Its pretty likely that you've heard of John Nash by now in one way or another. He introduced the world to non-cooperative (better known as "Nash") equilibria, won the noble prize in economics for his work in game theory, and inspired the 2001 movie A Beautiful Mind. This is his Biography.

August Goals

Poker
[ ] Hands: 30K+
[ ] HU SNGs: 5+
[ ] Articles: 2+
[ ] Coachings: 1-3 (includes PS weekly coachings)
[ ] Session Reviews: 3-4
[ ] PokerStrategy Points: 500+ (maintain Gold Status)

My coach has been kicking my ass for a long time to start playing more hands. Unproductivity may be the single biggest problem with my game at the moment. It may also be the largest obstruction to my ability to move up in stakes.

I'll be posting my July results at the end of today.. but It looks like i'm coming in right around 10k hands which is the 6th most hands logged in a single month for me, 18k being the most.

With this in mind, 30k hands is a big jump, and its plain to me that this goal isn't exactly realistic. So, I'm operating on the assumption that my overly "realistic" goal setting in the past may be contributing to my low productivity. Now all I have to do is convince myself that i can do it...

I guess what i really need is an incentive. Maybe a prop bet is in order. I'll have to think about that.

Terms:

1. The bet will consist of 30,000 hands played by me in the month of August 2011 according to Eastern Standard Time (local).

2. Odds are 1:1

3. Only Fixed Limit hands played at my current stakes or above will count. (.5/1 and some .25/.5).

4. The bet will be void in the unlikely event that:
- Canada bans online poker
- PokerStars games are unavailable (server death, removal of games @ stakes)
- There's a death in the family, an earthquake destroys my house, etc.
- My internet goes down for more than 15 days during the month of august.
- My Power goes out for more than 10 days during the month of august.

5. Minimum bet is $10 to win $10. I'm willing to take up to $50 in action (mostly b/c i'm a prop bet newb).

6. Outgoing payments will be Via PokerStars transfer. If I cannot transfer by these means for any reason I will make a strong effort to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

7. Incoming payments will be accepted via PokerStars transfer or MoneyBookers transfer.

8. I will continue to accept action at 1:1 odds until 3 full days into the month of August.

9. To confirm the number of hands played, I will post here at the end of the month. I'll include a screen shot of my HEM database clearly showing the month and year along with the stakes played.

10. To place a bet, post here along with the requested amount. By placing a bet you agree to the terms as stated. Once I have quoted your post "booked" and we have exchanged contact information (Stars alias, name, skype) then the agreement is binding.

11. Since Its a small bet and notice is relatively short there is no escrow to hold funds or judge to decide whether the bet is void. We'll just resolve any problems in the most reasonable way we can.

ps. Skype is datsmahname

July Results

July Goals
[x] 10k hands
[2?] 4 articles
[x] 5 or more HU SNGS
[x] 2 or more coaching sessions
[x] some other stuff that doesn't come to mind now

LHE cash

LHE HU SNGs

Despite a solid 250BB downswing I'm pretty OK with this month. In terms of earnings it was one of my best months. The only problem as I've pointed out already is that I'm probably not playing enough hands each month. I've only played about 60K hands this entire year.

Hmm... I think i decided on the wrong odds for my prop bet. First, Its something i want to do anways & so giving myself slightly the worst of it may still be in my best interest if it encourages me to play more.

Anyways, i was a bit slow to learn that stars has cut their VPP requirements for this month so I'm considering going for the 50K FPP platinum bonus. I think that i'd have to play 72k hands from now till the end of next month... and i think this would produce about 700 in bonuses for me.

Villain is relatively unknown but my first impression is that he's a fairly standard TAG.

I'm most interested in the turn and river. On the river i was torn between just calling and raise/call. At the time i did not consider raise/fold... and I think we can rule that one out given my weak read.

Against tight ranges I think its almost a fold on the turn... but KQ/KJs can definitely be in villains range here, i cant rule out a very agro line with 88-TT and I have chop outs against AT as well. I think if we throw these in I have a profitable call down pending a K river.

