiler

Last week I finished the first book of The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler and Berry Carter :f_thumbsup:
This book has helped me so much to understand more of myself in a deeper way. I have always known that I had certain fears, confidence and time management problems. However, I never considered so many factors. I also must say that I shouldn't be bashing myself with this by saying to myself things like 'how come you have never seen this?! You are so reflective upon things, you should've known better and had to write reports before about these things'. During my journey it's what I thought sometimes. However, I can also say that during my studies we had to do a lot of reflections. The only difference here is that these reflections were mostly based on a 'business story' rather than really dig into yourself. I am thinking of buying a book of how to work on confidence problem and fear of failure, since these are my greatest weaknesses. I am OK to have these up to a certain extend but do not want these fear overrule my choices I want to make. I am now 27 years old and am glad that I have the opportunity to know at this age my real strengths and weaknesses. Of course, there most probably are way more. However, with regards to what I want, these are relevant to work on :)

I just started with MGoP 2 and do not instantly like it as such. Most probably this is because it is not anymore a so called 'hit in the face'. Rather, it is now really work on your game to get the best out of yourself. Therefore, on suggestion of the book, I will start writing my 'A-journal'. This is just a word file in which I write and describe my full thinking when I play my A-game. I believe when I do this for a while, I will get way more out of myself than I would have ever imagined :) I will keep you posted for more guys, I stay positive about my game!

Game Analysis

Spoiler

I am not sure if I will do this correctly and IF I even should pay attention to these things  However, I just want to do it and see whether it makes sense.

Graph

Spoiler

You know, I looked back to my messages and from the moment I was on around 4K hands, I decided to take coaching classes and after the first week I showed the graph for the week and stated the following:

As for my graph results, I am very pleased to see a sustainable upwards in it (could it be... )

To soon of course to jumping to conclusions, but anyway :f_biggrin:

Well, I can definitely say now that it is because of my coaching sessions with Vonki :f_thumbsup: Just look at the graph (without taking money into consideration). How in the world could I have ever thought I could do this?! :f_biggrin: In the end, of course, I did all the work but the initiative Vonki has made by helping others who struggle at the micros is a great gesture toward us in which many could take an example out of it :f_thumbsup: Cheers for that and look forward to much more to come in which I will be able to make right decisions because with every session and every discussion, that is what you display by yourself toward me :)

Position

Below is a table (in spoiler) that will show how much profit I have made this year on each position.

Spoiler

As you can see, the good news is that I make most money on BTN play. However, I lose quite a lot on the BB and also on SB. Without going into speculation outside the scope of this table, I have talked about this during my coaching and I should recap this. This will be on my to-do list below after my analysis. I also want to dig deeper into the MP position. My profit is very low here and it should have a reason. I am not sure though what exactly is this reason. I have a couple of ideas but I want to figure it out and come back on this at a later stage.

Variance

Spoiler

Even though, I have my own Excel file about variance, I just wanted to confirm my mental thoughts in which it becomes clear here that there always is variance, although in the longer term, profitable situations are indeed profitable and less profitable situations do indeed make losses.

Winnings/Losses vs Player

In order to protect the integrity of the players, I do not show the table nor has it any use since I can be very clear in my analysis here. I checked my opponents which I had the biggest loss and mostly they were aggressive fish. This was no big surprise. The only good thing about what I saw during my observation for my biggest losses is that I had no big loss in March yet against such an aggressive fish. I believe this is a good thing :) However, just that I gain more and more control over them, doesn't mean I am already there. It also might be that I lost opportunity somewhere, who knows?! There is still much more to come and even more to learn. Stay tight!

Multi Table Report

Spoiler

As this was also no surprise. I still make loss on 4 tables. However, I finally start making profit when I play 3 tables. Do you guys think it is a good idea to keep on doing this even though it looks now that the profit is low? I think it is low now because I started making losses on 3 tables..

To do List

Based on my Game Analysis I have a couple of things I would like to do.

