From my experience of taking shots, apart from waking up in a gutter somewhere, is it would have been just as quick if I up'd the volume of the current stake, or was just more patient and carried on at current stake. I've never actually won when taking a shot, hitting the variance train everytime, standard is usually the same. By all means take shots, just be prepared to move down 2 stakes rather than 1 if it doesn't go well. But most the time it's better to stick it out at your current stake.
Your roll is working capital, so just like a portfolio you have risk assessment, if you have excess funds and can afford to take a shot, go for it, but don't risk going bust doing so.
