*HAND ENDS*

At the time i thought he just had a weak ace and would be missing value if i checked behind on the river (I have jsut moved form FL to NL). I didn't think the board was particuarly dangerous. Or is this just a classic case of me overplaying TPTK?

Standard line for situations like this is to play a check behind on the turn and then call a riverbet.
The board is very dry and I don't see many worse hands there who are capable of calling all the way.
By checking you show weakness and very often you will collect some bluffmoney from your opponents.
The 9 is a little scarecard, because in some cases he has it and then again, the check-behind saves a little money for you as you get to the showdown cheap.

So as you said, it was a bit overplayed for TPTK, but I think betting or checking behind also depends on the quality of your opponents, but as you didn't play on Partypoker I don't know the quality of the opponents at this level there.
(Against bad players(Calling Stations) a Turnbet seems reasonable.)
