That's horrible advice, thought I'm sure most of us did this when we started. It's tempting to play every hand, when you see all these people doubling up with shit hands hitting anything on the flop. But the in long term you will surely not profit with this strategy. You'll tend to waste many or all of your chips without catching anything, and then have nothing when the good hands come.

In a sense it is not so bad - but you only want to do it in late position with speculative hands and there are already many limpers to the pot.

At the end of the day, there are many styles to play early MTT stages - with not one being more correct than the other tbh - its best to look at table conditions before deciding upon one.

However, I think just playing conservative in freerolls is the best cos of the sheer amount of maniacs.

I play quite a lot of freerolls, too and normally I almost completely rely on the Article given. Just one exeption: In the first 2 or 3 rounds many players go all-in with almost any hand (perhaps already bored by playing poker?) If I happen to catch something better than 99 I just call them, if in rather late position. It's normally at least a coinflip-situation or better, and if you lose at least you did not lose a lot of your time...
Otherwise, it's really just a question of variance^^ if you have an edge of 50% against these players and play in a 2000-player -freeroll you would need to play about 1000 games before being first:) if my mathematics are correct:D