Review the coaching session with Vonki about SB vs BB
Find out what exactly makes my profit minimal on MP - This may take a while :P

Alright guys, this is it for now. The first part of my journey was definitely something to remember and I learned a lot. I looked through all my messages again yesterday and I just see how much I have come to know. Most probably I will say the same thing in a couple of months again :f_biggrin:
Be sure to follow my Dropbox for really extensive analyses and assignments as well :f_thumbsup: I must say I did hold back in giving many theories about my game since I would be showing many hands in order to backup my arguments. Hope that is fine. However, when someone asks me questions of how I came to the thoughts, I am definitely willing to share my ideas :)

I do thank the readers who like this blog and my writing style. Not everyone has a 'click' with everyone's writing style and that's OK. The most important thing is that it may give you inspiration, new thoughts or ideas since this is why you do it. You shouldn't do it for me. Rather, do things to get the best out of yourself. That is my best advice that I can give you atm :)

Cheers,
Hesticus :f_drink:

to be honest, its probably just the small sample that has you not winning much in MP. But by all means, do go ahead and try to figure out if there's something you can improve further there, that's always good. :f_thumbsup:

Hi guys,

It took a few days but I get the hang of the A-game Journal I am doing. The more I read from The MGoP, the more I understand what they really want me to achieve with this. See below a snapshot I have now. Of course it will get improved along the way :f_biggrin:

A-game Journal

Spoiler

If you are interested in how I broke down my A-to-C game, be sure to follow my MGoP 2 Dropbox :f_biggrin::f_thumbsup:
The Excel and Word files are in there where I break down my mental game compared to my tactical game as well.
Getting more excited again for the journey! :)

One interesting note I made: It seems I do not totally get on my A-game by only reading my flaws and how to avoid these. I need more new exciting material to get my brain work. Am still figuring out exactly how because totally new material shouldn't do the trick. Rather, reading newer material plus something else I guess.. Have to find out more about my A-game what emotions come with it. Will keep you posted!

Cheers,

Almost back from where I started :f_biggrin:
Graph looks much better than last week :) I had 2 days of negative variance, which was fine by me. I didn't really question my game. I did make some calls I probably shouldn't have made (hands are provided below this paragraph in spoiler). However, it is also the learning process. I have put my mistakes in my A-C analysis and till now it works fine. The good thing about bad variance is that I can see my mistakes way faster. I also had some pretty good upswings and then it is very hard for me to see the mistakes. I cannot see then my C-game. It also could be that I am then really 'in the zone' and do not touch my C-game. You can check my Dropbox for my A-to-C-Game Analysis :f_thumbsup:

Literature

The Mental Game of Poker is going extremely well IMO. I have been busy updating the Master file from TMGP 1 and work on TMGP2. Here is a snapshot how my A-game Journal looks like now :f_biggrin:

Spoiler

Up till now I use the following Warm-up and Cooling down.

Spoiler

Warming up improvements
- Set goals in your A-journal
- Looking to my flaws
- Injecting logic (especially when entering ‘big pots’) (inject logic and I can stay calm)
- Review strengths and weaknesses
- Review long-term goals
- Review A-to-C-game analysis
- Breathing exercises
During the game
- A-game journal
- Take short notes on players on the table
- Mark ‘tank hands’
Cooling down improvements
- Review goals
- Goals met? What are my next goals?
- Update A-to-C A-journal analysis
- Review hands that forced me to ‘tank’ first – then biggest wins & losses; all for marking hands
- Evaluate how well opponents played against you (start with regs)
- Evaluate overall difficulty of session

Up till now it really works. At the beginning it takes quite some time to find the right method. However, once you have it, the warming-up only takes around 10 min and cooling down around 20 min since you are reviewing a lot.

Hey man,
Graph is looking fine, although, I believe you are loosing too much value on non-showdown pots.
Since I am not much of a cash game player dunno if that is fine, but I would look at this graph and see that maybe you're lacking some aggression post-flop for that.

Hand 1: I believe you have the best hand OTF most of the time, maybe a 3bet would close the pot right there. I wouldn't lead it though.

Hand 2: Seems fine to me.

Keep up the good work man.

Yo dude!

Non-showdown winnings are mostly like this, especially at the beginning. The biggest reason is inexperience but not only from yourself. People at NL2 suck at folding ;)

Thanks for your comments! :f_thumbsup:
