Fold preflop.
Unless you have a special read, calling this OOP is very -EV as you'll get valuebet thinly by all better Ax and cannot extract much value against worse hands once you hit an A high board.

On the river it's close because we split with A4-A9, I'd c/c.

He needs to have A4-A9 58% of the time for us to make a breakeven-call (we need to call 26 for a total pot of 26 + 37.5/2 = 44.75, 26/44.75=0.58) and we didn't even include an occasional 3barrelbluff (of course there are also other valuehands like QQ/TT but they don't make up for many combinations).

So as played it should be ok.

But I guess you see the problem - you hit one of the very best hands you can expect to ever hit and you're still bluffcatching and want to even c/f after playing a passive line that induces stuff.

post flop, I agree -- there is no other way to play this but I'm not expecting to be good very often.

Preflop I think you can even consider 5bet jamming this hand. If you think he is likely to choose this moment to play back at you then the 5b jam should have a heap of feQ since, in this instance, his 4b range will be weaker.

I agree, but there's one problem: how do we know he will play back by 4betting and not by calling?
If we knew he was only 4betting and his range was wide then yes, 3betting with the intention of shoving would be +EV.
But he will call a lot of hands IP and perhaps not even 4betbluff too much.

Don't. When he folds to 3bets several times in a row it is muuuch more likely he was just waiting for a hand.