Poker Stars, $0.50/$1 Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

Preflop: Hero is CO with A♦ 4♠
2 folds, Hero raises, BTN calls, SB folds, BB 3-bets, Hero calls, BTN calls

Flop: (9.5 SB) A♠ 3♦ J♥ (3 players)
BB bets, Hero calls, BTN folds

Turn: (5.8 BB) Q♦ (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls

River: (7.8 BB) 4♣ (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises...

I think i need to much equity, perhaps 63% to raise here since he'll 3-bet nearly all better hands. I did raise in this hand though.

Some Theoretical Foundations for Meta-Game Adjustments: (part 1 of n)

In Human Factors Engineering (HFE), one of the main goals is to understand and enhance human performance on complex tasks. In its broad strokes, HFE can apply to virtually any human process which interacts with an environment.

Heuristics and biases in HFE represent powerful, highly efficient "rule-of-thumb" processes. They characteristically apply in a variety of situations and simplify information. The consequence of this high speed processing algorithm is that the output (or behavior) will show a larger tendency to deviate from optimal behavior. Stated another way, the rule-of-thumb heuristic is our powerful, albeit quick and dirty solution system.

Perception and Integration: Heuristics and Biases in Receiving and Using Cues

  • Attention to a limited number of cues: our brain is generally limited in the number of factors that it will consider when making a decision. There are a large number of studies on cognitive processing and working memory limits. More than a limitation, the ability to identify and manage salient information represents a strength. Without it we would be overwhelmed by our environments. Nevertheless, Complex problems can computationally max out our processing ability which implies that there is a hard upper limit, and according to Stephan Wolfram this is actually reached most of the time.
  • Cue primacy and anchoring: Where information is gathered over time, earlier cues tend to receive greater than average importance. An early couple bluffs may get you additional action for a significant amount of time against new opponents.

Moreover, these early experiences serve to anchor the range of hypotheses an individual considers. For example, I'm selling some art. If I list my price at $155, consecutive bids will huddle more closely to this value than if i listed at $150. This is because the increase in price specificity has created an anchor. Keep this in mind next time you're heckling at the market.

  • Inattention to later cues: Over time its important to constantly challenge our assumptions. Ignoring new information, or failing to attend to later cues means our working assumptions become less accurate as time passes. Essentially, our data has become out-dated.

Recalling cue primacy, inattention to later cues falls along a similar vein. However, I believe its a mistake to think of these as simply exiting along a continuum. Without reviewing my notes a lot, I think theres something fundamentally more complex about this relationship and the tendency to ignore cues which conflicts with earlier information.

  • Cue salience: Some cues are given more weight than others, particularly those that capture our attention. Until we train ourselves to discriminate more carefully, these salient cues are the loudest, largest, and most persistent cues... but none of these features validate the information they present. Rather, an untrained mind can be bullied into accepting various premises that will constrain future behavior.
  • Overweighting of unreliable cues: Some cues are more reliable than others, even among those which we may consider to be important. However, when integrating cues, people often oversimplify the process by treating all cues as if they are all equally valid and reliable. This leads to undue emphasis on unreliable cues.

When I was young we lived in the countryside. There were other places, but this is the one I remember. A few narrow roads with modest homes ten minutes from the nearest stop light, and you'd drive a half hour to find four lanes of traffic. In a way my entire universe was within grasp.

Most everyone knew one another. As local kids, we would play around in all the yards. No one seemed to mind. I remember my mom scolding me for cutting through neighbours yard from school, but they didn't mind either.

Coming home their dog was tied in the back of the truck. It had just enough rope to slip off the side but not enough to reach the ground. He was a heavy set golden lab, and I was probably just 10 years old. I wrapped a hold of him and yelled for help.

His owner came outside pretty fast, but a minute takes a lot longer when your young. I remember thinking his reaction was... strange, like everything was alright. It's true, everything was alright... but his reaction struck me as odd nevertheless.
