Before anything, I just want to say that you guys are awesome!! I've missed this forum terribly, but I really had a hard time getting my ass down to write new posts. There was so much going on here that I didn't even know what to talk about.
Now, I gotta admit something. I haven't played any poker for about an entire month. WTF! It'll all be explained further down.
How have you all been over here? I trust you guys are still rocking and rolling and fishing like pros, yeah!
Anyway, it's been an awful long time since my brother and I last posted here. There was no earthquake, civil war or anything of the kind here. There were elections for president though, but no fuss regarding that =D.
First bit of news is that my brother became a bearded maniac:
Second bit of news is we're working on a new project called H.S.I. or holistic-self-improvement.com (I'm not posting an actual link cause I'm not sure i's allowed).
Third bit of news is that we had some deep insights about life, yeah. And we've got some powerful ideas for the future. I'm gonna talk a little bit more about this.
To start with: the awesomeness of poker.
I've been making a living with poker for nearly a year and a half now and it's been quite challenging in many ways. First of all, it demands a whole lot of discipline and personal organization. You have to be your boss, I mean, there's no one checking on you whether you're putting in enough hours of work/study or not. It's completely up to you. You do the planning, you gotta guarantee your own balls by studying like a pro, put in lots of hours (unless you play NL1000K) and crazy lockdowns, make silly propbets with Gerv trusting your country will win a football match etc etc etc.
Poker also demands some serious psychological balance and control of emotions. I still remember the first time I lost a whole month of rent in less than an hour. Back then I was playing SSS NL200, pretty sick swings, yeah. And this psychological balance is not only necessary when losing, but when winning as well. A sick winning session can easily knock you off your A-game if you become careless or if you get the superhero syndrome. Poker is also challenging socially. It's a very solitary work and if you don't watch it, you might soon find yourself cut off from social circles and friendships. Besides, it can really be an interesting experience getting people to understand that your “job” is playing poker.
- “So, what do you work with?”
- “I'm a PRO. A Poker PRO.”
Truth is that poker changed my life by being so challenging. And yet another major thing is that it gave me financial independence and this alone made a huge difference in my life. So why the heck haven't I played any poker for an entire month?
One fine day I just shut Ladbrokes down (during work time =D) and sat beside my brother. Very honestly I said: “I'm tired of this shit. I just haven't felt like playing poker for quite a while now, something is wrong here”. And surprisingly my brother replied: “I know! Me too!”. Some sort of crisis was going on. So we stopped everything and decided to investigate what was going on. We even consulted mystical oracles and the I-ching (it's true and we had some surprising revelations).We then identified and admitted the following problems:
1 – Working for money alone is not quite fulfilling
I used to think I should make a lot of money first, and then get busy with other stuff. After all, with a huge BR I could finance studies, projects, trips, whatever I wanted. But the problem is that I was postponing toomany projecs and ideas. I was just waiting till I moved up enough limits or someting. But truth is there is no reason to postpone anything. So now I'm first going to get busy with what is awesome and fulfilling, then I'll worry about making money. Besides, money just comes your way if you're cool enough =DD
2 – Neglecting skills and providing 0 social service
I've been neglecting some things here. I mean, I'm into a lot of other stuff like medicine, philosophy , writing, and something deep inside me was demanding some action about that. Taking up the course of Traditional Chinese Medicine was a step in that direction. (I'm really digging it and keeping it up as top student \o/)
3 – I want to get paid while I sleep and after I'm dead
I just figured it's best to get paid even while I sleep instead of just getting $/hr. Buahaha. Passive Income and related businesses! There are many ways of doing that and my brother and I are studying them and cooking up some plans for that to happen. The holistic-self-improvement.com project is a step towards that direction btw.
4 – Providing value, a sh**load of value.
Instead of producing a sh** load of cash, my horizons changes to producing a sh** load of value. I mean offering something valuable to people, to society, to the world. I mean going to Iraq and putting myself on fire as a protest against the war. Ok, that'd be just stupid but I think you get my meaning. My brother and I had some cool ideas for business projects and social projects which have been on a stand-by for quite some time now. We just feel it's really time to put them on the move. There is no reason to wait: “Just do it!”.
Does that mean dandycal has to quit poker?
No, no, no. There is no need for quitting anything. I'm just talking about a new level of freedom. I'm talking about waking up every morning to do awesome stuff and nothing else. Perhaps that will be playing poker 10hrs/day for some people, perhaps it'll be something else. Right now, I absolutely feel I need to work on some other things.
Financially this change of plans is even a little risky since poker was my only source of income. But you see, that's one of the things I'll be changing. I'm going for multiple sources FTW.
So at the moment I'm mainly busy developing the h-s-i website, studying and working on a couple of other projects. But I recently found out that there are some new legal cash games and tourneys happening over here and that sure sounds interesting (read “fishy”).
Wow, that was the longest post ever. I leave more news for later. My brother should soon post also. I'm just sorry I don't have a lot of poker action to talk about atm.
