He DID take a wicket, that the umpire refused to give it is a different matter.

I reckon we'd have skittled 'em at that point, Jimmy was right on form. IMO we're 161 below EV.

Couldn't decide whether to watch the X factor or play poker last night, but I was chatting with goldchess and he persuaded me that the X factor is for saddos and poker isn't. Since I am naturally contrary, I decided the best plan was to choose a loose table, and play a bit tighter than usual so that I could play poker and watch the X factor. I suspect that this is not the pro attitude (sorry TT), but it worked out OK this time. Instead of playing my usual 40/40 I played about 30/25 and ended about 4BI up. These are my results since I started on NL10. Still just one-tabling, so no real volume. I may try two tables next time. Also, I decided that I wanted at least some stats, so I do have a HUD with Vpip/PFR/3bet/AF/WTSD on it. This is very helpful.

I am continually amazed by how often most people fold at this limit. Aggression really does seem to work. I like my red line.

Here's my last winning hand of the night. I think he really should be 4betting my squeeze, as he doesn't want to be playing AA in a three way pot. On this lovely flop, I am a slight favourite.

Just read http://www.pokerstrategy.com/strategy/others/1811/2/ and I couldn't help but be struck by more chess analogies. In a slow game of chess, you can easily sit there for 10 minutes or more coming up with a plan and analysing the position. When you play blitz chess, you're drawing on the experience that you gained from analysing similar situations to crack off a plausible move with little or no analysis. In poker (at least online), you're really only ever playing at blitz speeds. You might have up to a minute to think if you're really stuck, but basically you're making very quick decisions. There's no real poker equivalent of standard slow chess. Therefore, the experience you draw on has to be experience that you get from reviewing hands and sessions.

The flip side of this is that, in chess, there are lots of example of child prodigies (Carlsen and Kasparov for example). Some people's brains are just wired for chess. They look at the board and immediately see the right patterns and ideas. Of course, success is 1% talent and 99% hard work, but some people just have a huge natural head start. Some things that are very hard for the average hacker to learn just seem obvious to them. I think there must be a similar phenomenon in poker. Some people just naturally see the patterns. When I look at the article I linked to above, I think that all of that analysis is great, and that you can train yourself to have a feel for it by doing hand reviews, but those few naturally talented people just 'feel' when they have enough equity to continue. Add to that a lot of hard work and you have the recipe for top players like TT and the other coaches on this site.

Enough chess analogies!

There's no such thing. Read "Talent is overated"

You start seeing patterns with practice. The prodigies are prodigies because they started young and had a father figure (instructor/coach) to teach them how to do it at a young age. Because they started young, they had a lot more practice [ ex, kid starts playing and learning chess at age 4 - with intensive training at age 21 he's a champion/expert vs kid who starts playing at age 16; both are at age 21, the difference is that one had 17 years of training, the other just 5. Three times more!

That doesn't mean in poker that if you start late you can't win. Better late than never :P
You just have to remember that you only have to be better than 5 people that are at your table. And for that you have table selection.

+ Now you can improve quicker because you can play way faster (get more data) and have a lot more learning material at your disposal.

Good luck with the project with TT!

Maybe, but, and this is going to sound like bragging, but I'm just trying to use an example that I know about, I was a bit of a maths prodigy when I was very young, and my ability just seems to come out of nowhere. I had no mentor, my parents are hopeless at maths, I was just able to understand mathematical stuff instantly (wish I still could!). So, although my 1% talent, 99% hard work comment should indicate that I basically agree with you, I do think a more accurate description would be that most people have 0% poker talent, most people on this site have 1% poker talent, and some have 2% talent, but it's the almost 100% left of hard work that matters.

Congrats on the deal with TT, very interesting project, look forward to seeing how it develops.

I'm sure you will crush the cash games, especially with TTs coaching!

When you planning to start multi-tabling and putting in some volume?

Well, I doubled my number of tables from one to two tonight! Seemed to go OK. I think I can manage four, but my laptop screen is pathetically small, and I don't really want to play stacked any more. I even went to get my eyes tested last week, as I thought I was getting a bit long sighted, and indeed I was. Just need to get some new glasses now. I think that being able to see the cards will probably have a positive impact on my game. TT reckons I should get a 2nd monitor, and he's probably right, but it would probably get broken by one of the kids, or one of them would take it away and try to watch TV on it.

First 1K hands of SH NL10 now completed. Boris, my volume guru, will be thrilled for me. Onwards and upwards!

I've now got to part 6 of the 'Crushing NL50' videos. Later ones definitely very interesting. Here's a question from it. 'How would a thinking player exploit you?' In other words, if you have unbalanced ranges in some situations, how could you be exploited? He wasn't suggesting that anyone at NL10 is likely to be able to do this, but that thinking about the question might help you to spot how to exploit people playing in a similar style to you. Maybe that's a step beyond 'Value, value, value and don't pay off'.

Speaking of which.....value, value, value and..... bollocks!

Full Tilt - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players

But I can squeeze to make up for it. :f_biggrin:

Weather currently dreadful. The trusty Nissan Micra is proving a bit frisky on the icy roads. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Posting this song for number one son, as he's having a few problems at the moment (so now I'm being a DJ too?). It's one of his favourites, and I was listening to it in the car during my interminable journey across the icy wastelands of England to work, and I got quite upset. Quite hard being a stepdad, but I love him really, even though he's a total fuck up.

On a happier note, had a brief impromptu sweat with Asmir last night, which was fun. However, I really do need to work out how to deal with those pesky setminers. I'm inclined to think that for every time I stack off with two pair/TPTK against a set, someone else will do the same against me, so that things will even out. But if I could work out how to get away from them, it would be super (I know I should write 'awesome', not 'super', but bollocks, I am an adult after all).

Played for a couple of hours tonight. I seem to have taken 'value, value, value and don't pay off', and changed it into 'mindless aggression, mindless aggression, mindless aggression, and pay off just often enough to break even'. Look at my red line! If I could just get to the showdown with the best hand....

For example.

MP is a huge fish, who just plays fit or fold every time, so I decide to isolate him. SB seems quite competent, and has seen me do this before, so I reckon his range is very wide too, so....... _biggrin:

Full Tilt - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

MP: $5.22
CO: $11.04
Hero (BTN): $15.26
SB: $22.97
BB: $9.32
UTG: $17.92

SB posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero has 9♠ T♥

fold, MP calls $0.10, fold, Hero raises to $0.50, SB raises to $1.70, fold, fold, Hero raises to $5.00, fold

Hero wins $3.60

That flush card is much more likely to come if you don't have any of that suit in your hand! :f_biggrin:
Full Tilt - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

UTG: $13.65
CO: $17.92

SB: $10.75
BB: $32.95

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero has T♣ K♣

UTG raises to $0.35, fold, Hero calls $0.35, fold, fold

Flop: ($0.85, 2 players) 6♦ 9♠ 4♠
UTG bets $0.40, Hero raises to $1.35, UTG calls $0.95

Turn: ($3.55, 2 players) A♠
UTG bets $1.55, Hero raises to $4.50, fold

Hero wins $6.21
