Open raise ranges, Day 1 – Task 20

This is how much we raise first-in from MP. What hands would you add (compare to the EP range) to gain these 20.3%?

Spoiler

I'd expand this range with suited hands only, e.g. by adding 65s, 86s, 97s, T8s, J9s, Q9s, and K9s. The reason is that blockers in MP aren't as important as playability:

(20.06%)
22+, A2s+, K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T8s+, 97s+, 86s+, 76s, 65s, ATo+, KJo+

Let's continue talking about MP.
Which filters (under More Filters) should we apply to get only the hands we raise first-in from MP?

How much (in %) should the stat Middle UO PFR be?

Spoiler

Of course, it's 100 again – what else could we expect? :f_ugly:
Any other number means we did something wrong with the previous filter.

This is too much, of course.
And when would you open-raise a hand like A4o?

Spoiler

To be honest, in most setups I wouldn't open this hand from MP because we block only Ax and its playability is very bad.
Looks like it makes sense to include this hand only when CO & BU are very tight and don't 3-bet much, plus SB & BB are very weak recreational players.

In what scenario we shouldn't open with 86s?

Spoiler

Every time BU or CO is a passive hobby player or a maniac with a high 3-bet frequency.
You don't want to play marginal hands in big pots out of position, so in spots like this it's recommended to tighten up your range.

Would you change our range from Task 20 if you'd seen this graph?

Spoiler

I think it's a good range and I would use it very often.

Spoiler

And why this range isn't optimal? It has also 20% for MP.

Spoiler

The problem is that here we open too few hands with good playability. In other words, it's hands distribution issue.
If we decide to open A8o from MP, we can definitely include suited aces, also a few suited connectors and gappers.
So, as also during play, always be on lookout for where you are with your range and consider if you should open this hand at all.

OK, let's assume we can open-raise with A8o since BB is a hobby player and we're surrounded by nits. How should our opening range look like for MP?

Spoiler

I think if we open with A8o, we can open-raise almost 30% from MP.
With that said, I'd always prefer suited hands. But for you, it was more important to get the exact percentage. It's unlikely you've got the same range as me.

(30.32%)
22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q5s+, J7s+, T7s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 65s, 54s, A8o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo

Spoiler

Here we see that even 82s are sometimes in our raising range. So when does it make sense to open with this hand?

Spoiler

I can't imagine any situation where it's profitable. This hand should always be in your folding range!

KJs are marked red on the graph.
Why do we lose money with it even in MP for which we have a better sample size?

Spoiler

Variance still plays a big role here, and not many hands get to showdown. When the sample size becomes big enough, this hand, almost certainly, will become 'green' as well.
