Hello!

I think I played this hand pretty terribly overall(c-bet too big, prob should never just call his raise OOP), but what I want to know is do you think he is weak when he checks back the turn or just trying to get another bet out of me? His line confused me because unless he is trying to induce a spew I don't think he would be raising this flop for value, so I thought maybe he had a middle pair type hand and wanted to protect or was just trying to take the pot down with air, and wouldn't want call my river shove. Any opinions would be welcome.

Thanks.

While he can be tricky here on turn I feel that he is mostly weak. Given he folds that much to 3-bets he doesn't have that many Qx hands besides some AQ and QQ.

The only hand I can see him checking back there to trap is QQ (unless he timed out).

Now if we look at our line we actually have something from a Q (and there are many) to KK-AA.

So the way you played your hand, on the river, you are mostly repping a Q and nothing else. But again, because we are the ones 3-betting we can have a few so villain should be able to fold his better 1p type hands. Then again we also might get him to just fold AK here.

It would be interesting to know if you have any other reads on the villain and how he plays postflop. Did you see him being tricky, straight forward, weak/tight, etc.?

Hello Bogdan, thanks for the reply. :f_biggrin:

I have never really clashed with this villain before so we don't have much history, and I don't have any notes on his postflop play. My general impression was that he was playing pretty straightforward.

Recently I have been trying to make some more aggressive plays when I think villain is weak, but I always seem to get snap shoved on/called so I am not feeling very confident about my hand reading abilities.

Preflop I usually make it a bit bigger OOP, my standard size is $11.

As played you can justify bet/calling because he's very unlikely to raise either a PP or Qx - most people would just call to trap.
But then the plan is to check it down afterwards.
Generally I'd bet/fold vs a tight player like him because I'm not too sure how much he can actually bluff here.
But as I said bet/call can definitely be fine depending on the dynamics of the game.

However, the riverbet doesn't make sense because the range we gave him doesn't include any worse hands he could call and any better ones he could fold.

So we can either c/f the river, or c/c if we think he's bluffing often enough. I'd c/f as played.

Hi again!

So do you think it's unlikely he would be raising to say protect a smaller PP like 99 or something similar? If he is going to trap with a Q/call with PPs what is he raising? What I was thinking was that with 44 I can't really C/C the river because there's not much I beat except Ax, where when I shove he will hopefully fold most middle PPs.

Thanks again!

another thing noone has said is y 3bet preflop? I don't mind 3beting small PP if there is a super sick dynamic and i can just 3b/get it in. I usally prefer flatting (i am not set mining and plan to continue on many boards where i dont hit a set). i really hate 3b/folding a small PP (with its gr8 equity) and sometimes i cant really 3b/jam (given villian) which is y i ike the flat.
I will comment on the postflop play later.

He's unlikely to bet pp for value on river as his betting range will be more polarised. C/c could be in order if you think he's bluffing. Anyway we risk the same amt if we shove n he calls or u shove n he folds or calls so u r losing value vs bluffs n value betting against little

Raising the flop with 99 for protection doesn't make much sense as we have a maximum of 6 outs. He is much better off just calling for his SD-value (unless we have a dynamic that makes him think we're going nuts with overcards of course).

I don't like to call those PPs OOP. They're very hard to play as you never flop equity so you can hardly bluff postflop.
It's a nice way to balance your 3bettingrange against opponents who don't play back too much though.
