We had a good start today. I finally got the cable for my laptop and managed to pull off a rather long session. It started rough, but in the end, I was on the right side of a lot of juicers. I felt totally in control of my game during the session, didn't try any fancy moves, and didn't lose my temper for a second.

Since NL10 was excluded from the challenge, I focused on nine tables of NL25. I plan to have a one-hour study session and then stream in the evening. Please join to see some hands and the progress!

Session 3: The session went really well on stream. You can rewatch it Here. Sorry if I'm singing with no music, but it's cut from the VOD. I made some mistakes, of course, as I was getting tired. However, it was nice to stream and peak at 10 viewers today. Thanks a lot! Affiliate is really close. Let's go, go, go!

I got up to 4th place on the leaderboard. I might grind a bit more offline, but I might just leave it here. I need to grind in the morning as well!

Session 4: It was a very good session to secure my place on the leaderboard. I was rather lucky to run over EV in the end, which made it easier to complete the happy hour. Altogether, I had a super grinding day, playing around 13 hours through Day 2 and making a good profit. I have to expect a downswing, however, since I was running over EV. The initial prop bet costed me $230 (23 people x $10)

I was only unhappy with a few river decisions, but overall, it was awesome. GGCare (223 BB) gave me another $17, and I accumulated $44 in the Fish Buffet, so I ended up a bit over $440+ for the day. Great swing! I might do a session during the day, but I will be streaming only on Thursday evening.

I did forget to update here on the forum, but I will do this now. I had a very bad run, but taken action.
Poker Challenge: Sessions 5-17 Overview

Sessions 5-7:
Not much to report initially. I played for an hour before taking the rest of the day off, keeping control despite having some beers. However, things took a downturn as I streamed for 4 hours, almost exclusively running bad and facing top ranges. I nearly ground back to break-even but hit another downswing while trying to maintain my leaderboard spot. This led to an unnecessary and frustrating chase for 1st place. My mental game was off; I was distracted, playing my C game, and the lack of focus was evident. A few beers earlier in the week disrupted my sleep, leaving me frustrated, tired, and only at 50% energy for the grind.

Despite earning $44 from GGCare and $70 from the leaderboard, it felt like I was back at square one.

Session 8:
After a 2-day family vacation, I tried a short session in the evening but felt tired and unsatisfied with my play. Realizing I needed to focus more on mental strength, I committed to two key changes: prioritizing rest and setting up a mental fitness routine before each session. This routine involves playing short chess matches and solving puzzles to assess my decision-making and focus, assigning myself a performance category (D, C, B, A, S) based on this. This system is aimed at ensuring I only play when I’m at my best, avoiding the pitfalls of playing while fatigued or distracted.

Sessions 9-14:
The downswing continued, and it was mentally exhausting. After feeling a deep sense of frustration, I realized I needed to stop playing temporarily. Despite the ongoing losses, I remained determined to grind through and not give up on the challenge, even though NL25 was proving to be a tough barrier.

Session 15:
This session was a breakthrough in terms of handling adversity. I remained unfazed by coolers and difficult runouts, saving numerous hands to review later. Despite these challenges, I managed to book only a small loss. The swing was tough, with a drop of around 55 buy-ins including rake, but I refused to let it break my spirit. I couldn’t play more that day but was proud of my resilience.

Session 16:
I played again but lost another 4 buy-ins. Losing $100 might not seem like much, but it marked the first time I felt physical pain from the grind, realizing how much I had lost on NL25—around $1,300. This was a blow, especially knowing how much I’ve improved over the last 3 years. While variance plays a role, it's tough to keep blaming it. I decided to minimize my playtime for the week and focus on rebuilding my health and well-being. This involves reintroducing daily workouts, meditation, hydration, studying, and healthy eating. These are desperate measures but necessary to regain focus and energy.

Session 17:
The last 3 days have been fully dedicated to my health, and I’ve been super consistent with my new routine. I’ve stuck to a 6-hour intermittent fasting window, drank 4 liters of water daily, hit the heavy bag for 45 minutes, and stayed active with my son. Removing social media apps has been a game-changer, allowing me more quality time with family and friends and helping me clear long-pending tasks.

This session was incredibly focused—I wasn’t distracted, caught a lot of spots, and my intuition was sharp. While I’m happy with the session, I wouldn’t rate it higher than an "A" due to a couple of decisions that could have turned a +$60 net into +$140. Nonetheless, I barely made any mistakes and followed every rule I set for myself. Consistency is key, and I’m determined to keep this momentum going both on and off the felt.

Sessions 18-20 Recap:

Session 18 was pretty uneventful—no big spots or exciting moments, but I stayed focused on gathering information from my opponents and making the best decisions in every situation. It was a close-to-break-even session in terms of EV, but it felt solid overall.

Session 19 was all about concentration. I did everything right and focused intensely, but the luck factor was nowhere to be found. Still, I’m happy with the session. I’ve realized that focusing on EV is what really matters, and eventually, it will pay off. After the session, I took a break to teach my 3-year-old son how to swim. Seeing him laugh and enjoy himself is a great reminder that there’s more to life than poker, and it helps me keep things in perspective.

Session 20 brought a big turnaround. After a long stretch of running bad, I finally hit a jackpot on GGPoker. I put in more volume, and while my EV is still just steady, the challenge has flipped—we’re now up +$1,000 instead of down -$500. My session was super focused, and I hit every spot I should have. There were moments of boredom and distraction, so it wasn’t an S game, but definitely a strong A game. I’m regaining my confidence, and it’s clear that taking control of my life is starting to pay off. Looking forward to putting in more volume tomorrow!

Hi. Your history of playing at 9-max ante tables is very interesting. Could you share some tips on building a winning strategy for playing at these tables?

Hi, reading your posts, especially your introduction, I quickly feel connected because I totally agree and also have similar thought.

And since you're living in Germany, I would like to ask questions since I'm also currently living in Germany. I played like 15 yrs ago, but then stopped, and only recently started to play again while discovering that so many things have changed: the poker theory itself (with GTO etc.) and the environment, especially in Germany with all the laws etc.

At the moment, I'm still playing at the lowest level $0.01/$0.02, where even if I win, it's just cents, so I don't need to think too much about other stuffs (like taxes, sites to play, etc.). However, I'm not planning to stay at this level, and hopefully one day I can reach a level where my winnings are big enough. But at that time, I need to think about those other stuffs. Can you give me advises regarding those things (the taxes, which payment processor is the best, where is best to play as a German, and any other things that might be relevant as a poker player living in Germany).

Thanks in advance!!
