PokerStars - 80/160 Ante 20 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 3 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: 6.29 BB (VPIP: 19.57, PFR: 8.89, 3Bet Preflop: 11.76, Hands: 48)
Hero (SB): 18.81 BB
BB: 31.15 BB (VPIP: 53.85, PFR: 19.61, 3Bet Preflop: 10.00, Hands: 56)

3 players post ante of 0.13 BB, Hero posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.88 BB) Hero has A♣ J♣

fold, Hero raises to 2 BB, BB calls 1 BB

Flop: (4.38 BB, 2 players) 9♥ 7♦ J♦
Hero bets 2.19 BB, BB calls 2.19 BB

Turn: (8.75 BB, 2 players) K♦
Hero checks, BB checks

River: (8.75 BB, 2 players) 7♣
Hero checks, BB bets 7 BB, fold,

He is an aggro loose player and on this situation i have to be careful on pots against him. I could probably raise a bit more preflop and flop but i don't think it could increse his folds, because he doesn't want to know about icm. Shoving pre could be a choice but it seems an overplay. On turn i have to check to go to the showdown without investing more chips, beacuse there a lot of hands that villain calls flop and that now beats me. On the river against this bet i think i have to fold, but being an agressive player could i consider that he could be bluffing sometimes and what hands could i call here?

Cumps ;)

Would prefer shove pre over small raise as you have to fold to shove because of ICM. Shove is going to be profitable always. Alternative line versus this sort of player would be limp-shove. So by limping you either keep pot small if he checks or if he raises e.g. 3-4bb you get better risk:reward for shove compared to open shove.

As played flop is actually pretty nasty and with this stack setup I would tend to check-call. Thing is if you bet and villain raises what then?

Turn and river are good. I doubt you are quite often enough good versus his bet size.

ok I think you can play the hand differently. He is most likes a fish due to his stats. I raise pre 2,25 x and if he shoves I stack of. On this flop you have to protect your hand. I bet 2/3ps and stack of most turns. You can charge facecards, draws and worse J. Yes sometimes he got the nuts or a nice draw but most of the time he call to wide with draws and worse jack. You want to stack off for max value. As played I probably stack of turn. Dont get me wrong I think ghaleon way is nice but imo we are to shallow in chips to let go. Just because its easy possible for you to set flop to shove turn.

Problem with a raise/call approach pre-flop is that you get that you most likely make a -ev call against a loose passive player on the bubble and if he's just calling you get in akward post-flop ICM spots and that's tough without position.

i would just shove preflop. 18bb and AJ is good to go.

Maybe my opinion is far away from ICM or Optimal play but i would avoid a direct confrontation with the BB and more likely attack the shortest stack.
Alternatively Let the Big Stack and the Short Stack get in war , even if the shortstack double up it's still in your profit and if he bust same as well.
That's just my way of thinking about SNGs, in a MTT i would think much more differently i guess.

Best of Skills and Luck @ Tables,
J-C.

Dont do this ICM suicide...

Its not just most likely -ev but guaranteed -ev. There is literally no sensible range for villain that makes it good. Here is graph for this situation where Y-axis has EV in percent of pricepool and X-axis BB shoving range versus AJs:

So hand is just not strong enough to induce but it can be shoved profitably. Well assuming BB wont call over 26%:

Here is also HRC advanced hand calculation for sort of sensible raise-call inducing hands: http://hands.holdemresources.net/?id=191kbjtsi6flw

Though even TT is marginal versus 50% range. So yeah JJ+ or QQ+ would make most sense. Now of course when we raise small its not going to end up as villain folding or shoving. So EV of raise line is not as simple as this. Sometimes villain just call and we will go to postflop which can be good outcome in long run for hands with good postflop playability. Also possible edge on postflop helps obviously. Also villain might 3bet small and we might be able to 4bet shove with fold equity on ous side.

But my default line in spots like these is to avoid creating situations where I would be forced to raise-fold preflop with hand that has clearly +EV open shove possibility.

Versus more reggy or aggro opponent we also have that range balance side to deal with in these spots especially. If we can only induce raise-call with TT+ sensibly there is not huge amount of hands we can include in raise-fold range before we can be exploited by wide shoves. Though this might not be issue in micro or small stake games as general population is likely to make way too wide raise-calls.

ty ghaleon nice analysis. You got the proof that taking a plus ev play is the intuitive easier one to make. Especially in high icm spots. gj
What if it were a fullring hand? Imo it gets even closer.

On a FR table the would be burst and that changed the ICM a little bit, because the paid-out for 3th and 2nd isn't to much in a 9 player SNG.

Yeah in 9man 3handed it would 75/25 for remaining price pool so ICM effect is smaller. There inducing would probably be fine.
