Well this is not the first person I notice who is overjoyed of the fact that he is up 3BI or so in such a short period of time.

Things change when you lose 3BI or so in 50 hands spread over a few tables... then you come to know what this game is all about.

Just want to keep it real.

+1 to the keep it real call. My first proper month of PLO was my biggest losing month ever. :f_p:

BTW re the rundowns + dangler type hands... the opening hands suffering wall'o'text treatment above are for UTG ranges. As you get more in position you can open up your range for two reasons:

1. You have position more often.
2. You have position more often.

Technically, I realise this is the same reason, but it is so important I thought it worth mentioning it twice.

Value hands can be raised from any position, but for weaker hands we are raising because we have more steal equity pre flop, and on the flop and don't require our hand to hit as often. We also want to be able to control the pot as much as possible when we make a marginal hand to make the most from our weaker holdings.

Always, always, always be aware of the tendencies of players yet to act who may have position on you when raising the more marginal parts of your range and make sure you have a plan for your hand if they call or raise, or you end up in multiway pots with non-nutty hands.

Just found out this blog, will add it to my bookmarks :)

I am small stakes PLO coach in Finnish community, and it's always nice to see some PLO discussion.

Welcome to the dark side! Your loyalty to the dark forces will be tested when you have you first "running 15 buy-in's under EV in an hour"-session. :)

Holdem players are used to opening hand charts, but you can't make on for PLO.

Here is my rough guideline for young padawans:

- Read Jeff Hwang's books. At least Big Play Strategy (gives VERY good explanation on starting hands) and shorthanded thing. As no one plays full ring, except Ribbo.

- Watch all the PLO smallstakes videos you can.

- Get Omaha Manager. But don't use HUD.

- Play. A lot. And everytime you get a spot where you are not sure what to do, mark the hand. You will find that same spots come over, so post one of those to the forum.

- When ever you read hand analyzis from the forum, don't look at the replies. Think it yourself first. What would you do, and why?

- And last thing: Do not 3bet anything except aces, when you get at least 1/3 of your stack in preflop. And when you do, shove the rest 100% of flops. In micros the biggest single leak is to 3bet just aces, and then overplay them postflop. Either shove them (1/3 or more preflop and rest on flop) or 3bet with wider range. And to 3bet with wider range requires PLO skills, so forget that now.

If you 3bet just aces, and you will have 1,5 times the pot or more left in flop, you will lose money to good opponents.

Well guys here is a little gift for you:

Read this book. I think he gives a lot of information on starting hands, probabilities and some post-flop considerations. I bought this one and did not regret... now I have the shorthanded one on the way from Amazon already. It must arrive within some 2 weeks. _cool:

There is something extremely important we did not cover here yet, which is table and seat selection. It becomes much more critical in PLO than it is in NLHE. Having a calling station to our left can be a pain in the ass, having a LAG to our left can mean death and having a 300BB stack to our left when we also have 300BB or so can also be nasty.

I actually stand up if the conditions at the table reach a point like this, or just sit out hoping that the guy might stand up himself. I never sit on a table in which I cannot justify why I'm there. It means I need to have some known fish to my right, as well as some position at the regulars. The greatest mistake one can make in regards to table selection is loosing his selection criteria just because he wants to play and X amount of tables, no matter what. He intends to play 6 tables 100% of the time, he manages to pick 4 great tables and then, all of a sudden, decides to sit down on 2 evidently tough tables... because for some reason he NEEDS those 6 tables running. This is bad.

It is a habit I made... it comes automatically right now. Every time something weird attracts my attention at the table (like a maniac sits down, a 600BB pot is won by someone, I lose a big pot, I win a big pot, etc), I ask myself "Why am I here?". If I cannot find a decent reason, like "because there are those 2 guys to my left who are just donating money all the time" or something similar, I stand up and go for another table.

I like to play 6 tables, but I actually had some occasions in which there were 10+ tables available in the lobby but I kept playing on just 2 of them until the situation got better. I don't have the talent to waste money, you know.

Be tough. Don't let anyone ever discourage you if you think you can reach some objective.

lol man, it was a joke
just thought it was funny that you thought I am "overjoyed of the fact that he is up 3BI or so in such a short period of time"

anyway, I really appreciate your contribution to this blog. I'm thinking about taking the time to learn some basic PLO - been putting it off for almost 2 years because of "huge swings in PLO" I keep hearing about.

Silver videos are good all the way up to PLO200, if you plan playing TAG.

Why is it bad to have a calling station to our left? Of course it would be nice to have him on our right, but with calling stations I don't think position matters a lot. Of course if the pot is heads up with him. But if he is on our left, then usually 3way pots mean that we have position to that 3rd player.

Against calling stations you valuebet the max s**t out of your strong hands, and forget about bluffing or fancy playing. If the opponent is classical calling station who doesn't bet or raise anything but the nuts (and usually not even those) you don't need position.

But table selection is important. And in micros there are usually lots of available tables. If you have a LAG player in your table and you are not comfortable playing against him, then leave. And as blackops said, if you are deep staked with opponent and in oop, leave. This is something that I have said numerous times in my coachings, you have to know where your money comes from in the table. If you don't know, then leave. There are do "honour" or "pride" in tables. If LAG hammers the table and you don't want to flip with him, then don't. You don't HAVE to stay in the table. :)
