Is this refering to the special rule that if someone has raised and there is at least one cold caller that we can also call any pocket pair? Does this rule also apply for unraised pots or why could we continue the hand with another player in the pot? Also would the same apply for suited connectors 54s+?
Special rule for Pocket Pairs:
We can only enter the pot with pocket pairs like 2♥: 2♠: if the charts indicate we should, otherwise we fold them. The only exception is this special rule - if there has been a raise and at least one call to the raise before us we can call all pocket pairs.
Special rule for Suited Connectors: If we have at least 4♥: 5♥: or a better Suited Connector (SCs), in the Cut Off or on the Button, and there has been a raise AND a call to this raise before us, then we are allowed to call these SCs.
Right, when we look at the rules, it's only when someone raised and there was a call i.e. we don't want 22 and suited connectors in a limped pot really. It seems tight and counter-intuitive to call a raise + a call with them, but not even complete in the small blind vs a limp right?
Well, the reason is our post flop strategy - we only check and fold with anything less than a top pair made hand when there is 3+ players, AND we always raise and stack off with monsters, which in case of these small pockets and suited connectors run the risk of being dominated, and we'd often overplay our hand with e.g. bottom 2 pair in a 5 way limped pot. Whereas in a raised 3way pot their ranges will contain more high cards so our low sets and 2 pairs won't be dominated as often.
This is one of the first spots where if you get more advanced you can start completing preflop - but you will need to be able to let go even e.g. of a set when it's multiway and limped and a flush hits - something following the post-flop guide doesn't account for
