SB: $138.28 (138.3 bb)
BB: $44.85 (44.9 bb)
Hero (BTN): $123.11 (123.1 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with J♠: J♦: 4♦: A♠:
Hero raises to $3, SB raises to $10, BB folds, Hero calls $7

Flop: ($21) Q♥: 2♠: 3♦: (2 players)
SB bets $14, Hero raises to $29, SB calls $15

Turn: ($79) J♣: (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $25, SB calls $25

River: ($129) 2♦: (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $59.11 and is all-in, SB folds

Villain is a decent reg as far as I can tell. 28/26, 3b 7.1%, 180 hands
Otf I was thinking that a semibluff raise would be interesting. Had in mind following ideas:
1. Villain can fold his misses (rundowns etc) immediately and so we *can't* be blown off the best hand on the turn when villain chooses to barrel.
2. Villain can potentially fold AA/KK now (though he probably shouldn't). However, if he chooses to continue he probably has to just call and check to us ott.
3. We have a g/shot, two b/d flushdraws and two outs for a set. By raising we probably buy ourselves the rivercard for free, instead of turning one of our flushdraws and facing a $50~ bet on the turn which would suck.

On the -ve side, it's very hard to balance this raise. I'm not sure why we would ever want to raise QQ here and we'll almost never have 2p. So, itlr, do we need to worry about villain rebluffing?

Thoughts, thanks?

I have changed the topic title, because you don’t have AAxx, but JJxx. Otherwise I would defiantly 4bet :f_wink:

Anyway, pre-flop I would play the hand the same and on the flop, I don’t see a good reason to min raise and I would just call and play more aggressive on the turn when you hit a set. It’s good to know what good PLO players thinking about this hand.

Cheers,

I don't think we have enough equity vs his cbet range to call flop, unless I'm mistaken.

Thing is on the flop that he is not folding anything better and most likely he is not calling with anything worse. With raise you isolate yourself against a range that crushes you. Flop sizing is weird, that is a miniraise. Not sure what you are representing there on a rainbow board.

You got lucky and turned one of your 6 outs that you can barrel. That 1/3 sizing is once again a bit weird, although it looks like a bluff that leaves decent bet for the river. Problem is that you can't bet all rivers, any non-pairing A-8 completes a straight and you have to check back. I would bet bigger on the turn to get value, he never has a better hand here and I don't think that small bet is inducing any shoves.

That's clearly true - because we're bluffing. I expect to have pretty poor equity when called (i.e. just the g/shot, two b/d flushdraws and two outs for a set mentioned).

Is there a size that you think is more credible for a raise? Should we just never be raising this board? Do you agree that we can't call flop vs his 3b and cb range?

If you are bluffing, what better hands would opponent fold to a miniraise?

if villain folds AKT2/AKT5/AKJT/AKTT etc, he folds ~30% equity, which is actually good for us given the raise size. In my experience, PLO isn't so much "what better folds" when it's not on the river as it is in NL. Folding out 30% equity with a minraise is actually a good result.

That's true.

I am not sure if hero should raise here with minraise at all as a standard, being in position.

Thanks, Shev for putting my point into better language! That's what I was trying to say :)

But I agree, Kyyberi, that this seems like a weird board to raise on for value. This is what I'm struggling with. Can you confirm then, whether you think we can call on this flop, with plan to semibluff the turns that are good for us if villain checks?

We can call. Against AA we have slightly over 30% and against 8% 3bet we have 55%. I think he is checking a ton of turns and we can then decide what to do.
